I just have to say that Brooklyn in the Hole might be the best wrestling entrance theme ever. AEW really needs to lock Maki up, she's a can't miss star, and she'd fit in with the overall aesthetic (with BTE and gaming streams and everything else) better than almost any free agent wrestler I can think of.

Maki Itoh being called a free agent is mind boggling to me.

Maki Itoh being called a free agent is mind boggling to me. Free agent in the strictest sense of the word as applied to the wrestling context. As in, able to sign with any promotion.

I would be very surprised to find out Maki Itoh was not contracted to CyberAgent's Cyberfight division in some manner.

According to wiki, she's a freelancer. I'm guessing either AEW doesn't want to hire her just yet or she wants to wait for the pandemic to be over instead of outright moving to America. Of course she probably still has several commitments to show dates before anything happens.

Maki is signed with a talent agency, Jobnet, in particular their entertainment division IQ Project, with TJPW listed as her assigned company/place of loan. I would guess she has some sort of deal with Cyberfight that isn't publicized, though.

I really hope she doesn't have some draconian contract with that agency, that would complicate things if Aew wanted to sign her.

The desire seems to be there for both sides. Just a matter of the logistics coming together and travel becoming easier.

As I said if any Joshi fully commits to AEW I see it being Maki Itoh, while the likes of Emi, Mei, and VENY could be on the sorta deal Yuka is post-pandemic restrictions and work AEW and Japan at their own free will.
Itoh's just a lightening in a bottle kind of talent. She will be one of the most popular stars of the company if she becomes official.

The way it is: Ryo was who management wanted. Maki is who the fans wanted. There is overlap between the two groups, but primarily the way it went during this recent time.

Did the vast majority of AEW fans know they wanted Itoh-chan before her first [assumedly taped] match? As a US fan, I only knew Aja and Yuka prior to watching all the tourney on YouTube. But - much like the Dark Order - I was instantly won over by Maki. Also it seems Kenny and TK have a plan going forward to get her to AEW in 2021 with crowds.

I think there’s also the sheer fact that Ryo appears primed to be willing to commit full time to working in the States, or at least closer to full time. Made sense to use this as a way to introduce her as a singles force.

Hard to beat a cute girl who curses like a sailor. Also Maki-chan has an excellent English social media game. She's got the same thing that Orange Cassidy and Danhausen do. It's stuff that may not please the Jim Cornette types, but if you got it you are beloved by us hardcores.

Yeah, but Jim hates us hardcore fans too (he's always calling us "basement-dwelling marks" and "sissies") which makes me love Maki successfully trolling him on Social Media even more.
