Just a random sports topic for those who wear jerseys and get them. Maybe I should make it a poll but whatever. What are your thoughts about on this. Do you think its ok to use a players retired number on customs Jerseys if the number represents something else? Example:
lets say your a Demotion Oilers fan. You wanted a Jersey with your name on it and the number 99 was lets set the year you got married or the year you first ever went to a game or graduated from school. Would you still get the said number known it retired because of an all time great? Or a lower number that could been a birthday or whatever.
Just random thoughts and just kind want to know what people stands on it are. I know these trends are seem more in the NHL and MLB, that the NBA and NFL. That Ive seen, not saying they don't. I feel mixed about it. Just wondering what others think.

Na, imo once a number is officially retired it is out of the question in being used
You got to get creative if a number you want is used. Robinson Cano wanted 42 to honor Jackie Robinson but he came in after the number was retired (and Mariano was using it) so he went with 24 instead
On the flip side, i'm more surprised teams haven't adopted a certain number for best player. In Japan the Ace of the staff wears number 18 which is why a lot of Japanese players come over wanting that number. Don't the Cowboys issue a number to a WR in the NFL or I could be mistaken?

Understandable. Just wondering more as in the pass as I went to Blues and Cardinals games in St. Louis Ive seen retired numbers but they have there name or something else. Had me thinking. Why I've been mixed because one hand you respect the players who wore it and it was retired for a reason. The other hand I get if numbers fit into something meaningful and may been hard to get around it. Why I ask the questions.

If it's a fan's custom jersey. whatever. If anything, it tells me that the person is a fan of the player in question. Like, a fan wearing an Oilers Jersey with their last name and 99 tells me they're a big Gretzky fan.

I think there is a line you could pass tho You can ideally ask a player if it is okay to bring their number out of retirement and i'm sure some would be cool with it but teams want to be able sell those retired jersey numbers at a premium price. Can't also discount that the retired number is also significant Tho ultimately, I think players would rather just change their number than ask for permission to wear a retired number. Miami technically has Jordan number retired so LeBron switched to number 6 during his time in Miami

Billy Cunningham let him wear it in tribute to Magic Johnson.
