No big deal.
So anyway let's just appreciate the f*** out of this match and these two guys and the fact AEW just has these two guys who can just walk out there and put on bangers with seemingly literally anyone shall we?

That false finish in the last tweet... nanoseconds doesn't even describe how close that was.

That was a fantastic match. I kinda forgot how good Matt Sydal was. That was probably his biggest match he’s had on American TV in a decade and I didn’t really follow him much in the indies and in Japan. But I’m really so glad how well that match turned out.

That false finish in the last tweet... nanoseconds doesn't even describe how close that was. It was honestly one of the closest nearfalls I had ever seen. Like, we had a conversation about the best main event in Dynamite history and I feel this helps start the conversation about the best opener in Dynamite history because that match is up there.

I'm usually not big on the idea of guys looking stronger after a loss but Sydal was made in this match for the AEW audience. Proved he could hang with the world champ and certainly belonged in the ring with him.

It's funny that Kenny Omega looks so much like Brad Armstrong in the 80's, because this match was exactly like Brad Armstrong versus Ric Flair, but Sydal in the Armstrong spot. Flair as the champion who thinks he is too good for the mid-card babyface, and the babyface shows both his skill and his ability to hang with the champion. In actuality, Flair loved wrestling Armstrong, and considered him one of his 5 favorite opponents. I feel that Omega has a huge respect fpr Sydal and that's why the match happened.

Dynamite openers have a really good track record of being bangers.

Thought the beginning-middle of the match was kind of middle of the road, but that false finish with Sydal rolling him up was fantastic. A match like this could have used a real packed arena crowd.

It kinda bothers me that world champion Kenny Omega is jerking the curtain on his own show. I get that they had to get the match out of the way first and have the emotional confrontation with the Bucks later because the confrontation was infinitely more important than the match, but couldn't they have put the Hangman match on the Nightmare Family thing on first?

"Jerking the Curtain" gets some of the highest ratings on the entire show these days, true for all wrestling. The beginning, top of second hour, and main event, are usually where you shoot for viewership spikes, but notably the opening for Dynamite lately has done some of the best numbers, so absolutely made sense to have your champion in an uninterrupted banger.

Yeah I mean this like saying Hogan and Savage were jerking the curtain on SNME. Putting your stars first a viable way to book a wrestling show.
Omega’s closest historical comp is Bret Hart and matches like this just reinforce it.

Yeah, Hogan very often went on first because he wanted to be sure to have eyes on his matches, plus think of how many Raws opened on Triple H promos for much the same reason.
I love that Sydal teased doing the Shooting Star Press. Unless I am missing something, he hasn't hit it even once in AEW, after the debut botch. When he does hit it, it's going to be treated as a big deal, no doubt, even if he's not the only guy who uses the move. Hell, Fuego Del Sol manages to make the tornado DDT feel like a huge deal despite it being a move tons of people in the company do, so I am sure a veteran like Sydal can do so even moreso.
Would not be shocked at all if Sydal gets a match with Darby Allin in the near future after a banger like this.

I feel like knowing there was no way Sydal was going to win took a little away from it for me.

It's different on TV. If this was a PPV, absolutely it'd be completely baffling. But a really exciting match to open the show helps hook people in and get them immediately feeling positive about the show. I think they did a great job of hitting the important, exciting matches on the show at the right points so that they opened, hit the hour boundary, and ended the show. Put Hangman vs. Bononi first and I think it ends up a slightly less enjoyable show for it. That's a calm-down match if I've ever seen one.

I feel like knowing there was no way Sydal was going to win took a little away from it for me. I could buy him maybe getting a count out to get a title shot in a week or two to pump Omega's title defenses up, or frustrated Omega into getting DQ'd, but yeah, I didn't think he was likely going to get a pin. Still, I get where that could keep it from being as good as it could be.

I feel like knowing there was no way Sydal was going to win took a little away from it for me. I felt the same way about the Conti/Nyla match on Dynamite before it happened. I love Tay, and have been following her for months on Dark, where she's constantly shown improvement. I'm glad I watched it because I was rewarded with a surprising outcome. Even if we feel like the outcome is certain, like we both did for different matches, life can pleasantly surprise you sometimes. AEW seems to get that and I really appreciate that about them.

I feel like people underate how important opening the show is. We had another title match and opening the show is the second most important slot of a card
