...to play the s***y games that suck ass!
On April 8th, 2006, an innocuous video was uploaded to YT where a voice-over takes a critical look at the NES game Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, using many colorful remarks to describe it:
(I admit, research says that this video was actually made in May 2004 and that it was available as a part of a film compilation tape with other short films before then, but since Youtube is probably where James got his most notoriety from, I count the upload date to YT where it was made widely available as the official debut)
In addition, two other videos were uploaded that day with a guy in a white business shirt, pens in his pocket and nerdy glasses takes the same expletive-laden look at two other NES games, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde as well as The Karate Kid.
Thus, the Angry Nintendo Nerd or as he is much more well-known, the Angry Video Game Nerd was born. Since then, he has become maybe (alongside the Nostalgia Critic) the most well-known of internet-reviewers who still remains popular even to this day even though his output has gotten more formulaic over time.
Personally, I love the AVGN and still look forward to any new episode he puts out (even if most of the time, it doesn't come close to his earlier work) and despite there also having been some incidents behind the scenes, I would still argue that James is a decent person for the most part who comes across as likable even in his non-AVGN work (certainly hasn't reached the depths of depravity that Channel Awesome has done).

I think he's by far the best internet reviewer (like, light years past Nostalgia Critic and his ilk) and I think it's pretty tremendous he's not only maintained his fanbase for 15 years, but he's one of like a handful of internet content creators to go this long without either 1) doing something super problematic or 2) letting it destroy his life.
Still always tune in to catch him. I think I got into him in summer 2007. Got the first three blu rays and the movie too.

Gosh .... 15 years. His content is still good. His Darkman review was fun.
Plumbers Dont Wear Ties will always be his best. I'll never not laugh at his reaction when the chicken mask appears.

"He'd rather have a Bouffalant take a diarrhea dump in his ear."
"He'd rather eat the rotten a***ole of a roadkill Skuntank and down it with beer!"
No I don't care if that's not how the song goes. I use Pokemon because that makes it funnier.

My personal highlights that came to my mind are:
His final meltdown on the controls in Batman Forever for the SNES:
Also, all the interactions with Bugs Bunny in the Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout episode (while I laughed at his videos for a while, the line "Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blowout? How about Bugs Bunny's Birthday Beating?" sent me to the floor laughing).

I think what's helped is that James comes across like a really nice guy behind the scenes. He hasn't let YouTube go to his head in the way Doug allowed it to. Plus I think a lot of his stuff outside the Nerd has been very good which has added to his positive perception. Doug tried doing new things which weren't well received, but rather then take those onboard tried shoehorning them into the stuff people liked.

My brother was super into him, I was more a Captain S fan at the time (and probably the only one), I remember there was a lot of ire from the fans directed at that production when they crossed over with James and 'forced' AVGN to be a more sanitized product to fit the tone of that show.
I've never seen the AVGN movie, the trailers make it look like just another 2000s era gross-out comedy that probably hasn't aged well and wouldn't fly if made today. It did introduce me to Andre 'The Black Nerd' though
Glad James is still around and hasn't really lost his touch. I still tune in from time to time.

You know what? I STILL like the videos!
(I also still watch NC when it's a movie or show I'm interested in, but...yeah.)
Like how he's evolved his online presence with Cinemassacre and James and Mike Mondays.

Totally agree about PDWT being the best one. It's such a horrendous game that it gave him great material to work with. My favourite bit is just a throwaway line, but it's so fantastically delivered: Game: "This is the worst score in the history of this game!" Nerd: "What, somebody else played this shit?" The fact James seems like a genuinely nice guy, on top of his other great videos (he did a comparison vid on the different versions of Dracula that I was really invested in) makes you root for him. His creativity & sporadic release schedule have also meant his reviews have rarely become stale. I will admit to being put off by him originally, as it all seemed like swearing & scatalogical humour. I'm pleased to say how wrong I was, & I go back & watch old videos regularly.

Pretty much in agreement. There are some that have been funny to watch or creative in execution but honestly, if you want to boil down the AVGN to one review, it’s that one.

Been a fan of his since 2008. Even if his new reviews are hit or miss I still click the second I see one.

I like his videos when he just does straightforward ones and doesn't do a bunch of skits or mini-movies in them.

I met him at a local video game store awhile back and he was really nice and gracious with everyone. Seems like a genuinely decent person and it's very much a character for him as opposed to other video creators who try a bit too hard to live the gimmick.
He and Mega 64 are my favorites from that era of video game Youtube stuff.

I got into him watching his Batman two parter and his Halloween episode, haven't regretted following him since.

I tend to like his reviews better without skits, mostly because I get grossed out easily and half of his sketch comedy is just shit jokes.
I think my favorite older ones have to be the Coleco and Intellivision two parter, and the one where he spends a whole video failing to get an Atari 5200 to work.

I met him at Yestercades and he was one of the nicest human beings you can ever meet. Ghostbusters 2016 controversy aside, its amazing how free of drama hes been and how he can change up his format. (I enjoyed the rental store reviews)
