I imagine all the other evil bands gathered around in awe. "How did you beat the protagonists in the climactic talent show??"
And the wolf shrugs and is like "Uh, we were just much better than they were in all ways."

Yeah that totally blew my mind the first time I saw the special, not only the bad guys won but they also did so fair and square (I'll bet they even got clearance from the Hendrix estate to sample the riff from Foxy Lady for their song.)
And it's a good lesson for the kiddies because sometimes things don't work out exactly the way you want it, but as long you got your family and friends by your side everything will be all right. And it's true as Emmet and his Ma did eventually get their happy ending in the form of a good paying regular gig.

The movie Planes sucks for many reasons, but one of the things that annoyed me most was that they missed out big on the opportunity to get that lesson out to kids. Sometimes even if you try your hardest, you still don't win, but that's okay because you should be proud of what you achieved anyway. Instead they went for the standard underdog overcomes odds to win contest they never should have won.

I fear that if Disney remakes this, they'll jettison this for a totally happy ending.
EDIT: Wait a minute, this is a LONGER version? I don't remember some of this, not even in the HBO airings.
EDIT x 2: Always loved how the leader is essentially an evil Cookie Monster.

The whole thing was "you should take risks..." but unlike anything else I can think of, that moral doesn't finish with "...because that's how you get what you want," but rather "...but make sure you're a good loser, because the whole thing about risks is that they fail a lot." Emmet and his mom were bound to succeed eventually; they're too talented and too well-liked not to. But in order to get there, there was gonna be a lot of failure.
