He was finally starting to get into his groove during the pandemic, going even sillier, he had a fun match with Billy Gunn.
Then Tully came back, told him to stop being a fool and he want back to being boring. They should have just dropped Tully and run with him being goofy.

He feels like he has no idea what character he's going for so he kind of just does multiple conflicting ones at once. Yup. I couldn't tell you anything consistent about his character. It seems to change every time I see him. That's my biggest issue with how AEW has used him. They throw all kinds of different things at him to see what sticks, but they don't really give something a chance to stick before trying something else. I was never a fan of Tully being his manager. I always felt Tully overshadowed Spears and that's not what a manager should be doing. Tully enhances FTR. Taz enhances Cage and Hobbs. Tully was the star over Spears. Even on here, every week, I'd see threads talking about how awesome Tully was and barely mention Spears.

Comedy and heeling? Who does he think he is, the Four Horsemen? Seriously, how many towns did Flair get his clothes torn off in by faces? Dozens? I get a lot of criticism of Spears, like that he had trouble getting any decent angles after a while, and that the weighted glove storyline didn't work well because no faces seemed to give a solitary shit about him doing stuff like trying to re-cripple Sorenson, but a heel being made a fool of wasn't one of the issues. Austin used to work like how Spears does not, but when he become 'Stone Cold', he said he had to leave the goofy stuff he did as 'Stunning Steve' aside. Austin has flat out said he would not have gotten over as a serious heel when he feuded with Bret if he kept doing the goofy stuff he did in WCW

If he's meant to be a threatening upper midcard heel, then he needs to leave the goofing behind, full stop. But if he's meant to be a goof, then he needs to lean into it 100% instead of the halfway nonsense.
