Specifically, I mean...how did we learn that Mimsie died just after St. Elsewhere's series finale?
(Which of course is something people who are disturbed by the original version of said finale's end credits give as a reason for...being disturbed by it.)

It was in the end credits of St. Elsewhere. instead of the usual ending with the cat they had the Cat on a heart monitor that ends with it flat lining.

My point exactly. As I said, Mimsie dying is one of many reasons why so many people are disturbed by this logo (which I think is unofficially banned from TV anyway. No reruns of the finale has it, even on Hulu).
But...could it be those credits that made people think Mimsie died in 1988?
There was also an old news article about a girl who watched St. Elsewhere and was saddened by her parents telling her the cat was probably dead by now.

Wikipedia says the idea for the cat dying in the logo was because the series was ending. At the end of every other episode, the cat was wearing surgical scrubs. The item that the cat had died in 1988 was included in the news story when Grant Tinker died in 2017, he was one of the founders of MTM Enterprises and Mary Tyler Moore's ex-husband (they were married when they formed the company, divorced in 1981).

Indeed it was. But as you see above, it took a life of its own nonetheless.
