Would anyone like it if the big 4 commissioners had a max of two terms as commissioner of their sport. The have to win a reelection to get their second term as well. Some people say some commissioners are stale beyond belief and change is good.
Would you be down for this in the NHL, NBA, MLB and NFL?

interesting idea, but I think it would end up overcomplicating things and disrupting league stability.

With Bettman hanging on like grim death in the NHL, it can only be a positive for that sport at least.

Commissioners are mostly just sock puppets for the owners. So if they're satisfied with the guy, why would they want to be forced to get rid of him?

Getting rid of a good commissioner just because of an arbitrary time limit would hurt much more than it would help.
Plus, like what's been said, the Commissioner gets way to much "blame" and "praise". It's literally their job to do what the owners tell them. The Commissioners get paid a lot of money to absorb Bad PR that the owners don't want sticking to them.
A commissioner honestly only really has power on day to day operations. Anything "large" goes thru the filter of the owners.

With Bettman hanging on like grim death in the NHL, it can only be a positive for that sport at least. Honestly, as a Canadian I’ve give Bettman worlds of shit over the past 28 years but NHL as we know it would not be around without him. |

Sports leagues aren't democratic governments. Term limits aren't necessary, especially when the commissioners serve at the pleasure of the team owners. If the guy sucks, they can appoint someone else. But why ruin a good thing?

Regarding Bettman.... I don't even remember who was commissioner before him. That's how long he's been there. He's been the only Commissioner in NHL history. Before 1993 the League's top executive was a President. |
