I appreciate lots of older stuff for it's context as the first time X happened in mainstream movies, or how for the societal make up of the time something was more shocking at the point of release than now - many older horror/thriller films fall in this category.
I think maybe Avatar is my pick for this though. Everyone seemed to be so excited to see that thing, then once they saw it, the vast majority were completely underwhelmed, but people kept going to see it because of the technology used in making it.

Borat. Everyone I know quoted the f*** out of it to the point of obnoxiousness. I saw it and thought it was nonsense, and not in a good way. "Well, you must not get the joke then!" Nope. I get it and think it still sucks That is Napoleon Dynamite for me.

The Sixth Sense. Mainly because the twist had been spoiled for me before I watched it. But I can watch it now and appreciate it, but that first watch was tremendously underwhelming.

High Fidelity. It was fine, but I much prefer Empire Records in the Battle Of Movies That Take Place In Record Stores.

The Star Wars prequels didn’t live up to their anti-build for me. Granted I’m not well-versed in the Star Wars universe and will likely never be, but I came into them after years of hearing of how bad they were and my reaction was just like “Okay, these are fine, I guess.”

I thought Avatar was the most bland story ever for a James Cameron flick. If you took away the pretty visuals, there wasn't much substance in it

one from a kid - Fantasia
I remember it was coming out on video and Disney being Disney was saying it would only be available for a short time and go back into the vault, so I asked for it for Christmas... and it just wasn't my thing, but I think that was my first ever disappointment of a film I was looking forward to seeing
I could appreciate it more as an adult though

*Breaks out whip and chair* Star Wars. I've only ever seen the original and that was once. I love space, I love science, and I just don't get it with this movie or the franchise. Probably because Star Wars isn't really a sci-fi film. It's more a fantasy film with a science fiction-ish setting.

I think for some classic films, you have to watch it again to get over the hype and build up. If you don’t like it the first time, if you’re up to it, watch it again when time has past and see if it improves. When I first saw Rocky in high school, it was a good movie but I didn’t think much of it. I knew it was one of my dads all time favorite movies, but it didn’t grab me the first the time. Then I saw it again a few years later and I thought it was tremendous. Now I’m a huge fan of the Rocky franchise.
I think it’s important to try and not watch these movies with any expectations. You still may not like it, but rarely does any movie live up to being called “the greatest movie of all time.” No matter how incredible it is. Sometimes it’s hard to just discover a classic movie on a base level and watch it as it is without feeling there is a huge legacy to it. That’s happened with me and many silent films and movies like 12. Angry Men. Stuff that I happened to catch on cable and now I’m crazy for them.

Can I write Zach (deperately wishes he was Christopher Nolan) Snyder's Justice League without bothering to see it first?

Get Out-Thought the twist at the end was pretty dumb. Mad Max Fury Road-Just overall bored by it Man of Steel-I’d followed this one for years and was pretty hyped. I could immediately tell it was a letdown

Dunkirk
I hate movies where events are shown out of order cutting to and from scenes. Pulp Fiction is one of the few that made it work. Dunkirk made it a confusing mess. Not helped by the fact every character looked alike so I didnt know who was who---an average height white guy in his 20s with brown hair. Throwing a ginger or blonde in would have helped.

Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2
Saw 1 about a year after it hit DVD. Had heard all the hype. Yea that movie wasn't worth a crap. When part 2 came out I wasn't going to watch it. My lady and some friends wanted to see it so they rented it from Redbox. I heard it was much better than the first....nope it was worse.
