Listening to the latest JR podcast, Meltzer said that Dusty Rhodes might have gotten an early WWF release prier to the 1991 Royal Rumble. I wondering did the WWF have a backup plan ready in case Dusty talk himself out of an early release?
I thought it was odd how many feuds DiBise had at the time, and now it makes sense. I assume if Dusty is not there for the 91 Rumble, that Kerry would fill in. They did that Brother Love angle when Kerry saved Dustin, so it would make sense.

That certainly sounds plausible. Texas Tornado and Dustin Rhodes sounds like a quite a cool team on paper for a one-off match as well.

That would have been Kerry's last high profile match. He went so far down the card, sadly.
I can't see Dusty ditching Dustin in another federation. If Dusty goes I see Dustin going so what would have happened then? Maybe a Virgil turn on Superstars and a singles match with them.

If Dusty and Dustin both left, then maybe Kerry teams with his brother Kevin for a one-off.

Dustin was by himself in the NWA. He was one of the jobbers for Flair's work out for Chi Town Rumble 89. So Dustin being their short term is not impossible.

Well this info is accurate, it was obvious Dusty was on his way out. Though if you believe that Starrcade 88 Flair and Rick Steiner rumor, it might be poetic justice from Flair's prospective. This was Dusty's last WWF house show appearance. Dustin on the other hand appeared in several January 91 house shows.
WWF @ Toledo, OH - December 30, 1990 (matinee) (7,300) Jimmy Snuka pinned Haku Virgil pinned Dusty Rhodes at the 45-second mark Shane Douglas pinned Buddy Rose Tugboat pinned Dino Bravo Hulk Hogan pinned Earthquake The Big Bossman pinned Bobby Heenan at the 16-second mark Jake Roberts defeated Rick Martel via disqualification The Legion of Doom defeated the Orient Express & Mr. Fuji in a handicap match

Yeah, Dustin was even regularly on TV wrestling in the NWA through late February 1989.

If Dusty and Dustin both left, then maybe Kerry teams with his brother Kevin for a one-off. Unless this match was happening in Texas I gotta believe the crowd would've greeted Kevin Von Erich with crickets. Roddy Piper was working house shows at the time against Mr. Perfect. Piper and Kerry vs. Dibiase and Virgil would've worked, and it would help set up Piper's friendship with Virgil and his subsequent feud with Dibiase.
