The idea of Retribution (not so much the stable wholesale) as some anti-WWE force would’ve been interesting to present as foes of the Authority.

I had blocked a lot of this out of my memory good god HHH and Steph are such atrocious television characters.
Was the Authority angle the start of WWE booking being like 99% downer moments to try and get those shocked crowd reaction shots? It was definitely in full effect here. You get a glimmer of hope, but that hope is all for a heel turn low blow betrayal or a quick Brock squash. I feel like it went on like 2013-2019 and only finally lightened up a bit this year with Drew's reign.

Stephanie was pretty awful in this angle. She got one over on just about everyone again and again. All to set herself up as the heel in the potential big deal celebrity match they were trying to get off the ground with Rousey. Not good. Not fun to watch either. And I was there for H’s Rumble win so I didn’t hear the commentary actually putting him over. Oh goodness. Didn't Dusty get in trouble for his promo against the Authority? Or with Stephanie in particular?

Remember they’d make the whole roster stand on the stage and watch as the destroyed DB? They went out of their way to torpedo the entire damn roster. Th re were times when-I remember ADR and Ziggler specifically-some appeared to be getting fed up and were going to do something about it. But nope, they just stood there, too scared of the super sexy and all powerful Trips and Steph to do anything about it. Just completely asinine.

You wonder what the perception of the Authority would be had they lost at Survivor Series and NOT come back. I had blocked a lot of this out of my memory good god HHH and Steph are such atrocious television characters. The only version of them I want to see on my TV again is Lame cool Dad HHH and Soccer Mom Steph.

Ah, the Authority. Just when you thought the original Reign of Terror wasn't bad enough.

There are a lot of factors into WWE's staggering ratings decline over the last decade
But The Authority being a prominant stalwart force for YEARS, is definitely one of the biggest reasons to me. As others have said, nothing like going through all this work to tell fans they and their opinions do not mean jack shit.

They both believe that if people boo you, you're great heels, ignoring completely that there's more to it than that. The job of a heel is to get people to pay to see them get beat and, ultimately, to make the faces look good while they use the faces to massage their egos, have them stand there and smile like morons while they're picked apoart with petty, fourth wall breaking digs.

The Authority made for some truly terrible television and pretty much ruined Seth Rollins' first reign for me.

Heel authority figures are one of the main reasons I've been driven away from WWE viewing. It worked with Vince vs Austin and the Corporation, but afterwards has become tiresome. It makes the company a heel which it should never be, and makes faces look like twats for even trying to win titles sanctioned by those very same heels. It's led to wrestlers acting like losers when they have to stand on stage together like scolded children, or begging for their jobs, or getting verbal abuse and slaps from CEO's, CFO's and other annoying carnies who are booking for their own egos rather than legitimately trying to build stars.

Man, how did Big Show squander that iron clad contract? This dude Show fumbled the bag (Kayfabe). Had a multi-million dollar wrongful termination suit standing by, theoretically had the heels by the legal short hairs and what does this dummy ask for? A title match, something that’s he’s had a million times. And then he just loses, like a big ol dummy. Thank goodness Show is Teflon because they went out of their way to f*** dude up. The heel turn was a mercy killing, more than anything.

I admit I didn't watch the video yet but can someone answer a question for me? I remember that Survivor Series match where Ziggler defeated the Authority and put them out of power, but then the next time I watched a couple weeks later the Authority was still in charge. What was the kayfabe explanation? It was Ziggler and anything he does doesn’t count.

You make a really good pint about "titles sanctioned by those very same heels." These angles turn the championship into primarily something that the company wants on a "marketable" star...completely trashing the in-universe idea that it's the prize of a prestigious competition. It also drives home that authority figures are insanely overpowered. When the actual, real-life people who are in charge of the show are also on screen and manipulating events, it removes the stakes of anything else because at that point, the author is just hanging out in the story and shaping it as it goes along - and not only is nobody actually portrayed as powerful enough to counter that, it's not actually logical for anybody to be able to compete with that level of in-story power. The whole "Cena has the power to bring back the Authority" nonsense clearly derives from this - what control is there, in-universe, that can be placed on the people who in-and-out-of-universe run the show? There isn't! The only thing that could maybe logically change the balance of power is an in-universe union, and we all know how much that isn't going to happen as a babyface thing.

Man, how did Big Show squander that iron clad contract? IIRC, there was a smackdown segment where Otunga examined the case and said Show had grounds to sue The Authority, so they straight up violated the contract's terms to fire him.

The feud that killed many people's interest in the product, saw huge ratings drop off, really solidified that WWE management give 0 shits what the fans want and, in a roundabout way, caused the birth of AEW.
I wonder if Hunter and Steph are still pleased with it?
