I always compare AEW's handling of OC to WWE's handling of Keith Lee.
Both were white hot. Lee going to Raw from NXT and OC winning his feud with Jericho.
Both failed to capitalize on their momentum.
This feud with Miro hasn't done anything for either guy. But to me AEW dropped the ball not capitalizing on OC after the Jericho feud. He should of won the TNT title. For the moment he is just another guy.

They should not have inserted him into the mini feud with Cody since the plan was for Darby to finally get the win. I think that more than anything hurt him the most.

He started as video game guy and has evolved into psycho ready to snap and break his best friend at the drop of a hat. The feud didn't start well but he finally feels like he could start making his way into the main event.

I think not every feud is done to establish somebody as a main eventer. Jericho feuded with Orange to establish him as a versatile member of the roster that can get slotted into legit feuds without too much of an issue.
I still don't think there should ever be a world where OC even sniffs the actual AEW Title, but I could at least see him in the mix for the TNT belt.

OC is just in a cool down periods. He is still very protected I mean, you have to have a cool down period when you contain the power that is One for All. OC has seen what that did to Izuku/Deku, and is just being smart about it.

OC was asked if he wanted a push but decided there would be too much effort involved to move forward after being pushed by someone

This happens more than it needs to. Wrestling companies need to decide that they are putting their trust in someone if they are going to do programs like Jericho-Cassidy. I don’t think Cassidy means much more than he did before that feud at this point. People still love him- but he isn’t getting higher profile spots.

Also, keep in mind that he’s more of a special attraction type guy than a guy you’re going have wrestle every single week and win titles. He really isn’t going to win many titles in AEW, maybe a TNT title, but he’s never going to win the big one. And that’s okay. He has a great gimmick that’s mega over that really doesn’t need to win titles or even win all the time. But he has been established as a guy who you need to take seriously and can beat anyone on any given day. And for that, he’s already a star no matter what happens. That’s just my opinion on it.
I also want to state that just because someone isn’t on the top of the card that somehow they don’t mean anything. While I do agree he did lose momentum towards the end of last year, he has by no means been forgotten or made less special. This isn’t WWE, where for most of the last 20 years the midcard was made to look meaningless. AEW has done a hell of a job building a midcard that actually feels important and exciting.

Like, this'll seem like a weird comparison, but his character is in the same category as The Fiend. He doesn't need to be a title contender because you're then fitting a square peg in a round hole in terms of stories you can tell. The Fiend can be a horror movie character who stalks people he wants revenge against and build interest there and OC can be a guy who hangs on the sidelines until he's called into action for a particular purpose.

I love Orange Cassidy, but even competing for the AEW World Championship feels like it goes against his character. He's one of those guys who doesn't need a championship to be a star. He can just be a perennial mid-upper carder and not lose much of any popularity. All that said, I think it's time for the Best Friends, Miro, and Kip Sabian to all move on to different things.

I kind of like they've held off, there's only so many big first time matches you can do with people, he's a guy who should be doing those in front of full crowds

The thing is, win or lose, as soon as Orange Cassidy starts wrestling normal competitive matches against other wrestlers-- even if they're good matches-- the mystique of his gimmick is gone. He's just another guy. The question of "So how good is Orange if he actually tries to win?" has been answered. Is Orange Cassidy charismatic enough to adapt and continue building his persona from here? Maybe. But beating Jericho in extended matches damaged him almost as much as losing those same matches would've. That's not true at all. He still does his spots in competitive matches, he's one of the better sellers in all of wrestling, just look at the Nemeth match tonight as an example, but more so saying him beating Jericho twice competitively, would have almost done as much damage as him losing three straight to Jericho is an absolutely ridiculous statement imo. Cassidy's still way over, he's still like the top merch guy in the company. Him being in a cool down period doesn't mean his aura is ruined or he's screwed and that to me is way too overblown. He's basically filling a void left by Trent due to a bad injury and filling it well. Miro's found his stride since feuding with him. Moreover they're probably waiting until full crowds are back to really push him, because that's where he shines too. He wraps them all in the palm of his hand. Cassidy's a star, and I feel like it's constantly undervalued just how good he actually is when I see threads and comments like this. He is not a one trick pony and he's proven it time and again, and will continue to. A bit of that aura, for me at least, has dissipated in recent months. Not to say he can’t get it back, but he definitely feels like less of a big deal to me when he appears now.

For the moment he is just another guy. WWE also micromanaged Lee and took things away from him that made him special, gave him weird shorts, a new theme, a fat shirt, and even took away his promo style and delivery. They even took away his work style so bad we had those "Re-train in the PC" reports... Comparing that to Cassidy being in a holdover feud doesn't add up to me. I feel like Cassidy being in bigger feuds with Brodie or Cody were them capitalizing on it, but he didn't win the title yet. Doesn't mean he never will, but even at his most white hot he was losing matches to PAC, and every loss he's had has been protected in some way lately. I think they know what they have in Orange where I don't really know if WWE sees the same in Lee anymore. I think the main crux for Cassidy will be when crowds return.

I had no idea Orange wasn't being used right until this thread. He's lost two matches in 6 months, one after a time limit draw with Cody, and once after being one of the last two in a battle royal. Helped his very close friend and roommate in his feud, replacing his friend who got injured, was featured in an angle on Dynamite, was in one of the 8 matches at the PPV, and was the catalyst for the match happening.
I guess people can call the feud "heatless", but that's an opinion. I also don't understand why he needs to be TNT champion over Darby Allin. That's who the long term booking had winning it, with certain story points going back to April between Cody and Darby. The point of OC beating Jericho was to have a feel good moment, and a face beating the heel in a feud. Should he be the guy who got tricked by Matt Hardy instead of Hangman, even though they've been telling that story for more then a year? Should he replace John Moxley in the feud with Omega? Should he have been the ladder match instead of an angle where he's saving his friend and embarrassing his enemies?
I'm just not sure what spot he's supposed to be in. Sometimes feuds go better or worse then they should, but he's still a top guy in the company.

No, it actually makes sense because I was about to compare him to the early-mid 90's Undertaker right after he'd turned face. Great gimmick that runs the risk of overexposure, definitely should have a championship at some point, but doesn't need one to define himself in the upper-mid to top card. And believe it or not, OC is booked as legit dangerous. He's not a monster in the way that Taker was booked, but more like an unpredictable explosive that you need to deal with and deal with quickly, because once he gets going he's very fast, very agile, and they've booked the Orange Punch like a kill shot. All in all, he'll be just fine, but the problem is that A. You run the risk of overexposure and B. It's really a gimmick that works best with a crowd. Everyone being in on it is part of the magic.

And yet if they worked an arena with a full crowd tomorrow there might be 2 louder pops than his (Hangman & Dark Order would be the only ones I see out popping him.

Not everyone that gets over should be a fixture in the main event. The quickest way to make fans turn on a guy like OC is to overexpose them and put them over continually as the greatest thing since sliced oranges. You're not a slacker underdog if you beat all comers, you're just another dog.
He's shown he can hang in TV main events, he can slot into the top of the card for short feuds and that's fine. We really need to get past the 'world title or worthless' mindset we've been programmed with since the Monday night wars.

He's protected still but this is something I hate with all wrestling companies
You give him a big angle with a big star and don't continue that momentum. Seen that countless times with Cena where he can have a big feud with a young guy. The young guy does nothing as his next feud while the bigger star gets another big name feud and the L they possibly just took doesn't really mean much
Jericho shrugged off that L and went straight to the stuff with MJF and tag titles. OC has just been there as a vehicle to help with Miro. OC didn't get a step up, he just stayed in place if not took a little regression

To me it just feels like they've pushed pause on him for a second until the crowds are back, he's not someone you want to have all of his big moments in front of an empty arena.
