So, a lot of moves tend to pick up new names or change their standard names over time. The biggest example I can think of is that the lungblower became the backstabber thanks to Carlito in WWE, and just about everyone has agreed that "backstabber" is a much better name for the move given how brutal it looks (not that "lungblower" and "back cracker" have ever completely disappeared from commentary lexicons).
Are there any moves that you feel particularly strongly about the name of? Perhaps especially if it goes against the accepted standard.
This is inspired by seeing Matt Sydal doing the swinging Angle Slam tonight. Excalibur didn't call it by any name, which is weird for him, but to me, this move will always be the Lightning Spiral (Masato Yoshino's name for it), just because that name is metal as hell and because Yoshino is such a strikingly memorable wrestler for whom it was the perfect signature move. ...but probably any name it gets is going to be better than "Ghana-rhea" from ROH...

I was talking about this with my roommate while we were watching an old NXT episode tonight- I love how Balor's double foot stomp is called the "Coup de Grace."
It's cool sounding and has a cool meaning. It's very creative for a move name, especially considering how many finishers in WWE tend to be puns and whatnot.

The Prophecy ... sadly it only stayed that way for a few weeks before turning to the inferior “Widowmaker.”

Personally I prefer the IndyTaker to the Meltzer Driver, though I get why they might choose the latter.

Personally I prefer the IndyTaker to the Meltzer Driver, though I get why they might choose the latter. They're actually separate (...if barely distinct) moves. IndyTaker is the one on the floor, and IIRC Nick doesn't flip for it.

There is no such move as a roaring elbow.

There is no such move as a roaring elbow. Then there's no such move as the northern lights suplex. I understand the translation issue but it's pedantic to point that out.

What's the mistranslation on Northern Lights suplex? Edit: "Northern Right Suplex" is the actual mistranslation. Hiroshi Hase came up with the move while he was in Stampede, hence the name.

That said, please be nicer to people for posting something as innocuous as a wrestling move name. Roaring Elbow was originally an ECW translation mistake for rolling elbow and that's where a lot of people first saw it and commentators and wrestlers still refer to it as the roaring elbow.

I was thinking the other day about how Damien cross calls it the Razor’s edge and how cool it was that that move is forever associated with Razor Ramon. It’s like no over name stuck, and nobody did it as memorable as Scott hall.

I still call it a roaring elbow, even though I know it should be rolling. Roaring sounds so much cooler.

It’s like no over name stuck, and nobody did it as memorable as Scott hall. That's a really good example. "Celtic Cross" and "Splash Mountain" are both significantly less cool, and the technical-ish name "crucifix powerbomb" is entirely too similar to "crucifix bomb."

If you and your finisher are iconic enough, you just sort of end up owning the name of the move by default, it seems.
