I finally got around to watching Revolution and about halfway during the main event I realised that AEW kinda sucks at blood and guts.
Not to say that they can't deliver on violence at all, there's been plenty of AEW matches that surprised the hell out of me with how brutal they got, but I feel like every single time AEW sells a match primarily on how violent and crazy it's gonna be, they never live up to it.
Moxley vs Omega Lights Out was a decent 8 minute match hidden at the end of a 30 minute slog. The Hardy vs Guevara trilogy was so cursed that they had to pivot it around into whacky Broken Matt Hardy comedy to salvage it for the blow-off.
The dog collar match was ruined by the absolutely terrible psychology and Cody in general doesn't seem to be capable of anything more than middle of the road WWE matches with some blood, cause the cage match with Wardlow was pretty forgettable as well. And I don't think anything else needs to be said about the "exploding" barbed wire death match. Even before the dud finish (pun kinda intended) the blasts during the match looked so laughable I actually got TNA electrified cage flashbacks.
Does anyone else feel this way or am I overreacting here?

The fact you insulted the dog collar match, one of my favorite matches in wrestling history, just makes me feel this thread is way off. Hardy had a bad bump, the explosion at the end sucked. Not a pattern.
Cody versus Dustin was amazing blood and guts. Best Friends versus Santana and Ortiz street fight was amazing. Bucks versus Butcher and Blade falls count anywhere was one of my favorite matches of the year. Moxley versus Kingston I quit match was brutal and great. I don't know if Stadium Stampede falls into it, but it was a violent gimmick match that brought me utter joy.
People love their meta conversations, but AEW has had a lot more hits versus their few misses.

The Exploding Barbed Wire Death match was great until that post-match dud, and had a ton of great, brutally violent spots mixed with some great psychology. Matt/Guavara I can give you because that shit was cursed, but other brutal matches like Omega/Mox lights out, Bucks vs Butcher and Blade, Mox vs Kingston I Quit, Bunkhouse Brawl, Dog Collar Match? They have more than satisfied me in their brutalness.

The actual match portion of the Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch was brilliance. The effects may have sucked, but the actual psychology and flow of what they did is some world class shit. At least personally, I will forever take a well worked and exciting match with some crappy effects over a match that isn't as good but has better explosions. Maybe it's just that I'm used to watching what we'll call "very flawed" movies where you need to overlook how cheap they are and focus on what's cool about them, but it's never been tough for me to shut my brain off for some things and delve into the brighter spots when the brighter spots are what I'm writing for. Same way cheesy acting won't ruin my enjoyment of a schlock action movie or a slasher.
To me, AEW has more than delivered on violence when they promise it.

It was a technical error so I can't really blame them for that. Personally, I find that type of match boring anyway. The sparklers gave me a good laugh.

Good. I would be happy if bloody hardcore matches died out.

Nope people loved Mox/Omega Lights Out and this match was liked too. You could feel in your person opinion about Lights Out match but it's not universally felt that way. You seem to forget what happen on this show, was AFTER the match. It doesn't change the match at all. Plus like people said Mox/Kingston or Cody/ Brodie dog collar. So basically it happen one time When Matt Hardy had had bad spot and hit his head during a match. Then the post match speculatal here. No offense but this isn't thread worthy. Especially when you are talking about a match that worked(nobody was complaining about those blasts that's how they were suppose to look) and was good for like 27 minutes. It was only when post match angle with explosion didn't work. Go watch Barb wire Death matches. The blast in this match were exactly how they look. Other wise it's not safe for fans or wrestlers. It was just post match blast that didn't work right. Again maybe do some research and know what you are talking about before posting.

They’ve been fine when they get super violent. Right to the point where they need to be. Heck, you can make an argument when Dustin was busted open at DON 2019 that was the most bloody match and that was just a regular match.

All of the unsanctioned matche were really good.
Just the Hardy Match and the explosion were duds
And the dog collat match was one of the better matches of the year

Thought this was legit until the dog collar match complaint. That match was great. I think AEW is doing fine on their violent gimmick matches.

I didn't see this one, but the only ones I can really think of I'd call especially bad are the Matt / Sammy feud and Mox / Kingston, and I know I'm a minority opinion in finding that incredibly goddamn boring.

I think they should just never do another implosion match again. And tell moxley no when he comes up with another complex death match. Just keep it simple they've had far more brutal matches like the cody vs Dustin and that was just a regular match with a bucket of blood streaming out of dustin's forehead

I am totally against the use of real blood in any matches. I think it is barbaric, and I have less issue with people taking advantage of hardway.
I also agree that both the Moxley/Omega matches under delivered.
But other than that... if you are going to use blood, AEW have used it incredibly well in nearly every occasion. It isn't over used, it is used well in angles, they do fake it when the opportunity presents itself, they have created some of their most iconic moments using it.
Also I cannot believe you hated the dog collar match that much. I thought it was a masterpiece.
Also not in your list was the I Quit match, which was really good.

Outside the Hardy/Guevara series, I think AEW's been especially good with all its hardcore-type matches. The Dog Collar match was one of the best matches I saw in 2020, especially since it ended up being Brodie Lee's final match before his death. And quite frankly, I can't even begin to understand saying that it had bad psychology. Even the Exploding Barbed Wire match was fantastic outside of the technical glitch post-match that resulted in hilarity.
So no, definitely don't agree at all.

There was literally not a single flaw with the Dog Collar match other than the fact that it ended.

I firmly disagree with the OP. The only one I can agree on is the Hardy vs Guvera series but thats them not having any chemistry

You always get super defensive about AEW man, you can't just attack someone over having a negative opinion of AEW (besides obvious trolls) it scares off good conversation and debate.

Gotta disagree, aside from the Hardy/Sammy stuff I've loved all of it, even going back to the Moxley/Janella deathmatch.
