I just watched the Ice Train/Scott Norton match from Fall Brawl 1996, and I have to say, he actually was pretty underrated. He had good power moves and moved around well, surprised he didnt go anywhere after WCW shut down.

He was good. Probably was laid back guy with no interest in politics so he just got skipped over. Come to think of it, WCW didn't have any big African Americans on the roster at that time right?

He's one of those guys who's evidence of how much wrestling has changed in the last 25 years or so. Then he was just another big power guy in a sea of big power guys, now he'd be guaranteed to be a big deal somewhere because he'd be a big power guy in a sea of smaller athletic wrestlers.

By OSW standards, he was definitely one of my boys.
Anybody remember his short-lived run as M.I. Smooth?

And also of how much it changed from about 1985 onwards. Creatively one of the worst legacies of the eighties wrestling boom was that it created this expectation that all wrestlers should fit that mould, and that large and powerful became the norm causing all these wrestlers who would've been real novelties before to get lost in the shuffle.

Did a little search and apparently he was making a comeback on the indie scene before Covid kind of threw a wrench in that.

As a kid I loved the guys like Ice Train. I enjoyed seeing the undercard guys. That is the one thing that I liked about WCW over WWF. Much like the Attitude Era where it was said "everyone had a spot on the card" or something like that, WCW always had a lot of guys with a gimmick who had something to do pre Nitro. They had regular name jobbers but there jobbers to the bigger stars would get wins over the regular name jobbers. The only thing I didn't like is that lots of guys wouldn't last very long like Charlie Norris, Jungle Jim Steele, Kongs, Thunder and Lightning and more. Lastly on google images I saw a 1993 WCW promo photo with Ice Train and Thunderbolt Patterson. I don't remember that at all, I wonder if that grouping ever made it to a TV taping. I don't even remember Ice Train until late 1993 though wikipedia says he came in around July 1993.

It probably hasn’t aged well due to the many chair shots to the head, but I really remember digging that moment when Kanyon hitting him over and over and he just kept getting back up like he was Frankenstein’s monster. I vividly remember my dad walking into the room as I was watching and went “Who the hell is that guy?” So I think he dig him too. It’s a shame that was one of the last shows WCW ever did, he could have been in line for a push before they closed.
