Well-deserved, but it's pretty funny that Adam Cole having the belt for the entire first half of the year and going undefeated on Takeovers apparently doesn't count for anything.

I think its mainly because the second half of his reign completely fell off a cliff, both promo and match wise. Doesn't help that he was saddled with Velveteen Dream for a couple of months as well, and didn't have a single good match during that entire feud (although that's more on Dream than Cole).

When you see something like this, it’s nice to look back at the progress that the women have made in the company in the past decade.
Ten years ago, the women’s season of NXT was the first one they decided to openly mock on TV. The women’s match at Wrestlemania went a little over 3 minutes (which was still better than the previous year when a man won the Miss Wrestlemania title). While a few wrestlers snuck in here and there, the main hiring process was to get very attractive women with no experience and try to train them from scratch.
To go from that, to Io Shirai winning the NXT competitor of the year...pretty cool.

Honestly no one else was even close. This was Io's year.

Io was also my pick, but it really tells you how good NXT is when they could've given it to Cole, Finn, or Lee and I wouldn't have complained.

Io Shirai joins Asuka (2017) and Kairi Sane (2018) as the other women achieving this feat.
