So, maybe I’m biased because I grew up in Manitoba so it was AWA until WWF pinched them out. So I always heard dad talking about Nick Bockwinkel, but I’m watching Bockwinkel and Heenan promos on YouTube, and without even factoring in that Bockwinkel was awesome in the ring that dude could sell an icebox to and Eskimo with his promos (okay, that is a horribly inappropriate thing for me to say but I can’t think of a current reference that makes the same point)

He definitely kept the AWA afloat for many years.

And despite his age, he was still smooth as butter in ring until the end. He had an excellent fifteen minute match at (i believe) Slamboree '94 against Dory Jr.

I’ve always wondered why Nick Bockwinkle was not used as a mouthpiece, to be paired with guys who are tremendous talents in the ring but leads than stellar on the mic. Imagine for example, a Cesaro singles run with Bockwinkle doing the talking for him. Bockwinkle could certainly cut a promo in one take, and go right back to his work in the office.

He was one of this guys who seemed to only be a good promo for himself as a wrestler. He was awful in wcw as a commissioner and he had Alzheimer's his last few years.Nick as a worker & promo in his day was fabulous and one of the only things I like in AWA.

If there's a true link to the days of Buddy Rogers or Lou Thesz, it's through Nick Bockwinkel. Great hair-underappreciated sideburns in the 70s, immaculate clothes, smug, arrogant, gift of gab (my favorite description is Baron von Raschke "...used $10 words he himself didn't know what they meant, but the fans didn't either...") and could be a serious wrestler or just toy with the guy. Love those jobber matches he'd have. Do a move, play to the crowd. Do another, 10 push-ups. Body language like: "Come on, really? Kenny Jay? I'm gonna bust my ass for this clown?"

I loved the way he did Irish Whips, made a ridiculous phony arse move look convincing.

I'd love to see someone really take the Bockwinkel gimmick into the modern day. Yes, there was SRS Jericho like 12 years ago but for me personally, there's something about Bockwinkel's cadence that Jericho simply lacked.

I thought he had some fantastic matches in the 80s and couldn't believe that he was in his 50s during that time period.

He was one of the best I’ve ever seen. Had every bit the talent Flair, I actually prefer bockwinkle. In the ring he was amazing. His matches with Henning was all time greats.

Yes, there was SRS Jericho like 12 years ago but for me personally, there's something about Bockwinkel's cadence that Jericho simply lacked. Careful with your wording, Chris Jericho may take to twitter and try to troll you because ultimately he lacks the talent that your 1970s, 80s and 90s heels had and has to troll fans to get attention. Jericho lacks a LOT of what those guys had but because so many fans of this era enjoy what he does and considers it to be talent, he is able to troll fans on internet and he's remained popular. He's just one step below the Jim Who Shall Not be Named on the wrestling troll list. I was a fan of Chris 20 years ago but at 50 years old and acting like a child, sorry but I'm not a fan anymore. As for Nick, my first introduction to him was 1994 in WCW. I hate to say but I was a Hulk fan then so I hated when Nick told Hulk he couldn't compete at the end of the August Clash because the masked man had injured his leg. I can't remember how long he lasted in WCW but it's not like WCW at the time really gave him much to work with. Nick inside and outside of wrestling was well above the Dungeon of Doom silly gimmicks or the Saturday Night jobbers. He was also above the crap WWF was putting out at the time. I think Nick would have been a much better on screen president than Jack Tunney in the late 80s or early 90s.

Heenan said that in real life Nick rambled & droned on in simple conversation. If you asked Nick what time it was he’d spend the next 30 minutes telling you how to make a clock and when he was done you still had no idea what time it was.Its kinda amazing Nick was as good of a promo guy as he was.
When Nick retired in 87 he went to wwf and they made him an announcer because he was revered as a great talker.Nick was terrible as an announcer. WCW hired Nick as a commish and he was bad at that too.He made Jack Tunney seem like The Rock.

Love nick bockwinkel. It’s a shame that while gets recognition he IMO doesn’t get the acknowledgment he should get. He looked the part with the clothed and the belt held in his hand so it was seen by all. He was superb in the ring as has been said. People should go find his matches with lawler in Memphis as they are great and also find the “500 dollars a punch promo” which I wonder how lawler felt about some of the things nick said.

Nick was great as a wrestler and wrestling promo. As WCW Commissioner, the dude just rambled every time he was on the mic. You could see Mean Gene trying to keep him on point.

There’s an OSW episode where Nick has to announce Hogan vs Vader, and he makes a pigs ear of it. The boys ripped him to shreds

One of the great missed opportunities in OSW history! Think of the possible HoF entrance speech!

As someone who definitely didn’t need a mouthpiece, it’s really something to think that pairing him and Bobby Heenan was so incredibly perfect.

He also won on an episode of Hollywood Squares, one of the squares even coincidentally was occupied by grandfather of a future WCW champion in Cliff Arquette.
