I'm watching RedLetterMedia's Terminator: Dark Fate review, and I can't help but think after six films there is really nowhere you can go with this franchise. They tried a simple continuation of the franchise with Rise of the Machines, a gritty take during the war with Terminator: Salvation, a soft reboot with Terminator Genisys, then a female-centered reboot similar to the recent Halloween with Terminator: Dark Fate.
You know there is some business executive in Hollywood trying to figure out what to do this franchise. So what would you do with it FAN? So far I've thought of three possibilities: 1) You again attempt a story about the resistance vs Skynet 2) Put terminator in a versus movie (Terminator vs Robocop, vs Alien, vs Predator), or 3) just kill it because the idea of all these terminators that keep going back in time is ridiculous.
What do you think?

Short answer: Never. Leave it alone for good. Part 3 killed it for me.
A crazier idea: an alternate story where John still dies and Sarah goes off depressed just drinking and frequenting casinos while pining for the robots to kill off humanity, which has gotten worse. Think Falling Down/God Bless America, humanity had gotten rotten and Sarah is alone, loveless and drunk the only person close to her is Dyson’s son and his family. Then one day more terminators arrive and they want to kill someone else, a worker at Skynet and they attack any human that is rude D-Fens style but this time they explain why: humans got worse in the future and they see them as evil cruel beings and they tell Sarah after the humans beat them in the future war, humans killed their own leader and went back to their rotten ways. So Sarah is now in a horrible moral dilemma if she should stop them or not.

Ever see Old Yeller?
But if they must continue the series, maybe leave the Conner family alone for a while and explore other facets of the Terminator universe. Maybe show them using their time travel capabilities for something other than killing the Conners. Maybe do some more films set in the future like Salvation. Maybe explore the timeline even further and show up what happens 100 years after John Conner's resistance movement or something like that.

A Terminator is sent back to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor. But he goes after the wrong one.
Edit: A cop investigates a serial killer targeting women named Sarah Connor.
Alternatively, Skynet doesn't just go after the Connors, but other key figures in the resistance as well. Do a film/s about Terminators chasing those people.

So basically expanding the first 30 minutes of both T1 and T3 into feature-length movies.
But to give my own answer... What I'd do is just a straightforward remake of the first movie, but as more of a horror movie than sci-fi/action. Basically do it like It Follows but the monster is a killer robot from the future.

Go back in time and stop making sequels after part 2.
Part 3 was actually OK.

Terminator 3 was meh/okay. I liked Terminator Salvation and I loved The Sarah Connor chronicles, did not care for genesys and hated Dark Fate. I would have loved if they continued with Salvation AND TSCC. But hey had to make things worse by rebooting it with Genesys ... and made it even more worse by rebooting it again with Dark Fate. I have currently no faith in the Terminator franchise and I think it should stay dead / termimnated. I would love to see them go back and make sequels to Salvation, doing a "clean sweep" and go back in the timeline like Halloween 2018 did. But I doubt they are going to do it. They won´t get Christian Bale back. And for some reason the studios will not make Terminator movies without Arnold Scharzenegger. I know he is the "poster face" for the franchise, but I also think that having him back after Salvation creativly killed the franchise. Why the hell do all the T 800´s need to look like him? It makes no sense for an infiltrator. The franchise was running around in circles with the "good guy and bad guy travel back in time to protect/kill someone" story all the time.

Easy. By getting better writers and directors. The problem wasn't the premises. It was the people making them. I liked the ideas for Salvation and Dark fate, but they were made into terrible movies.

I really enjoyed Dark Fate, Genisys was shite, Salvation was shite, 3 was shite.
Stop making them, is my answer.

I feel like the only possible way you could make a dime off this series at this point is to wait 20 years and reboot it completely from scratch. For the time being and in its current incarnation it's a dead property.

The entire franchise has been screwed since the second movie. The first was a perfect time travel movie. A time loop. Skynet sends a Terminator to kill Sarah Conner before she can give birth to John, but creates John and itself in the process. Anything after that just screws it up IMO.
Second movie was amazing effects and action wise. Loved the spectacle. The story could have worked if you left out the happy ending. Should have ended with the revelation that Skynet was already being built and was given more responsibility due to the terrorist attack. Sarah and John go into hiding when it is activated to prepare for the furture. Time loop preserved.
And future projects could be war movies or alternate universes.

If they insist on doing another one (and you know they will it's just a matter of when) I would do a "multiverse" one. You have some storyline that all the time travel has created parallel timelines and destroyed the fabric of the universe and shit. To save it you get old lady Sara Conner from Dark Fate, Christian Bale as Salvation John Conner, Emilia Clarke as Genysis Sara Conner. And the bad guy could be the evil Genysis John Conner. Part of the story is that it explains who sent the Terminator to Sara Conner when she was a kid in Genysis, why the Terminators seem inevitable no matter how hard they try to stop them in various timelines, etc.
We also meet the man the T-800 model is based off of: An old retired soldier named Dutch.

Sometimes a movie about killer future robots being sent back in time by an AI bent on killing humanity is just a movie about killer future robots being sent back in time by an AI bent on killing humanity.
If there is another good story to tell in that plotline, then try to tell the good story. Don't just make shit happen because "we need more". I feel like the latter describes most of the Terminator movies.

A few things are vastly understated in the franchise and losing them makes future movies lacklustre even with good direction and story -
A) Arnold Schwarzenegger's physique - the Terminator character in the first two movies was the most imposing figure in the movies. Aged Arnold looking smaller than Kyle Reese (Genesys) takes away from it - the menace and aura.
I know a terminator is meant to be an infiltrator but a smaller, shapeshifting model like the T1000 is better for that.
B) The lack of the Brad Fiedel score takes so much out of the the movies it's crazy. Like the metallic tongs whenever the Terminator shows up added so much vibrant atmosphere.
Rambo:Last Blood was comparably shite much like latter Terminator movies but used cues from the franchise soundtrack and effects so at least it "felt" like a Rambo movie.
C) The blue camera tint on the first movies - add so much to the atmosphere. I think they went for natural or yellow filter in T3 but God knows what in the other three.

Just stick with the first two. Anything that followed just tarnished it.

I wanted to like Dark Fate, but the music (and robots with octopus tentacles) really made me forget I was even watching a terminator movie at times. The score was an amazing part of the 1st movie

To me the only thing left to do is put the franchise to bed with one last movie and you can go two ways.
An alternate sequel to T2 where thanks to the Connors' efforts a more limited Judgment Day happens. The robots never rise but there are very select nuclear strikes, thus the US devastated but not under the control of the Machines. The movie is then a Logan esque drama where a John and an ill Sarah are travelling across the country where both are struggling with the world they're in. She's facing the prospect of her mortality and the potential grief that Kyle Reese may have never been born from their actions, while he's at a loss to know his place when its neither a full peace he can settle in nor a war he can lead. With a few basic drones being utilized by the fledgling government to patrol parts of the US and keep order, it seems they can no more entirely escape the machines than they can their own emotional difficulties.
The alternative is a sequel that pulls a Gremlins 2; a completely wacky parody of the entire franchise, making fun of all the plot holes and with various John Connor actors running into each other all while various Arnold Terminators fight other versions before battling each other.
