Far too often with the WWE, it's not so much failing to pull the trigger, but realising someone has gotten too over then either trying to transfer their heat to someone else or flat out stomping them on camera until the fans turn on them. 'Boy, that Zac Ryder sure sucks and is whiny after the WWE kneecapped him on camera for getting over then used his ideas like they were their own.' I remember people also justifying it by saying Ryder stunk up the joint during a promo with Bryan and Punk. So f***ing what? He may not have been on that guys' level, but it's better for the fans when the midcard also has over acts. When the WWE want someone over, they'll cover their weaknesses, if they don't, they'll expose them for all the world to see, even though they benefit from talents getting pops and selling merch.

He said one line about how proud his Dad was for winning the title, ending with his catchphrase. If anything, they DID go to his strengths because he wasn’t going to do a long promo like Punk and Bryan could. And the crowd popped for it as well so I don’t know how that’s justification at all.

People forgot that over midcard acts stood and cut promos with the top guys all the time. I mean Jimmy Vaillant stood with Dusty Rhodes, Tugboat & other goofs was endorsed by Hogan, and nobody blinked an eye.

Samoa Joe during his feud with Styles. They should’ve pulled the trigger and given him the belt after the man was out here making “Oh Wendyyyy” big.

Breezango on SD when they were starting to get pretty over with the Fashion Files, too. AND the ascension during the same time A tag team who are STILL the longest reigning NXT Tag Team champions at 364 days, yet the moment they get called up to the main roster (literally not even a WEEK into their in-ring debut) they rip them apart for not being the older tag teams they were clearly inspired by, and then feeding them to the very same teams not more than a month later. You want a Cliff's Notes version of NXT Main Roster booking gone to shit, you need look no further than Viktor and Konnor.

Came to say this. We discussed this ad infinitum in WoW and in the WCW/Invasion threads. Didn't they mute out RVD chants at one point on purpose?

Literally anyone HHH worked from 2002-2004. Kane, Booker, RVD all could have had runs with the belt but they didn’t happen for obvious reasons. Even Orton in 04 was sacrificed at the altar and didn’t get back on track until the next year. HHH = Anakin The survivors of the inVasion = the last of the Jedi Reign of Terror = Order 66 against WCW and ECW.

I wonder how many tag teams we could do this with in recent memory... I'll just go with three four off the top of my head. -Heavy Machinery -Enzo & Cass -Riott Squad -Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville YES. Esp. the second. Say what you will about them as people (to me they're just crazy/eccentric rather than scummy, and Cass has reasons to be the way he was) but E&C could have been the new New Age Outlaws: not GREAT wrestlers, but insanely over and good mic work.

They just shitted on them from jump.

Shinsuke Nakamura, TWICE. I can understand why John Cena barely comes back anymore when the last time he busted his ass to help someone get over WWE completely shit the bed.

I imagine most people who grew up on wrestling had those guys who weren't anything special, but they loved them anyway. Midcard stalwarts who you always cheered on because you liked them for a sometimes very arbitrary reason but they were your guy. That's all people wanted for Ryder. The show isn't only the main event, and there's just as much enjoyment in seeing midcarders succeed on the path up the card through to whatever the main event is. The fact WWE can have twelve hour Wrestlemanias but then also clearly only be booking the last couple hours of it with any real care or import is baffling.

Samoa Joe during his feud with Styles. They should’ve pulled the trigger and given him the belt after the man was out here making “Oh Wendyyyy” big. It would've been historical, Joe having won World Titles in ROH, TNA, and WWE. They probably thought it would legitimize the other titles, so no trigger pulled.

Raven. Vince did t want him and never gave him a chance.
Raven was getting good pops when he first signed with WWE. There was legit excitement about ha e Raven in WWE at the time. I firmly believe Raven could have been a solid transitional World Champion as a heel if WWE would have given him anything to work with.
With him it was a case of coming in hot and getting your legs cut out pretty quickly

Like, outside of the start of his run in TNA, he never was able to keep to that again.

not just saying it because of today's news but LUKE f***ING HARPER. He was one of the most over guys in late 2016/early 2017 and was outshining Orton and Wyatt during their feud. Dude should have been a monster heel champion.

But I will say that Raven as a tweener/face in April-July of 2001 definitely had legs... but then the Invasion happened.

Solid hand who can have a solid match with anyone, can be inserted anywhere on the card while also providing a veteran presence backstage. I think his TNA run showed he definitely had a great bit to contribute. I still consider his Backlash match vs Rhyno to be one of the better WWE hardcore matches.

I feel that Vince treated Finn Balor's comeback in 2017 as a long-con burial to avenge for the offense of daring to tear his shoulder during a title match, pal. Yeah, yeah...two lacklustre I-C title runs and a fool's errand throw at Lesnar for the Universal title (that's how it was hyped - that Balor hadn't a f***ing hope in hell of winning), then to get the shit beat out of him at MITB and then having to give back his wins over Bray to the Fiend - yeah, I think I'd be asking to go anywhere else by then. There's failing to pull the trigger, then there's turning the gun on oneself.

Samoa Joe to Brock -
“Look at me when I’m talking to you or we can straighten this out right now”
No one has talked shit like that to Brock and it seem like someone could actually back it up like Joe. Dude was hotter than anything in the company and should have been the one to beat Brock.
