I don't think Kenny is bad on the mic at all. He's kind of like Bret Hart in that he's not going to cut an Earth-shattering promo, but he plays his character well enough and gets his point across.

He's looked more like the frontman of an ELO cover band than a Ric Flair Wannabe since his heel turn.

This does make me wonder what a Kenny Omega vs Prime 1985 to 1989 Ric Flair match would be like. Kenny probably runs into Bret Hart's problem with the "Flair formula". Okada has a formula too obviously, but it's far more suited to how Omega wrestles than is Flair's. At best, a pale imitation of a Steamboat-Flair match, at worst absolutely throwaway.

He’s not Flair by any means but I am shocked to think people believe he is not good on the mic. He is really talented on the stick. The dude said “69 me, Don!” for crying out loud.

I probably could have explained myself better. I don't think he's doing a wholesale impersonation of Flair, and he's definitely his own character, but I think he's just doing some subtle nods here and there, and I dig it. That's all.
Carry on.

I recognize Kenny is extremely talented but for some reason I just check out at the prospect of him as a main-eventer. He seems more upper midcard to me.

Not even close.
I really don't see the hype with Kenny Omega I'll be honest.

Most of AEW feels like it's trying to be that era of the NWA/WCW.
What once was old feels somewhat fresh again thanks to decades of monopoly.

I've only seen Flair in the 80s via a few clips but he was seen as actually cool and "the man" right? I've not seen every second of Omega in AEW either tbh but I thought his shtick was that he THINKS he's cool but he's really a dork. That's the vibe I get from him anyway.

I think that's fairly accurate. I think the core difference, the thing that makes Omega distinctive, is that he is obsessed with, well, padding his resume. In some ways, he cares less about his actual victories than he cares about having better stats - bigger numbers, more awards, etc. I suspect that that difference comes from the gamer in him...hence, to use your term, the dork part of him.

Putting my aside my huge bias against Kenny Omega(I know the thread wasn't saying he is on Ric's level, just that there are character similarities) I definitely agree that there seems to be a lot of callbacks to Flair's persona. Whether they are intentional or not.

Flair in the 80s was a villain for the times. All the money, all the women, all the best clothes, cheating to win everything he gets, talking a big game. Today's villain thinks they're amazing, and chases accolades even though they're just a douche with a lot of yes men helping them. I think AEW takes pointers from 80's TBS wrestling. Ric Flair was the bleach blonde heel, able to make people look good wrestler, with a crew to help him out of tough spots, who traveled to other promotions to face their top babyfaces. They're working off the archtype and building it for the times. Omega not being as good on the mic as one of the four best talkers in wrestling history is a given, but Omega is successful in getting people to dislike him enough.

He's a good wrestler, that much is obvious. But he's not as good as Flair in the ring, on the mic, and he will never draw a fraction of what Flair did.
I mean, my mom hates wrestling and knows who Ric Flair is. There's no way your average person has a clue who Kenny Omega is.

I’m begging people to actually watch golden era Flair before comparing anyone to him in terms of character, ring work and believability
