Considering how things have played out, it's freaking interesting to me how dismissive Dave Meltzer has been towards Bad Bunny. I'm Puerto Rican, I live in the island and Bad Bunny is almost worshipped like a god, with every single thing he does in public being covered and discussed in radio and TV shows and out comes Dave Meltzer and starts doing gymnastics over Bad Bunny's involvement with WWE. At first, Meltzer didn't understand why an artist being big in the 18-to-34 would be showcased in WWE where the average age of TV viewers is supposedly 54 years old, then went on to talk that people within the Latin American community dislike Bad Bunny (which is true) and using that as a way to say that the perception of Bad Bunny's fame is being blown out of proportion and then Meltzer goes on to call him a "B tier celebrity" only big in Latin America... I'm honestly surprised that the local media hasn't caught onto his comments beyond "there are wrestling fans hating on Bad Bunny for not being a wrestler" but here we are with one of the biggest wrestling reporters in the medium, dismissing the contributions of legitimately one of the biggest draws in the world because Dave Meltzer doesn't know who Bad Bunny is...

Dave Meltzer is a dumb, out-of-touch racist?

He's not dumb and I don't believe he's a racist. Out-of-touch, maybe a little, but not as much as some of his detractors would like to think.

Meltzer's always had a very poor way with words where his intention gets lost in the clumsy way he says or writes it. Like his comments about advertisers not caring about Indian viewership numbers on YouTube. He's absolutely correct on that as domestic advertisers aren't going to give much of a damn about things outside the domestic market. But the way he phrased it came off as callous and worded incredibly poorly.

He's not dumb and I don't believe he's a racist. Out-of-touch, maybe a little, but not as much as some of his detractors would like to think. It's a reference to an old forum meme. "Vince Russo is a dumb out-of-touch racist. Also, a sexist homophobe." I don't think Meltzer is racist or dumb either, for the record, he just fundamentally lacks the tools to discuss anything race or gender related and hasn't shown any effort over the years to improve himself in that regard.

Dave Meltzer's biggest problem is that his life has been combat sports journalism for just under forty years largely under his own publication/editorial and with little outside involvement, and it shows. Dude has no idea how to talk about stuff, let alone talk about stuff in 2021, and he has nobody over his shoulder to try and drag him on track. And that's not all to say that he shouldn't be criticized or told "hey dude stop this", but I think comparisons to the sorts of sports writers/broadcasters who've been dragged off for their shitty comments is a bit of a stretch.

I think the issue was during Dave s heyday there wasn't anyone around covering wrestling and MMA like he was. So no one could really tell him to chill out and watch what he says. Plus when your competition in MMA journalism is murderer Rafiel Torre, you look great next to that.

I mean, even if it is completely his idea (which I highly doubt) the Apollo thing is still a ridiculous racist cartoon. Same way that the Orlando Jordan, "He's bi so he's basically a rapist," gimmick wasn't okay just because it was his idea. I'm sure it was his idea the same way it was Mark Henry's idea to call himself "The Silverback"

I feel like it should be noted somewhere that the Twitter account that posted the Meltzer "Puerto Rican" comment is an alt. of an account that got banned for targeted harassment of Meltzer, Cody, Brandi, and (inexplicably) Shawn Spears. So while Meltzer is certainly a problematic and, at times, very dumb man, there's a definite agenda in terms of how some of his stuff gets reported.

Yeah whoever runs that account is an obsessive weirdo no doubt.

Is that the Meltzer says What account? Yeah whoever runs that account is an obsessive weirdo no doubt. Bluray Wrestling (formerly VCR Wrestling), though I'm pretty positive they're an alt. of Meltzer Says What? as well. Why you'd devote this much energy to discrediting a friggin' pro wrestling journalist is beyond me.

There's a British one, Admiral Lord Baron Mountevans, who dedicates a lot of time to whinging about Dave Meltzer too. I've noticed they're all ridiculously pedantic and rather than criticising him for things that should be criticised it's stuff like "He called Konnan American and he's actually Cuban American" as if that's some huge gotcha.

IMO, Meltzer is a wrestling historian. He's a turd of a "journalist" however.

It's not limited to there, unfortunately. r/SquaredCircle on Reddit has a lot of good wrestling discussion, but it also has a lot of ridiculous human beings many of whom belong to the r/SCJerk sub - which appears to exist largely to bait Meltzer - and persistently brigade anything loosely connected to him and basically ruin everything with stuff like this.
As I said, I'm pretty ambivalent towards him and there are legitimate criticisms to be made, but it's like the nerds in the Simpsons who've got nothing better to do than pick holes in Itchy & Scratchy and think they're incredibly perceptive for doing so.

Thanks so much Orlando for that 'representation' of us Meltzer's stuff about blood turning women off is not just anecdotes or speculation, it's factual demonstrable data borne out in ratings. Blood and excessive violence turns off more women than it draws in men, even for something as well-received and watched as Britt Baker vs. Thunder Rosa. The plural of anecdote is not data, that is true--so an anecdote about a woman at a gathering who liked the violence is similarly meaningless. She's an exception. Source?

Oh believe me dude, I am well aware of SCJerk. SquaredCircle is largely full of morons too but they lack the deliberate toxicity of their "parody" sub. Like, I get not liking Meltzer and I get not liking AEW, but to spend all your free time trashing non-WWE stuff because people don't like WWE enough is honestly pathetic. I have no doubt that Meltzer Says What? and other similar accounts spawned from that cesspool.

And yeah, that kind of contrarianism is seriously sad, and that kind of nastiness over differences of opinion on wrestling. A lot of users are very much guilty of racism and misogyny and other things they love to criticise Meltzer about, and the way they bully users who disagree or call them out on it is insane. I've heard of people being doxxed on there, and I was personally harassed by an SCJerk user both publicly and privately on Reddit because I think I hadn't been glowing in praise of WWE's broadcasting deals.
