Apparently, he thinks opening presents on Christmas morning is the appropriate time to complain about Black Lives Matter. I literally left in the middle of opening presents.
I f***ing hate this dude.

Sorry about your negative experience. Stuff like that is why I prefer to spend the holidays/everyday alone.

Currently weighing the benefits of seeing my parents for a socially distanced visit vs. my desire to not hear bullshit about stolen elections on Christmas Day.

Sorry you had to deal with that. It’s Christmas, shit like this shouldn’t happen. But there’s always people like this, it seems. Honestly to me, this was a big fear that I had this year since I have members of my extended family that act like this, so not being able to see them feels like a bit of a blessing in disguise, as bad as I feel for believing this.

I love my grandmother, but her visits have become a source of anxiety for my family because there's a strong possibility that she will be racist and/or start banging on about immigrants, Brexit, and Nigel Farage. It was particularly nerve-racking when she met my brother's foreign girlfriend.

Someone having a different viewpoint or opinion than yours can only ruin your Christmas if you decide to let it. I do think bringing up a hot button topic during present opening is really bad of the Mother's boyfriend though, at least wait until after dinner or something Yeah, but you can't control that. You can only control how you do or don't react to it. I would ignore the comment and re-focus the conversation to someone else ("Hey Mom, the tree looks great this year!").

The problem is the OP knew that once the hot button subject matter was introduced to the conversation, it wasn't going to end, no matter what he did. Whatever positivity he injected into the conversation was going to be ignored by the offender and the hot button stuff would just continue. Sometimes, removing yourself from the situation, is the only positive course of action one can take. Unfortunately, I had a father like this, and am well aware of how this kind of scenario goes. It's part of the reason I grew up to be a therapist, and worked with emotionally disturbed children, because it takes one, to know one.

I'm sorry, man. Sometimes all it takes is one comment to ruin your day. One of my cousins has very strong political views, leaning towards a certain politician. Last year, at Christmas, my aunt, who has a strict "no politics" rule, made him leave because he started up about events in the news at that time.

The thing is, he has been told by my mother not to say that shit around the family anyway. Regardless of what day or time it is. We are a diverse family, and we do not want to listen to him say bigoted things.
So of course he chooses opening gifts on Christmas morning to go there.
He can believe whatever he wants, but he needs to talk about that shit online with other racist people, we don't want to hear it.

At least politics can change from year to year. My wife's cousin has the problem that she cannot stand her stepfather because, well, he seems to behave as though he thinks that the stepfather-stepdaughter category in XVideos is normal behavior. It only got worse when she got married to a younger woman because now he has two younger women to perv after openly in front of his wife (one of whom, I remind you, is the mother of one of those women).
Yeah, she HATES him with a fiery passion, and not in the kind of way he would hope could lead to something kinky.
Which again, would not even happen even if she didn't mind the fact that he was married to her mother, simply because she isn't remotely interested in men at all. Also, is quite happily married herself (they really are a cute couple).

OP I get it.
For 20 years I had to put up with 2 relatives that was extremely openly racist, oddly cause that side of the family is a mixture of white, hispanic, asian. And both of them are/were ministers. Father and son.....
I would just ignore them as much as I could. Knowing that they would get paid back for just being dumb as shit. The cousin has watched his Kids Ministry die over the past 6 years cause of various issues with my cousin.
The father,he got his hip replaced 8 years ago,the glue they use is suppose to last like 10 years. In 2 years the glue in his new hip was not working and he had to go back in for surgery.
THankfully last year in the summer my Dad finally told his sister "Look I love ya. But I can't stand being around your husband or son. I rather not see either of them again"
But also starting 5 years ago I started spending Xmas eve and Xmas with my Gf and her family. Much smaller gatherings,no one screaming or arguing.
