Its weird to explain, but it kinda went full circle where female personalities ,in some cases, use it for their fanbases,if they are the punk time. You knwo how Itoh`s is full of degeneracy, foul words ,self-loathing humor? It is the same way with being called a simp by her. They identify with the degeneracy and dirty ,self-loathing humor and embrace the joke. Simp is just a way to say someone who is too overly devoted to someone, most of the time not getting any sort of affection in return. Basically overbearing fanboys. Yeh I`m explaining why in this case people enjoy being called that.Maybe I should have explained the original meaning too

I find it funny that some people are saying Maki won't get over in America because people are unfamiliar with japanese idol culture. They don't have to be familiar with it. you just have to describe the bare basics of Maki being fired from a pop group she was a part of. And so many idol aspects are so similar to wrestling, that they'll easily convert to wrestling fans taste. Maki saying who's the cutest in the world already sounds like something a wrestler would say. If anything , I think she might introduce a lot of wrestling fans out of japan to idol culture. They could never mention she's an ex idol and she'll get over. She has enough charisma, character and sense of humor to be HUGE in the US without one person knowing what idol culture is. And it's not like we have a show called American Idol or anything, or Blackpink and BTS didn't have top 10 hits on the charts this year. You're 100% right that the concept of being fired from a pop group will make sense to almost anyone watching TV. Anyone who says otherwise is grasping at straws. And that charisma/humor is apparent with just her body language. For the same reason I think Hana Kimura would have been huge in america, Maki being able to tell a story with just her movement would really bypass problems with english. When I think about, thats kind of similar to how Undertaker got over at first without doing promos.

Right, neither Hana nor Maki are/were the best "pure" wrestlers of this generation of joshi, but their physical storytelling, expressiveness, etc...man, it's heartbreaking to think about now, but Itoh AND Kimura coming over to America at some point could've hit heights that really put joshi wrestling on the American wrestling map for those very reasons, their ability to transcend the language barrier.

I think if Hana Kimura ever wanted to go stateside, she could've been a star. Breaks my heart that she had such a bright future ahead of her only for it to get cut so tragically short by scumbag vultures.

By all accounts she was working hard at learning English any chance she got; who knows if things would've changed if the Bushiroad purchase happened a little earlier for Stardom, but her goal pretty clearly seemed to be to get to the States.

Can anyone tell me what a simp is? I have seen it used in a derogatory manner and don't understand how it's "cute" when Maki Itoh uses it.

I know others have answered here, but just wanted to add this: it's a shortened form of the word 'simpleton,' someone who lacks common sense. In its particular usage nowadays, it tends to be focused towards people who are over-valuing and over-admiring someone or something. Think obsessive fan who has been charmed to the point they don't care what the person does (having a simple mind).

I had never heard the term "simp" until recent years but from what I've seen I always thought it was usually describing a guy who is so obsessed/attracted to a girl that they will shower them with over the top praise and ignore all of their faults in the hope that they will eventually receive attention from the person.
It's actually kind of genius for a character to call her fans that you just have to hope she doesn't attract the type of creepy fans that would take things too far like we've seen recently with Sonya Deville and Alexa Bliss.

The thing to know about "simp" is that it got banned on Twitch over a lot of racial, gendered, and sexual slurs. It's a truly horrible word based just on that!

"Simp" got banned because Twitch gets a cut of donations from "simps" who tip the camgirls who frequent that site. Don't think for a minute that Jeff Bezos and company are being "woke" at all for banning that term. They want money.

When she arrives in AEW, I think they should move past her loveable loser gimmick. But if they decide to keep going with it, they could make it look like Maki couldn't cut it in Japan, so she went to America. The Dark Order could help her in climbing out of a losing streak.

That Lady's Charisma was AMAZING I was already a Itoh fan, and I agree, Ryo had crazy charisma. I hope they sign everybody from the Japanese bracket.

Reports are Ryo is moving to the US soon, for a full time AEW career. Easier schedule benefits for her, at 32 she's still in her prime but is a like 16 year veteran because of how young Joshi can start, but I agree, she is absolutely the one I am seeing win the Japan side, because it might just coincide with her move. She is also one of Kenny Omega's favorite wrestlers, period, and if you watch her mannerisms in ring, he absolutely got some of his stuff from her.

Simp got banned, even if not hatespeech, because it was getting used by a lot of abusive trolls in insulting ways and was deemed a word that was causing too many problems. It wasn't about trying to spare the feelings of all the poor souls offended by being called simps, it had just legitimately become an avenue through which trolls were trolling.
