It's on in about an hour's time. Thought I'd make a discussion thread for it. www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/entertainment/2020-12-01/smtv-live-special-air-date/I have to admit, at the time I didn't have much time for SMTV: Live or Saturday mornings in general, I got SKY in early 1999 at the height of the show's fame and was more consumed with WWF, Fox Kids, Cartoon Network etc. I wound up watching older clips of the show on Youtube and kicked myself for missing out on all that mania.

It was a show that really benefitted from the Pokémon craze as they got a lot of mileage from different sketches, gags and other things while everyone was watching it thanks to the anime. Took the ball and ran with it.

Took the ball and ran with it. I’d say it also benefited from the fact the BBC dominated for years and didn’t really have a counter for it after Live and Kicking ended because it stood itself out that much. Like, you have to remember how much of a giant that was and how much came after it wasn’t nearly as memorable. Does anyone remember Fully Booked? Because I feel like I’m the only one who does and there’s a good reason for that.

I recall it couldn't really compete with SM:TV in terms of the personalities and the like on it. Felt a lot more straitlaced in comparison.

Live & Kicking kicked SMTV's butt when it started, largely in part to Jaime Theakston and Zoe Ball still hosting it.
The tide turned more or less when they left and were replaced by hosts who lacked any chemistry or real personality, allowing Ant, Dec and Cat, who had that in bucketloads, to easily take the lead.
I remember Fully Booked, at least the version based in the hotel. Less so the two revamps that came later. I only watched it for X-Men.

I also remember Fully Booked. That is to say I remember the title and that it existed, but nothing else.
I think I forgot about Live & Kicking with the advent of SMTV, which just seemed a lot more anarchic and fun. I assume these programmes have completely died out now, which is a shame because they were far more memorable than most of the programmes included in them. I feel a pang of nostalgia for CD:UK immediately afterwards too. I think I just miss pop music television in general, even though I have zero interest in most of the music that was on it I think I enjoyed it existing more than it not existing.

I was the same way with CD:UK. Like, I’m not a massive Top of the Pops guy but it weirdly felt like a more evolved version where it felt like THE place you wanted to be in as a kid even though most of it was camera tricks. Like, I know all the acts weren’t there at once but wasn’t it kind of cool to think it was like an abridged music festival and they were?

I assume these programmes have completely died out now BBC and ITV are sort of trying it again now with Scrambled (ITV) and Saturday Mash-Up (CBBC), but Scrambled doesn't really have a studio audience and is more just fun and games with the presenters with stuff kids send in like videos and artwork. Saturday Mash-Up on the other hand did have an audience and interactivity, but all the good hosts left it in the third series and the pandemic hit and the rest of the series had to be filmed in lockdown.

Watched this morning. What a great recap that was. Chums and Wonky Donkey were entertaining enough, but I was all about that Poke-rap.

Right, that era was probably the last time pop music really felt fun.
Pop music and television went hand-in-hand for years and they both sort of underpinned pop culture. Us millennials are probably the last generation to experience pop music on television, and it's sad that no one will ever experience another Bowie on TOTP or Nirvana on The Word where everything changed. Not that we really had those either, or that CD:UK had those generation-defining performances, but still.

For those who missed it, and as stated in the OP, it's repeated tonight on ITV, 8PM.

Always liked what I saw, well Chums at least. However you had Smackdown and soccer am at the same time so didn't see it much.
Glad to hear there's some other similar shows for the kids, though that it was all cooking and similar. (Soccer AM is still on but it's nothing like it once was)
