Royal Rumble Records:
1988: Only one of the Big 4 to debut in Canada: Royal Rumble 1988 debuted in Hamilton, ON. The others all debuted in the United States: WrestleMania and SummerSlam debuted at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY, while the Survivor Series debuted at the Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio
Only Big 4 PPV to debut with the WWE Champion not wrestling at the event: WWE Champion Hulk Hogan was at the event for the contract signing for his match with Andre The Giant at The Main Event.
Only Royal Rumble event to not air on PPV: the event debuted on USA to compete with the NWA’s Bunkhouse Stampede, which did air on PPV.
Only Rumble match for “The Natural” Butch Reed, Harley Race, “Jumpin’” Jim Brunzell, B. Brian Blair, Sam Houston, “Dangerous” Danny Davis, Boris Zhukov, Don Muraco, Hillbilly Jim, and The Junkyard Dog.
Only match at a Rumble PPV for Ricky Steamboat, The Jumping Bomb Angels (Noriyo Tateno & Itsuki Yamazaki), The Glamour Girls (Judy Martin & Leilani Kai), Tama, and Jim Powers (though, he would compete at other Rumble events in dark matches).
Only WWE Women's Tag Team Title Match to take place at the Royal Rumble: A 2-Out-Of-3 Falls Match between the Jumping Bomb Angels and the Glamour Girls (C). Also, was the longest women's match, at 15:21, until 2018.
Only 20-Man Royal Rumble in the event’s history.
Shortest Rumble Match, at 33 minutes.
1st Iron Man: Bret “The Hitman” Hart, 25:42. Also, the shortest Iron Man time in Rumble history.
1st Elimination by more than 1 person: The Hart Foundation eliminating Tito Santana.
1st Rumble Winner to win on 1st attempt: “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan. Also, the 1st of 2 Rumble Winners to never win a World Title.
Only Rumble Final Four with no World Champions. “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, Don Muraco, Dino Bravo, and the One Man Gang were the last 4 men in the 1st Rumble match; and none of them has been World Champ (unless you count Muraco’s ECW Title wins, since it would become a World Title after he held them).
1st Royal Rumble to not end with the Royal Rumble match: A 2-Out-Of-3 Falls Tag Team Match between The Islanders and The Young Stallions went on last. This was also the only Rumble to not end with a Rumble match or a World Title match.
Most Watched Cable Wrestling Show: the first Royal Rumble drew an 8.2 rating on USA.

In comparison to the next 4 Rumbles, it is the only one not properly timed for entrances.

1989: 1st Royal Rumble PPV: the 1st Rumble “PPV” in 1988 was actually a cable special on USA. So, while the Rumble was the 3rd of the Big 4 to debut, it was the last to reach PPV.
Only Royal Rumble to be called by Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura. Ventura called the 1st one with Vince McMahon and would call the 3rd one with Tony Schiavone. Monsoon would call the 1991-1993 Rumbles with “Rowdy” Roddy Piper (1991) and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan (the other 2). This was the only one that the famous WWE commentary duo called together.
Only Rumble match for Ronnie Garvin, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake, and Big John Studd.
Only match at a Rumble PPV for Rockin’ Robin and Judy Martin.
1st Women’s Title Match: Rockin’ Robin (C) VS Judy Martin. Also the last women’s match at the Rumble until 1999.
Harley Race’s last WWE match: He took on Haku for the King Of The Ring Crown and Cape.
1st Rumble match with 30 wrestlers. Besides 1988, 2011, and the Greatest Royal Rumble, every Rumble match would have 30 competitors.
1st of 4 consecutive Rumbles to see Number 2 eliminated first: 1989, Smash; 1990, Koko B. Ware; 1991, Dino Bravo; 1992, “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase.
1st hour-long Rumble match: The 1989 Rumble match lasted 1:04:53. The other Rumble matches to go an hour long were 1991, 1992, 1993, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2011, 2016, 2017, 2018 (Men’s Rumble), the Greatest Royal Rumble, 2019 (Women’s Rumble), 2020 (Men’s), and 2021 (Men’s).
New Iron Man record: Mr. Perfect, 27:58.
1st Man to eliminate himself: Andre The Giant.
1st Man to get 10 eliminations: Hulk Hogan.
New record for Most consecutive eliminations: 8, Hulk Hogan. Yes, Hogan took out 8 of his 10 eliminations in a row. In fact, from the 11th man eliminated to the 22nd, only 2 weren’t eliminated by Hogan: the 12th man, Tito Santana, who was thrown out by Arn Anderson and Randy Savage; and the 21st man, who was Hogan. Hogan’s record would stand until 2020 when Brock Lesnar shattered it with 13 straight eliminations.
1st Man to be eliminated by someone who was already eliminated: The Big Boss Man. He was eliminated by Hulk Hogan after Hogan had been eliminated by Boss Man and Akeem.
1st of 3 Rumbles where the WWE Champion was a participant, with then champ “Macho Man” Randy Savage competing in the match. The other 2 were 1990 (Hulk Hogan, who won) and 2016 (Roman Reigns, whose WWE Title was on the line).
1st Man to compete in the Rumble match under at least 2 different names: George Gray. In 1988, Gray competed in the match as the One Man Gang. The next year, he competed as Akeem.
1st of 2 men to compete in only 1 Rumble match and win it: Big John Studd. Also, the 2nd Rumble Winner to win on his 1st attempt. And, the 2nd Rumble Winner to never win a World Title. The other One And Done winner was Vince McMahon in 1999.
1st of 2 Rumble winners to leave WWE within the same year they won the Rumble match: Big John Studd. Studd would quit by July 1989. The next time we’d see a Rumble winner leaving WWE within a year of winning the match was in 2014 when Batista left in June of that year.
Least bought Royal Rumble PPV (pre-Network): 165,000 buys.

1990: Only Royal Rumble PPV with no title matches. All the male champions at the time (Tag Team Champions Andre The Giant & Haku, Intercontinental Champion The Ultimate Warrior, and WWE Champion Hulk Hogan) competed in the Rumble matches, the only time this has happened.
Tony Schiavone’s last WWE PPV.
Last match for the Fabulous Rougeaus: VS The Bushwhackers. Though, Jacques Rougeau would resurface as The Mountie sometime after the event. As for Raymond, this would be his last match.
Only PPV match for “The Genius” Lanny Poffo: VS Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake.
Only Submission Match to take place at a Royal Rumble, between Ronnie Garvin and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine.
Only Rumble match for Dusty Rhodes and “Ravishing” Rick Rude.
1st Man to last over 30 minutes: “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase. In fact, he lasted 44:47, becoming the first man to last over 40 minutes as well.
1st Man to draw Number 1 after drawing Number 30 the previous year: “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase.
Only WWE Champion to win the Royal Rumble match: Hulk Hogan. Also, 1st Rumble Winner to have lost in a previous Rumble.
1st Rumble Winner to have the Most Eliminations in the match: Hulk Hogan. Hogan had 6 eliminations, tied with The Ultimate Warrior. Also, the 1st man to have the Most Eliminations 2 years in a row.

1991: 1st WWE PPV to take place on a Saturday. Only 2 Rumble PPVs took place on a Saturday; the other was the 1994 Rumble.
1st WWE Title Match at a Royal Rumble: The Ultimate Warrior (c) VS Sgt. Slaughter. Also, 1st WWE Title exchange (Slaughter won the title off of Warrior) and 1st title match of any kind at a Rumble PPV.
Koko B. Ware’s last PPV match (VS The Mountie) until Survivor Series 1992.
Dustin Rhodes’s last WWE match (with Dusty VS “The Million Dollar Man'' Ted DiBiase & Virgil) until In Your House: Great White North (October 1995). Also, Dusty Rhodes’s last WWE match until Survivor Series 2006.
Only Rumble match for Paul Roma, Saba Simba, Shane Douglas, and Road Warrior Hawk.
1st No Show: “Macho Man” Randy Savage.
1st Man to last over 50 minutes in a Rumble: “The Model” Rick Martel, 52:17.
1st 2-time Rumble winner: Hulk Hogan. Also, 1st Back-To-Back Winner. And, 1st Rumble Winner to go onto to challenge the WWE Champion at WrestleMania (even though the 1993 Rumble Match would begin the stipulation of having the Rumble Winner challenge for a World Title at WrestleMania, Hogan ended up challenging for the WWE Title at WrestleMania VII after winning the Rumble Match even though that stipulation hadn’t been put into place). And, finally, the 1st man to have the Most Eliminations 3 years in a row, getting 7 this year.
1st of 3 Royal Rumbles to have more buys than the WrestleMania from the same year: Royal Rumble 1991 did 440,000 buys, while WrestleMania VII did only 400,000.

1992: 1st Rumble PPV to have all 3 Triple Crown Titles (WWE, Intercontinental, and Tag Team Titles) defended at the event. The 1992 Rumble PPV would see the Intercontinental and World Tag Team Titles first defended at a Rumble PPV: The Mountie defended his Intercontinental Title against “Rowdy” Roddy Piper; and The Legion Of Doom defended their Tag Team Titles against The Natural Disasters. Meanwhile, the 1992 Rumble match would be fought for the vacant WWE Title.
1st Intercontinental Title change at a Royal Rumble PPV : “Rowdy” Roddy Piper won the title off of The Mountie.
Only Rumble Match for Col. Mustafa, Sgt. Slaughter, and Sid Justice.
1st Rumble Match with a prize for the winner, and the 1st of 2 Rumble Matches with the WWE Title on the line in the match. The other was in 2016.
1st Man to pull Double Duty (wrestle on the undercard and then compete in the Rumble Match): “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. Piper was also the 1st Man to compete for the WWE and Intercontinental Title in the same night since Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior fought each other for both titles at WrestleMania VI. And, this was the 1st time Piper had ever held a WWE title. After losing the Intercontinental Title to Bret “The Hitman” Hart at WrestleMania VII, he wouldn’t hold another title in WWE until 2006, when he and Ric Flair won the WWE World Tag Team Titles.
1st Self-Elimination that wasn’t recognized: “Macho Man” Randy Savage threw himself over the top rope after eliminating Jake “The Snake” Roberts. However, Savage was allowed to re-enter the ring and continue wrestling. The announcers covered for him, saying that he had to be thrown over the ropes by another wrestler, even though there had been another self-elimination 3 years earlier. Since then, every other self-elimination in a Rumble has counted as an actual elimination.
1st of 2 men to win the WWE Title in the Rumble Match: Ric Flair. Also, 1st Man to go over an hour in the Rumble (Flair lasted 1 hour and 2 seconds), 1st Iron Man to win the Rumble, and 1st Man to win from a single digit number (Flair came in at 3).
2nd Man to win the NWA and WWE World Titles: Ric Flair. The original Nature Boy, Buddy Rogers, had been the only man to have held both titles until Flair’s win at the 1992 Rumble. Though, technically Flair is actually the 1st man to win both titles since Rogers’s WWE Title “win” didn’t actually happen; WWE claimed that Rogers won the title in a tournament in South America, but in reality, they just gave him the title and made up the tournament. Rogers and Flair would later be joined by AJ Styles in having won the NWA and WWE World Titles.

1993: Last PPV to feature Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan on commentary together.
2nd of just 3 times Bret “The Hitman” Hart won a WWE Title match on PPV with the Sharpshooter; he defeated Razor Ramon with the move in their WWE Title match. The 1st was over Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 1992, and the 3rd wasn't until September 1997, when Hart made The Patriot submit to the hold at the In Your House: Ground Zero.
Only Rumble match for Max Moon, Damien Demento, and Carlos Colón.
1st Rumble to feature non-WWE wrestlers. Carlos Colón and Genichiro Tenryu weren’t under WWE contract and just brought in to compete in the match. In fact, the Rumble matches from 1993 to 1997 would feature outside wrestlers who would make their only WWE appearances as one-time Rumble competitors.
6th straight Royal Rumble where the Iron Man record was broken: Bob Backlund set a new Iron Man record at 1:01:10. So, the 1st 6 Rumble matches saw the record broken. Also, Backlund is the 1st Man to last over an hour in a Rumble match and not win. Backlund made it to the Final Four but was the next to last man eliminated.
Only man to compete in the 1st 6 Rumble matches: Tito Santana. Also, since Santana had only competed in the Rumble match at the 1st 6 Rumble PPVs, he was the 1st man to have appeared in 5 or more Rumble matches without competing in any non-Rumble matches. Funny enough, in that same Rumble match, he would be joined by Barry Darsow, who had competed in the Rumble match from 1989-1993 (as Smash from 1989 to 1991 and as the Repo Man in 1992 and 1993) without appearing on the undercard.
1st Man to be eliminated by a wrestler who wasn’t a competitor in the Rumble match: The Undertaker, who was eliminated by Giant Gonzalez. Gonzalez wasn’t officially in the match. In fact, he was making his WWE debut running in to beat up The Undertaker and throw him out.
1st Rumble Match where the winner won a World Title match at WrestleMania. Also, said winner, Yokozuna, would go on to win the WWE Title at WrestleMania IX, making him the 1st Rumble winner to do so.
1st Rumble Winner to have the most eliminations in the match, no ties: Yokozuna. Yoko had 7 eliminations in the match and, unlike Hogan in 1990, wasn’t tied with anyone else in the match.
Only heel to win the Rumble match and his WrestleMania World Title match: Yokozuna.

Rogers and Flair would later be joined by AJ Styles in having won the NWA and WWE World Titles. That's a really weird/neat bit of trivia considering how TNA at one point tried to literally make Styles into the re-incarnation of Flair.

1994: Ted DiBiase’s 1st PPV since leaving after SummerSlam 1993. Though, he returned as a commentator, as he had retired from in-ring work just days before the PPV.
1st Man to compete at 5 Royal Rumble PPVs without competing in the Rumble match: Jacques Rougeau. In 1989 and 1990, he competed in tag matches with his brother Raymond as the Fabulous Rougeaus, a 2-Out-Of-3 Falls 6-Man Tag with Dino Bravo against "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan and The Hart Foundation in '89 and against the Bushwhackers in '90. In 1991 and 1992, he fought against Koko B. Ware and "Rowdy" Roddy Piper respectively. In 1994, he teamed with Pierre Ouellet as The Quebecers in a Tag Team Title match against Bret & Owen Hart.
1st Casket Match at a Royal Rumble PPV: The Undertaker VS Yokozuna for the WWE Title. There have been 3 Casket Matches at the Royal Rumble (the others were in 1998 and 2005), and all 3 involved The Undertaker.
Only Rumble match for Rick Steiner, Bam Bam Bigelow, and The Great Kabuki.
Only match at a Rumble PPV for Pierre Ouellet.
1st Rumble match with 90 second intervals.
1st Rumble match where the Iron Man record wasn’t broken. After the 1st 6 Rumble matches saw the record broken, the 1994 Rumble’s Iron Man, Bam Bam Bigelow, would last 30:12, about half the time that Bob Backlund had lasted the previous year. Also, Bigelow was the 1st 30-minute Iron Man. Despite the record being broken in the 1st 6 Rumble matches, none of those 6 Iron Men set a time within the 30-40 minute mark. The 1st 2 (Bret Hart and Mr. Perfect) lasted under 30 minutes. And, the other 4 (Ted DiBiase, Rick Martel, Ric Flair, and Bob Backlund) lasted over 40 minutes. Bigelow was the 1st to stay in the 30 minute range.
3rd Man to compete in 5 Rumble matches without competing in any non-Rumble matches: “Macho Man” Randy Savage. He was in the Rumble match for 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993, and 1994; and never once wrestled on the undercard at those PPVs.
Only No-Show to miss his only Rumble shot: Bastion Booger. The 1994 Rumble match was the only Rumble match Booger was booked for, and he didn’t even show up for it. The kayfabe reason for Booger’s absence was a stomach ache, but most likely, he was left out to build up some drama as to whether or not Bret Hart would compete in the match after injuring his knee earlier in the night.
Only Rumble match with 2 winners: Bret “The Hitman” Hart and Lex Luger fell over the ropes and hit the floor at the same time. They were declared co-winners, the only time this has happened.
1st Rumble winner to pull double duty: Bret “The Hitman” Hart. Bret teamed up with his brother Owen to take on The Quebecers for their World Tag Team Titles at the 1994 Rumble PPV before going on to co-win the Rumble match with Lex Luger.
1st Rumble winner to lose his World Title match at WrestleMania: Lex Luger. Also, the 1st Rumble winner whose World Title match did not main event WrestleMania. Since there were 2 winners and 2 WWE Title matches, a coin toss was held to see whose match would go 1st, which Luger won. Also, Luger is the 1st of 2 Rumble winners who have not won a World Title in WWE. Even though not every Rumble winner has won their World Title match at WrestleMania, they have all held a World Title in WWE except for Luger and Shinsuke Nakamura. Though, Luger is a former WCW Champion, and Nakamura has held the IWGP World Heavyweight Title. So, every Rumble winner since 1990 has been a World Champion at some point in their career.
1st Double Royal (King Of The Ring and Royal Rumble winner): Bret “The Hitman” Hart. Hart is the first man to have won the King Of The Ring tournament and the Royal Rumble. In fact, he’s one of 3 men to have done it 6 months apart; he had won the first King Of The Ring PPV tournament on June 13, 1993 and then the Rumble match on January 22, 1994. He’s also the only Double Royal to win 2 King Of The Ring tournaments; Hart had won one of the pre-PPV tournaments in 1991.

1995: 1st Celebrity appearances at Rumble PPV: Pamela Anderson and Lawrence Taylor were the 1st celebrities to be involved in a Rumble PPV, mainly to set up their involvement in WrestleMania XI.
Last WWE PPV where the referees wore blue shirts and black bow ties. They had been the standard referee uniform for years, and all the WWE PPVs up to that point had the referees in them. On March 13, 1995, on RAW, the referees started wearing the black-and-white striped shirts, which has been the standard referee uniform ever since. WrestleMania XI was the 1st WWE PPV with the referees in stripes.
1st Rumble PPV where new Tag Team Champions were crowned: Bob Holly & The 1-2-3 Kid became the 1st team to win the Tag Team Titles at a Royal Rumble, beating Bam Bam Bigelow & Tatanka in the finals of a tournament to crown new champs. Also, the 1st Tag Team Title match at a Rumble PPV to end in a pinfall. This was only the 3rd Tag Team Title match at the Royal Rumble. The 1st in 1992 between LOD and The Natural Disasters ended in a count-out victory for the Disasters. The 2nd in 1994 between The Quebecers and Bret & Owen Hart ended in a referee stoppage because of Bret’s knee injury.
Only Rumble match for Jimmy Del Ray, Tom Prichard, Timothy Well, Steven Dunn, King Kong Bundy, Mantaur, Dick Murdoch, and Don Harris, who portrayed one of the Blu Brothers at the time. Harris would be booked for the 1998 Rumble as Skull but was taken out before the match
Only Rumble match with 1 minute intervals.
Shortest 30-Man Rumble match: 38:41. Also, the 2nd Shortest Rumble.
1st man to compete in 7 Rumble matches without competing in any other match at a Rumble PPV: Rick Martel. Yes, The Model has been in 7 Rumbles and never wrestled in any other kind of match at a Rumble PPV. Also, Martel became the 1st Man to compete in 7 consecutive Rumble matches (1989-1995).
1st Rumble match where the 1st 2 men in the match were the last 2: Shawn Michaels and The British Bulldog drew Numbers 1 & 2 respectively. Yet, they ended up being the last men in the match. Also, the 1st time Numbers 1 & 2 lasted past Number 30. And, the 1st Rumble with 2 Iron Men. Since Michaels and Bulldog entered at the same time and lasted until the end, they were tied for the longest time at 38:41.
1st of just 2 times someone has been prematurely declared as a Rumble winner; the British Bulldog threw Shawn Michaels over the ropes, and then his music played as if he had just won. However, Michaels held onto the ropes, came back in, and dumped Bulldog out as he was celebrating. The refs corrected the ring announcer, and Michaels was officially declared the winner.
1st Rumble winner from Number 1: Shawn Michaels.
1st Rumble Triple Crown (Rumble Winner who was also the Iron Man and had the Most Eliminations): Shawn Michaels. Not only did he win and last throughout the whole match at 38:41, Michaels had 8 eliminations in the match, making him the 1st man to pull off this hat trick.

1996: 1st WWE PPV with a live pre show. The 1996 Rumble began with a Free For All show, which included a match, Hunter Hearst Helmsley VS Duke “The Dumpster” Droese for the 30th position in the Rumble.
4th straight title match for Razor Ramon. Even though he never competed in the Rumble match, Razor Ramon (the real Razor, Scott Hall) competed in title matches for 4 straight Rumble PPVs: WWE Title against Bret “The Hitman” Hart in 1993 and Intercontinental Title matches for 1994, 1995, and 1996. Also, for all 3 of those Intercontinental Title matches, someone interfered in the match. In 1994, Ramon took on IRS for the title, with Shawn Michaels attacking Ramon during a ref bump. However, Ramon persevered and retained the title. In 1995, Ramon took on Jeff Jarrett, and Jarrett's manager, The Roadie, clipped Ramon's knee, causing him to lose the match twice: first by count-out and later after the match was restarted (Jarrett coaxed Ramon into continuing the match) when Ramon's knee gave way as he was about to hit Jarrett with the Razor's Edge. And, finally in 1996, the 1-2-3 Kid cost Ramon his Intercontinental Title to Goldust when he interfered in the match.
Only Rumble match for Dory Funk, Jr., Takao Omori, Doug Gilbert, Squat Teamer #1, Squat Teamer #2, Hakushi, and Barry Horowitz.
Only match at a Rumble PPV for Skip (Chris Candido).
1st Rumble match where all the competitors had their entrance music played. Prior to 1996, only the 1st 2 guys got their music played.
Longest before the 1st elimination: 14 minutes. That’s how long the 1996 Rumble went before Bob Backlund was thrown out by Yokozuna to give the match its 1st elimination.
1st Rumble competitor to spend most of his time not in the ring: Jerry “The King” Lawler. The King lasted 36:02, most of it hiding under the ring after Jake “The Snake” Roberts threw a snake in the ring, scaring Lawler under the ring. He stayed hidden until Shawn Michaels came out and threw him back into the ring before officially eliminating him.
Only time eliminations made by an already-eliminated competitor that didn’t count. After Vader had been eliminated, he went apeshit and attacked the other men in the match at the time, throwing them all over the top rope. However, then WWE President, Gorilla Monsoon, declared that those eliminations didn’t count since Vader had already been eliminated, even though 2 other Rumbles had featured eliminations by already-eliminated competitors. This is the only time this type of elimination didn’t count as there have been a few Rumbles with this type of elimination.
1st of just 2 Rumble competitors to be eliminated before they were supposed to: Steve Austin. Wrestling as The Ringmaster, Austin accidentally fell out before he was supposed to be eliminated when he was knocked over the ropes by Fatu; he slipped from the ropes due to them being slippery from all the competitors sweating on them throughout the match. He was supposed to be in the Final Four, and you can see him yelling at Shawn Michaels about changing a spot, most likely the elimination spot Michaels later had with The British Bulldog, as he walked to the back.
1st of 19 Rumble matches for Glen Jacobs. Jacobs made his Rumble debut at Isaac Yankem, D.D.S. The next year, he’d compete in the match at the Fake Diesel. All of his other Rumble matches have been as he most successful gimmick, Kane.
2nd back-to-back Rumble winner: Shawn Michaels. Also, 1st Rumble winner to lose his WrestleMania World Title match and then win another. And, the 2nd man to have the Most Eliminations for 2nd year in a row. Michaels had 8 eliminations in this Rumble, same number as in 1995.
Longest campaign as a Royal Rumble winner (the time to win the Rumble added to the time of his title match at WrestleMania): Shawn Michaels, 1:28:01. While Michaels only lasted 26:09 in the 1996 Rumble match, his WrestleMania XII WWE Title match was a 60-minute Iron Man Match, lasting 1:01:52, which put him over the top. 5 other Rumble winners had campaigns that lasted over an hour: Stone Cold Steve Austin in 1999, 1:13:31; Chris Benoit in 2004, 1:26:26; Rey Mysterio in 2006, 1:11:31; Randy Orton in 2009, 1:13:02; and Shinsuke Nakamura in 2018, 1:04:58. Of these 6, Michaels is the only one whose WrestleMania match was longer than his time in the Rumble.
1st Rumble PPV to not end with the Rumble match since 1988. Also, 1st Rumble PPV to end with a World Title match instead of the Rumble (Bret Hart defended his WWE Title against The Undertaker after the Rumble match). And, 1st of 3 straight Rumble PPVs that ended with a WWE Title Match.
Longest non-Rumble match at a Rumble PPV: Bret “The Hitman” Hart VS The Undertaker for the WWE Title, 28:31.

1997: 1st Rumble PPV to be held in a stadium. The 1997 Rumble was held in the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX. Also, the 1st of 3 Rumble PPVs held in San Antonio, TX. Funny enough, all 3 took place in years ending in a 7 (1997, 2007, and 2017).
Largest card for a Rumble PPV: 9 matches were held at the 1997 Rumble; 2 dark matches, a Free For All match, and 6 on the main PPV. Though, it shares the record with the 1999 Rumble PPV.
Only Rumble match for “Fake” Razor Ramon, Pierroth, Mil Máscaras, Cibernético, Latin Lover, and Flash Funk.
Only match at a Rumble PPV for Mini Mankind, Mini Vader, Canek, Héctor Garza, Perro Aguayo, Fuerza Guerrera, Heavy Metal, and Jerry Estrada.
2nd man to compete in 7 Rumble matches without competing in any other match at a Rumble PPV: Jake “The Snake” Roberts. Yes, The Snake has been in 7 Rumbles and never wrestled in any other kind of match at a Rumble PPV. Also, Jake Roberts is the 1st man to draw the same number 3 times. Roberts has been Number 7 in 1989, 1996, and 1997. 4 other men have drawn the same number 3 times.
Most Self-Eliminations in 1 Rumble match: 3. Yes, 3 men eliminated themselves from the Rumble match. Ahmed Johnson was first. He jumped over the ropes to go after rival Faarooq, who came down to help his Nation Of Domination stablemate Crush. The second was Mil Mascaras, who jumped over the ropes to attack Pierroth after Mascaras eliminated him. And, the final man to eliminate himself was Faarooq, who jumped over the ropes to get away from Johnson after he came down with a 2X4 to attack Faarooq.
1st announcer to compete in the Rumble match he was calling: Jerry “The King” Lawler. Lawler entered at Number 22 after he had been on commentary for much of the match with Vince McMahon and Jim Ross. However, Bret Hart would eliminate Lawler in a few seconds, and The King would return to commentary. Funny enough, Lawler would pull off this feat again in 2012.
1st of 2 Rumble winners to not receive a WrestleMania World Title match after 1993: Stone Cold Steve Austin. Austin is the 1st Rumble winner to not get a World Title match at the following WrestleMania after the prize was introduced in 1993. Austin was technically thrown out by Bret “The Hitman” Hart, but since the referees were distracted by Mankind and Terry Funk fighting on the outside, Austin snuck back in and threw out Vader, The Undertaker, and Bret Hart to win the match. However, Austin’s WrestleMania World Title match was taken away as punishment, and a match between Austin and the 3 men he last threw out for the match was made for the February In Your House, which later became a WWE Title match after Shawn Michaels lost his smile and vacated the title.
2nd Man to get 10 eliminations: Stone Cold Steve Austin. Also, the 1st Rumble Winner to get 10 eliminations. The only other winner to get 10 or more eliminations was Braun Strowman in the Greatest Royal Rumble match in 2018, with 13. Also, Austin’s the only man to throw out both Hart brothers (Bret & Owen) in the same Rumble match.
2nd Rumble Triple Crown: Stone Cold Steve Austin. Austin became the 2nd man to win a Rumble match, was the Iron Man (45:07), and racked up the Most Eliminations (10) in 1 Rumble match.
2nd Double Royal (King Of The Ring and Royal Rumble winner): Stone Cold Steve Austin. He’s also the 1st Double Royal to win the Rumble more than once as Austin would win next year’s Rumble as well. And, he’s one of the 3 Double Royals whose wins came 6 months apart; Austin won the King Of The Ring on June 23, 1996 and the Rumble on January 19, 1997.
Only man to lose the WWE Title at the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania in the same year: Sycho Sid. After losing the title to Shawn Michaels, Sid would end up with the title again a month later, defeating Bret Hart a day after he won the vacated title thanks to Stone Cold Steve Austin. He would then go on to lose the title to The Undertaker at WrestleMania 13.
2nd of 3 Royal Rumbles to have more buys than the WrestleMania from the same year: Royal Rumble 1997 did 244,000 buys to WrestleMania 13’s 237,000.

1998: Largest wrestling crowd to attend a wrestling show in Northern California in 35 years: 18,542 fans packed the San Jose Arena in San Jose, CA. That topped the largest northern California wrestling crowd of 17,000, for a Ray Stevens/Pepper Gomez match in 1962 at San Francisco's Cow Palace. Of course, this record has been subsequently shattered by later events in the region; most notably dwarfed by WrestleMania 31. The event also did $414,000 at the gate, which toppled the previous area record of $192,000 for WCW SuperBrawl the previous year. WWE also did almost $160,000 in merchandise at the event.
1st WWE PPV where the matches for the Classic Triple Crown (WWE, Intercontinental, and World Tag Team Titles) did not end with a pinfall or submission. Ken Shamrock had initially made The Rock tap out to his ankle lock to win the Intercontinental Title, but he refused to let the hold go, resulting in a reverse decision and a DQ. The New Age Outlaws intentionally got themselves disqualified when Billy Gunn hit Animal with a chair to retain their Tag Team Titles. And, since the WWE Title was defended in a Casket Match where to win you had to throw your opponent into a casket and closing it, that match was going to end with no pinfall or submission no matter who won. Also, since the Rumble took place in between these matches, only the 1st 2 matches on the card (Vader vs. Goldust and a mini's 6-man Tag) both ended with pins. For the rest of the night, there were no official finishes via pin or submission.
Only Rumble match for Tom Brandi, Thrasher, and Chainz.
Only match at a Rumble PPV for Nova, Battalion, El Torito, and Tarantula.
Last man to no show: Skull. Skull was attacked by Los Boricuas before the match, mistaking him for Stone Cold Steve Austin. He was unable to compete later on, and to date, there hasn’t been another no show in the Rumble match.
1st Man to compete in the Rumble match under at least 3 different names: Charles Wright. Wright’s 1st Rumble was in 1993 as Papa Shango. His 2nd was in 1996 as Kama. The 1998 Rumble would be the 3rd Rumble for him and the 3rd time he competed in a Rumble under a different name, Kama Mustafa (this counts as a name change since he now had a last name and had changed gimmicks as Kama was an MMA fighter while Kama Mustafa was a black militant in the Nation Of Domination).
Most appearances in 1 Rumble match: Mick Foley. In the same Rumble, Foley would become the 2nd man to compete in the Rumble match under 3 different names (since Wright came out before Foley’s 3rd appearance, he got to claim the 1st). Foley entered at Number 1 as Cactus Jack, Number 16 as Mankind, and Number 28 as Dude Love. All together, Foley lasted 19:21 (9:21 as Cactus, 2:07 as Mankind, and 7:53 as Love).
3rd back-to-back Rumble Winner: Stone Cold Steve Austin. To date, he’s the last man to have won 2 straight Rumble matches.
3rd straight Rumble PPV to end with a WWE Title match: Shawn Michaels VS The Undertaker in a Casket Match. Also, only Rumble PPV to end with a Casket Match. Also, the last Rumble PPV to end with a World Title match until 2006.
Shawn Michaels’s last successful PPV title defense. Michaels successfully defended his WWE Title against The Undertaker, which would be the last time he retained the WWE Title and the last time he retained any of the titles he’s held throughout his career on PPV.

1999: Largest card for a Rumble PPV: 9 matches were held at the 1999 Rumble; 1 dark match, 2 Sunday Night Heat matches, and 6 on the main PPV. Though, it shares the record with the 1997 Rumble PPV.
Only European Title match at a Rumble PPV: X-Pac VS Gangrel.
1st Women’s Title match at a Rumble PPV since 1989: Sable VS Luna Vachon. Also, since it was a Leather Strap Match, this was the only time that gimmick match happened at a Rumble PPV.
Only I Quit Match at a Rumble PPV: Mankind VS The Rock for the WWE Title.
Only Rumble match for Vince McMahon, Droz, Gillberg, Dan Severn, Tiger Ali Singh, and The Blue Meanie.
Only match at a Rumble PPV for Sable and Luna Vachon.
Emptiest Rumble match. By which I mean that the ring was completely empty TWICE during the match. The first time was when Stone Cold Steve Austin chased after Vince McMahon who escaped after Austin eliminated Golga, leading to the aforementioned ambush in the bathroom that would take Austin out of most of the match. This ended up going on for so long that Droz came out with no one in the ring and had to wait for the next guy to come out. The second time was when Kane came in at 17 and cleared the ring only to later eliminate himself after attacking some people from an insane asylum sent to take him away. The ring remained empty until Vince showed back up to remind everyone he was still in the match.
1st man to have his Rumble number stolen by another wrestler: Mosh. The Headbanger was supposed to be in the 1999 Rumble, but he was attacked by Mabel, who then took Mosh’s spot.
1st Man to compete in the Rumble match under 4 different names: Charles Wright. After getting to 3 in 1998, Wright got to be the 1st to 4 as The Godfather.
2nd Man to compete in 7 consecutive Rumble matches: Owen Hart (1993-1999). Owen joined Rick Martel in having competed in 7 Rumble matches in a row.
1st Woman to compete in the Rumble match: Chyna. Also, 1st Woman to eliminate a man in the Rumble match; Chyna eliminated Mark Henry.
2nd Rumble match where the 1st 2 men in the match were the last 2: Stone Cold Steve Austin & Vince McMahon drew Numbers 1 & 2 respectively and ended up being the last men in the match. Though, their performances weren’t as impressive as the 1st 2 (Shawn Michaels & The British Bulldog) as Austin and McMahon spent most of the time out of the match. McMahon slipped out of the ring at the beginning, and Stone Cold chased him. However, McMahon led Austin into a trap as McMahon’s Corporation stable attacked him in the women’s bathroom, taking Austin out for half the match. McMahon never reentered until Ken Shamrock came out, and then he slipped back out to join the commentary team. Austin would return to the match, and after managing to outlast the other competitors, threw McMahon back into the ring to finish the match. Despite spending much of the match out of the ring, Austin and McMahon were 1999’s Iron Men since they were never officially eliminated, posting a time of 56:38. Funny enough, if you took out the time Austin wasn’t in the ring, he still ends up as 1999’s Iron Man at 25:47, which would make him the 2nd shortest Iron Man time.
2nd of 2 men to compete in only 1 Rumble match and win it: Vince McMahon. Also, Vince is the 1st of 2 Rumble winners to win the match with just 1 elimination. Vince managed to win the match by eliminating Stone Cold Steve Austin thanks to a distraction from The Rock.
Oldest Rumble winner: Vince McMahon, 53.
2nd of 2 Rumble winners to not receive a WrestleMania World Title match after 1993: Vince McMahon. McMahon would later announce that he wouldn’t challenge The Rock for the WWE Title at WrestleMania XV, making him the Only Rumble Winner to give up his World Title match at WrestleMania. Because of this, Stone Cold Steve Austin got the WWE Title match against The Rock since he was the Runner-Up.

2000: 1st Rumble PPV held in Madison Square Garden. Since this was the 13th Rumble event, this made the Royal Rumble the last of the Big 4 to finally get to MSG. Both WrestleMania (1985) and SummerSlam (1988) debuted in MSG, while the Survivor Series got to WWE’s Mecca in 1996, its 10th show. Also, the Royal Rumble is the only one of the Big 4 to have had just 2 MSG PPVs; all the others got 3. And, this was the 1st WWE show at MSG to break over $1 million at the gate, drawing $1.14 million.
1st Rumble PPV to air on free TV since 1988. Well, in the U.K. at least. The 2000 Rumble PPV was the 1st WWE PPV to air on Channel 4 in the U.K. Of course, Channel 4 would insert commercial breaks into the broadcast, but still the fans across the Atlantic still got free PPVs.
1st Rumble PPV to air against the NFL Playoffs. The 1991 and 1994 Rumble PPVs were held on Saturdays since the NFL had no bye week in between the NFC and AFC Championship Games and the Super Bowl. In 2000, there was no bye week as well; but instead of holding the Rumble on Saturday, WWE just bit the bullet and went up against the playoffs. This would happen again in 2002, 2003, and 2016.
1st Tables Match: The Hardyz VS The Dudley Boyz.
1st WWE Title match on PPV for Mick Foley as Cactus Jack. Foley had already challenged for the title as Mankind and Dude Love. The Street Fight with Triple H at the 2000 Rumble would complete the hat trick for Foley’s famous gimmicks. Funny enough, he’d go for 4 under his real name at WrestleMania 2000.
1st Rumble match with no one timers. Every competitor who competed in the 2000 Rumble match had either already competed in a past Rumble or would compete in another later on. Also, all the wrestlers on the undercard had also either wrestled at a past Rumble PPV or would wrestle at a future one. Though, the Miss Rumble 2000 swimsuit contest featured 7 people who made their only appearance at a Rumble PPV: Jacqueline, Barbara Bush, The Kat, Tony Garea, Johnny Valiant, Freddie Blassie, The Fabulous Moolah, and Mae Young. Also, The Mean Street Posse made their one and only appearance at a Rumble PPV when they ran into the match after being removed from the 2000 Rumble match earlier on Heat.
1st Man to score the 1st 7 eliminations in a Rumble match: Rikishi. Yes, the 7 men Rikishi eliminated in the 2000 Rumble were the 1st 7 eliminations in the match; and Rikishi would be the 8th. This wouldn’t happen again until 2020 when Brock Lesnar scored the 1st 13 eliminations in a row.
Only woman to compete in 2 men’s Rumble matches: Chyna. And, much like the previous year, she’d score an elimination, taking out Chris Jericho.
5th and 6th Men to compete in 5 or more Rumble matches without competing in any non-Rumble matches: Bob Backlund and The British Bulldog. Backlund was in 4 Rumble matches in a row from 1993 to 1996 plus the 2000 Rumble match, and Davey Boy was in the 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 2000 Rumble matches. Never once did these two wrestle in a non-Rumble match at a Rumble PPV.
The British Bulldog’s last US PPV appearance. His last WWE PPV would be the U.K. PPV Insurrextion in May 2000, held in London. After that, Bulldog would leave WWE and never show up on WWE TV again.
1st Rumble match since 1989 where no one lasted over 30 minutes in the match. Test went the longest at just 26 minutes. Though, technically, this record should belong to the 1999 Rumble match since Stone Cold Steve Austin only actually lasted 25:47 in the match. However, since Austin was still technically in the match during his time spent out of the ring, his official time in 1999 was 56:38, which he shared with Vince McMahon since they were both the 1st 2 men to enter. So, the 2000 Rumble match holds the record since there were no out-of-the-match shenanigans.

2001: 1st PPV held in New Orleans, LA.
1st Rumble PPV where all the non-Rumble matches were title matches. On the main PPV card, the Tag Team, Intercontinental, Women’s, and WWE Titles were all defended. Though, there was a Sunday Night Heat match, between Lo Down and Kaientai; but it was for a spot in the Rumble match. So, every match at the 2001 Rumble had something on the line. Other Rumble PPVs to have all title matches for the non-Rumble matches (excluding pre-show and dark matches) were 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 (which also had a title match on the pre-show), 2016 (which also had the Rumble match for a title), 2017, and 2018.
1st time the Men’s Tag Team Champions lost the belts at a Rumble PPV. While the 1988 Rumble saw the Women’s Tag Team Titles change hands and the 1995 Rumble holds the distinction of seeing new Tag Team Champions crowned for the 1st time at a Rumble PPV, that match was the finals of a tournament to crown new champs after a vacancy. The 2001 Rumble would be the 1st time a team actually lost the belts at a Rumble PPV. Those champs were Edge & Christian, losing their titles to the Dudley Boyz in the PPV’s 1st match.
Only Ladder Match at a Rumble PPV: Chris Jericho VS Chris Benoit for the Intercontinental Title.
Only Rumble match for Drew Carey, Raven, and Tazz.
Only match at a Rumble PPV for Taka Michinoku (Sunday Night Heat match) and Ivory.
1st Celebrity to compete in a Rumble match: Drew Carey.
The Big Show’s 1st PPV appearance since Judgment Day 2000.
1st Man to compete in the Rumble match under 5 different names: Charles Wright. This time, he competed at The Goodfather, a member of Right To Censor, making him the only man to have competed in the Rumble match under 5 different names and gimmicks.
1st Man to get over 10 eliminations: Kane, with 11. Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold Steve Austin had been tied for the Most Eliminations record at 10 until Kane broke their record. Also, 1st Iron Man to have the Most Eliminations without winning the Rumble match. The last 2 Iron Men to have the Most Eliminations were also Rumble winners, Shawn Michaels in 1995 and Stone Cold Steve Austin in 1997.
Number with the Most Winners: 27, with 4 winners: Big John Studd (1989), Yokozuna (1993), Bret “The Hitman” Hart (1994), and Stone Cold Steve Austin (2001).
Most Rumble wins: Stone Cold Steve Austin with 3. To date, Austin is the only man to have won 3 Rumble matches. Also, the 1st Rumble Winner to last less than 10 minutes; Austin was only in the match for 9:38. And, Austin became the 1st man to reach 4 Final Fours.

2002: Last Intercontinental Title change at a Rumble PPV: William Regal winning the title off of Edge is, to date, the last time a new Intercontinental Champion was crowned at the Royal Rumble. In fact, it would be the last Intercontinental Title match at a Rumble PPV until 2016.
Only man to have beaten The Rock on PPV 3 Times without ever losing to The Rock: Chris Jericho. Jericho successfully defended his WWE Undisputed World Title against The Rock at the 2002 Rumble after having beaten him at No Mercy 2001 and Vengeance 2001. Funny enough, those 2 matches were for the WCW Title, represented by the Big Gold Belt, which also was part of the WWE Undisputed World Title (it was represented with 2 belts at the time). So, Jericho technically beat The Rock for the same title 3 times on PPV and never once lost to him.
Only Rumble match for Lance Storm.
Only match at a Rumble PPV for Jazz.
Longest Men’s 30-man Rumble match: 1:09:22. Also, the 4th longest Rumble match. It comes behind the 2011 40-man Rumble (1:09:51), the 2019 Women’s Rumble (1:12:00), and the Greatest Royal Rumble (1:17:20).
1st Man to reach the Final Four 5 times: Stone Cold Steve Austin. He had previously been in the Final 4 for 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2001. The 2002 Rumble was his 5th one. Funny enough, if Austin hadn’t have accidentally fallen out of the ring in the 1996 Rumble, he would have been in the Final Four that year as that was the plan, which would have made him the only man to have been in the Final Four of the Rumble match for every Rumble match he wrestled in. Also, Austin joined Tito Santana, Barry Darsow, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Rick Martel, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Bob Backlund, and The British Bulldog in the 5 Timers Club (having been in 5 or more Rumble matches without ever wrestling in a non-Rumble match at a Rumble PPV).
1st Man to reach 30 cumulative eliminations: Stone Cold Steve Austin. Prior to the 2002 Rumble match, Austin had 29 eliminations across 5 Rumble matches. By time he was eliminated, Austin would total 36 eliminations.
Only 3-time Iron Man: Stone Cold Steve Austin. Austin set another benchmark in the 2002 Rumble match, this time by being the Iron Man for a 3rd time, setting a time of 26:46. In 1997, Austin lasted 45:07, and in 1999, he has an official time of 56:38 despite spending much of that time out of the match. Though, as I’ve mentioned, Austin was still the 1999 Rumble Iron Man with his time out of the match subtracted from his total, at 25:47.
3rd Double Royal (King Of The Ring and Royal Rumble winner): Triple H. Also, 1st Double Royal that didn’t get both wins 6 months apart. Triple H won the 1997 King Of The Ring but had to wait 5 years to win a Rumble match.
Highest Buyrate for a Rumble PPV: 670,000 buys.

2003: 1st Rumble PPV of the first Brand Extension.
1st non-title women’s match at a Rumble PPV: Torrie Wilson VS Dawn Marie. Until that point, every women’s match at a Rumble PPV had been a title match. The 1st one back in 1988 was for the Women’s Tag Team Titles, and every other one had been for the old Women’s Title.
1st World Heavyweight Title match at a Rumble PPV: Triple H VS Scott Steiner.
Only Rumble match for Christopher Nowinski and Bill DeMott.
Only match at a Rumble PPV for Steven Richards (pre-show match), Torrie Wilson, and Dawn Marie.
1st Rumble match where the 1st man to enter the match was the 1st man eliminated: Shawn Michaels was the unlucky soul to achieve this accomplishment after he was attacked from behind by Chris Jericho. Up until the 2003 Rumble match, with the exception of 1995, the first man gone was either the 2nd or 3rd entrant. Since then, 2 other men who entered at Number 1 were the 1st one gone: Ric Flair in 2007 and The Miz in 2015.
2nd Man to reach 4 Final Fours: Glenn Jacobs (1997 as “Fake” Diesel and 2000, 2001, and 2003 as Kane).
1st Rumble match where the last 2 men in the ring were the last 2 men to enter the match: Number 29, Brock Lesnar, last eliminated Number 30, The Undertaker, to win the match. The feat would be accomplished again in 2008.
1st Rumble match where a competitor who drew a number after 27 won the match: Brock Lesnar won the 2003 Rumble match from Number 29. Until then, Number 27 was the highest number to have a winner. Since then, numbers 30 (2007, 2008, and 2016) and 28 (2005, 2014, and Women’s 2019) have won three times, and 29 won once more (2010).
Youngest Rumbler Winner: Brock Lesnar, 25.
2nd Rumble winner to pull double duty: Brock Lesnar. Lesnar defeated The Big Show in a match to earn his spot in the Rumble match that he won.
4th Double Royal (King Of The Ring and Royal Rumble winner): Brock Lesnar. Also, the 3rd and last Double Royal whose wins came 6 months apart; Lesnar won the 2003 Rumble match 6 months after winning the 2002 King Of The Ring tournament. That was also the last tournament on PPV, so unless WWE suddenly decides to bring back the PPV, he could very well stay the last.
3rd of 3 Royal Rumbles to have more buys than the WrestleMania from the same year: Royal Rumble 2003 did 585,000 buys; WrestleMania XIX did 560,000 buys.
