I debated which section to put this in, and almost put in (W)rest of Wrestling, but last week my Dad passed. He had numerous health challenges over the past 10 years, with an accelerated decline over the past 7 months.
But my intent in posting this isn't to discuss his health but rather to briefly celebrate how he introduced me to both pro wrestling and boxing.
One of my earliest memories is sitting upstairs with my Dad, watching Rocky Johnson and Tony Atlas battle the Wild Samoans for the WWWWF tag team titles. I want to say that Rocky may have broken a wooden chair over the head of Sika to no avail during this match.
Later when Hulkamania was running wild, he talked my Mom (rest her soul) into getting me a subscription to the WWF magazine. This was no small miracle as my Mom found wrestling in her words "vulgar."
Then we started getting NWA in our area over the air TV (as cable was seen at that time as too expensive) so we would watch the villainous exploits of the Four Horsemen and the Midnight Express. Also in the mid 80s, we discovered Bill Watts' UWF and Mid South Power Pro Wrestling which was eye-opening for its violence and action.
One of my jobs was to set the VCR to record hours upon hours of wrestling when he was unable to watch it in real time. I can't count the number of times we had to get new tapes because the old ones wore out.
For us, Saturday afternoon and night was alright for fighting (albeit predetermined, choreographed fighting).
88 years is a hell of a run, Pop.
Hope you've met some of your squared circle heroes on the other side.

As someone who is still trying to figure out everything with the financial situation after my dad's passing (also this year due to COVID), I am sorry to hear about your loss.

Condolences on your loss. Your dad sounds a lot like mine, don't remember him watching wrestling until my brother and I found it randomly. And somewhere in my brother's house are old "junk tapes" of stuff we'd record while he was working. Could be an old SNME, could be an episode of Kate & Allie. The positives outweigh the negatives. Keep your head high. Best to you.
