I'm pretty much of the opinion that the last two Godzilla movies were boring as hell outside of the 20 minutes of actual fighting and Bryan Cranston carrying the first third of the Gareth Edwards movie on his back. Not to mention Adam wingard's last two movies don't inspire confidence. But God damn if I didn't smile when they started fighting on that aircraft carrier.

I agree apart from the monster mash the movies are boring when we have to shift focus on the who cares human subplot...instead of going to a monster movie for ya know the monsters. It is why Shin Godzilla bored me to f***ing tears because it was far less a Godzilla movie and instead a political movie that just happens to have Godzilla in it.

Is that the Super X over Kong's shoulder when he touches the hand print? I also have to disagree with all the people complaining about the human parts when they carry all but the worst of the classic Godzilla movies. The 90s ones are basically garbage just because they are so weak on all the human characters. Though in these latest one's the people (who are pretty flat characters in these) don't really have much to do but look on in wonder for the most part so it has been a chore so I can see why people would want to skip them - but they should really just do a better job with them instead of throwing them out the window. I hope they have struck that balance, so as always I am optimistic! Zilla ‘98 having really lame human characters and not having a second kaiju for a fight really hurt it tremendously. Suffering my dad through this pile of misery at 11 has been one of my biggest regrets in life, lol

Most of every Godzilla movie is about a bunch of boring human characters no one cares about, and 20 good minutes of monster fighting.

Shin Godzilla is probably the best that's been handled since the original: Godzilla was a problem that drove the plot, and a stand-in for a real world phenomenon/danger that human beings have to respond to.

Godzilla's entire existence was political. 1945. The United States drops two nuclear bombs on Japan. The Japanese people live in fear of what the outcome of the radiation of said bombs. Trying to live a life in the fallout of war. 1954. Godzilla is made with those bombings as a backdrop. Godzilla's very creation was the radiation of the bombs the US dropped on Japan. It was used as a metaphor for a post-war Japan. To ignore the political origins of the character is silly.

I didn't care for it, but people love Shin Godzilla and they also love the original's story. Also, before King of the Monsters, Michael Dougherty wrote and directed Krampus, a monster movie with good human characters.

To my surprise I found myself genuinely enjoying Skull Island. But yeah, Godzilla and King of the Monsters, while neither were bad, neither really did anything for me either. I'm pretty ambivalent about this movie.

It doesn't have to be though. I mean, it kind of does. Like, unless you want to give Godzilla a personality and bigger backstory of some kind which if you did, you’d probably take away some of the coolness of Godzilla in the first place.

i like the trailer, as long as that awful song with the dude from System of a down isn't anywhere near this film i'll be happy.
also are we sure its Mechagodzilla and not Jet Jaguar?

Like, unless you want to give Godzilla a personality and bigger backstory of some kind which if you did, you’d probably take away some of the coolness of Godzilla in the first place. The problem with the American ones, of the last few years, is the human story around it sucks ass. Closest it got to being good was Cranstons fleeting part and Skull Island and even the latter felt average. I’ve heard of Shin Godzilla’s great human story, and I believe that’s the right approach with these films (political or not, telling a great human story around it) but I don’t necessarily blame studios for being wary how modern/US audiences will receive that. “They want the CGI fight-fest. But that can’t be the whole film, so let’s throw in some serviceable human characters..” So then the whole thing feels meddled and watered down.
