I'm re-watching Die Hard 2, and despite the fact John McClane saved the day only a year ago, the authorities still don't believe anything he says. To the point they just ignore obvious signs something is wrong until it's too late.
Seriously, why would you not believe John McClane? He's an ass, but everyone knows he's been right.
Same with Fox Mulder, and especially Jack Bauer.
"Sure Jack, you've been right 100% of the time in the past, but not this time!"

I have not seen Die Hard 2 but are any of the authorities the same guys from 1? If not then would they really have any reason to even know who he is without him explaining it to them? And if he did explain then wouldn't they have some trouble believing this kind of thing could happen to him twice?

Having rewatched the X-Files recently, pretty much every case Mulder and Scully investigated ended up with a lack of tangible evidence and mostly only their words to go off. And as most of the superiors in the FBI didnt believe in that stuff (or were part of the conspiracy) they really had no reason to accept Mulder's latest wacky story.
An example of the trope I can think of is in the episode of Buffy where she suspects her college roommate is a demon, but EVERYONE dismisses it as Buffy just not liking her and not being able to deal with sharing her space with someone else. You'd think she'd have built up enough credit as a slayer that they'd give her a little bit of support and at least do some sort of cursory investigation.

That's like Harry Potter's life in a nutshell. He saves everyone in the school each year, yet after he returns for the newest year, everyone treats him like an asshole again.

She was acting a little unhinged from the soul stealing but they still dismissed her too easily. That was one thing they did well on Monk. After awhile when Monk would begin investigating someone with a seemingly airtight alibi like being in space or a coma, the Captain would not doubt Monk. He would just tell Monk to get him the proof.

Do Hallmark Channel Murder Mystery's count? My wife is watching this series and it's like the 15th movie with this baker that likes to solve murders, and 75% of every movie is "Ha ha you dumb baker woman get out of my crime scene *80 minutes later* Congrats on solving your 19th crazy murder in the last 2 years in this town of about 1200 people."

It isn't just an action trope... I've been watching the 50s/60s Perry Mason series and the police NEVER stop to consider that Mason might be right.

tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ArbitrarySkepticismI watched one episode of Ben 10. Ben swears he saw a swamp monster or something like that & nobody believes him, not even the grandpa who knows he can turn into different aliens & is a former MiB agent. Didn't watch again.

And if he did explain then wouldn't they have some trouble believing this kind of thing could happen to him twice? I think it's hinted at that McClane didn't cash in on his 15 minutes of fame. Like people know about Nakatomi, but since McClane didn't hit the talk show circuit or anything like that, he's not as well known as the events that took place. Once they realise who he is they take him a little more seriously, but more of a sense of "Okay, you're not a deranged lunatic, but you're still an asshole off-duty L.A. cop several thousand miles outside of your jurisdiction stepping on our toes trying to tell us what to do."

The cops at the airport didn't like this hotshot cop from another city telling them what to do. That's why they didn't believe him.

It's better than Indiana Jones refusing to believe about magic... despite constantly seeing magic...

It's really tough sometimes to put that out of your mind and it is rampant in TV series. Ok, so we have this world renowned doctor who everyone goes to when they can't get a diagnosis and is a huge reason that our hospital gets the funding it does (House). Like I am ever going to get in the way of his methods.
