So a buddy of mine were talking about how screwed we are right now. Our company is bleeding employees and barely any applications are coming in. Just like everywhere else it’s being blamed on unemployment which is a load of crap. Not competing pay and benefits wise are what’s killed us. Everyone’s working downtown where all the tourists and busy bars are. Normally we’re going into off-season now, those restaurants and bars lay seasonal employees off and we restock. Not this year. We’re staying busy because we’re in Florida and a tropical area so we’re still rocking. Easter we had 4 servers and a bartender and another manager taking tables. Less than a third of the staff we’d normally run.
Now apparently my buddy’s area boss up in Tampa has a brilliant solution to all of this. He sent me a picture of the ad and it f***ing incensed me to no end. Let’s advertise restaurant jobs to high school and college kids as internships for the summer! Brilliant! f*** you! Do they really think that shit is gonna work? That students are stupid enough to work kitchen, serving, bartending, togo and delivery driving as f***ing internships and not paid jobs? This is the damn solution instead of making it a better place to work?
f***. Right. Off.

Never be surprised at how low any company, whether they're a local mom and pop or a giant corporation, is willing to sink.

My boss acts like his staff getting 50% off on meals is costing him money. Bullshit. Food at cost is less than what we’re paying for it. Treating employees that work 8-10 hour shifts with no break to eat unless we sneak one in as if we’re not worth lunch. Oh....but it’s ok...we can make up for it by getting two meals at 25% off. I’m one of the few employees left from when the company was privately owned. If employees still got the benefits I do the turnover would be a lot lower and maybe have a better staff. If you even qualify for vaca time/PTO it’s minimum wage and has been since 2008. When I started in 2004 it was average of your hourly and claimed tips...but oh no that might mean people would take time off and shit. Cant have that. Why offer competitive benefits when we can just try to bamboozle students so we can maximize profit.

I was even allowed free Cokes from the bar. I've never worked at one, but from what I understand, even McDonalds gives their workers free meals. MCDONALDS.

who the hell would ever agree to an internship at a f***ing restaurant? To be honest...assistant kitchen manager and front of house manager are two of the “internships” offered. Might be of interest for those getting degrees in hospitality management or going to culinary school. On the flip side of that coin when I was FOH manager (non salary), I made $16 a hour plus a free shift meal. I can only imagine what garbage they’re gonna offer them to work these management shifts

This is the only place I’ve worked that didn’t do free shift meals. When I started there shifts were 4-5 hours so we didn’t really take a break anyways. Paying $5-6 to take a steak and two sides home...nothing to complain about. Problem is our bosses boss decided to cut her stores comp to 25% even if you’re working a shift. Other stores still get 50% off if you’re working that day. I also got the vibe a while back that our boss cares about his own pocket way more than his staff. They gave him the ok to use $500 to do something...anything...for the staff for Christmas. One of the managers told me he didn’t understand why he needed to spend it on us. So he didn’t. Also...the entire management team quit in the past 3-4 months. Half the kitchen too.

That sounds like someone clearly unfit for a leadership role. Especially during a Pandemic! Like, good God, man! Treat your employees to at least something special!

I worked at the worlds worst restraunt for the worlds worst boss for a little over a year no one got free meals, there was some sort of employee discount that came with food you purchased -- I never found out how much because i never bought food there

who the hell would ever agree to an internship at a f***ing restaurant? I'm sure they will get a few dummies.... and then they will be gone after a couple days. It really is a dumb idea..... hell, it could cost him regular employees.

I mean an internship is typically something you do for experience as part of an academic program of some kind, working at something like a law firm or a bank. nobody would agree to do something like that bussing tables. I'm not even sure that's legal.

There does seem to be a strange ethos recently that companies can get by with 'volunteers/internships'.

Forgot to add...the site that had the ad for the “internships”...the pic immediately following it was an advertisement that we need employees and are doing a job fair now. Three days of interviews live and online.
My buddies store had zero applicants. None.

You people in the food and beverage industry have had it too good for too long.
Seriously, I've been out of the industry for almost 15 years aside from a handful of cameos for some friends when needed and I haven't even done that in at least 5 years. I cannot imagine doing that for no pay. The pay was bad enough as it is. That is a big reason I left and why my cameo appearances were all under the table.

I actually was done with the industry after 4 years in and I came back because hourly wasn’t for me. 17 years later I’m still here. When I started there I had a great boss who now works for the corporate office and gives me advice when I need it. The founders are all gone from the company now and we’re publicly traded now. Gotta kiss that stockholder ass now employees be damned. I’m still making great money but I planned on stopping bartending 3 months ago. We have so little staff I couldn’t. I personally think they should go full delivery after I leave because they have no damn staff to run a floor. We’re one of the top delivery stores in the company anyways and Florida is close to passing making (properly sealed) togo alcoholic drinks legal. You damn well know they want to. Less people to pay.
