Between just generally sounding tired / disinterested in everything, the Killer Karl Kox namedrop, him completely blanking on what a spinebuster was, when he started edging into, "If you don't love it leave it," territory with Ogogo, lot of really bad stuff tonight. Having so much of Taz on commentary kind of didn't help but draw attention to it either because he's just so much better.

I know JR has his good nights where he's not shit but it's honestly not worth the mediocre nights nor the shit like tonight where it's just a massive drag. He's holding the booth back

JR's mentioned Killer Karl Kox multiple times on commentary, what shocks me is no one seems to get the optics of saying his name. I know he's an innovator of a move but even just saying "Karl Kox" eliminates the issue...
That being said JR still has good moments and calls but maybe he should be saved more for attraction matches to save his energy and his enthusiasm.

I agree completely, he had an off night. The random Butch Reed non-sequitur was especially jarring to me, too. Comparing Will Hobbs to a midcarder from the early 90s isn’t really going to do much to get him over.
But the YOU CAN GET OUT comment was Tony, in fairness.

I almost dread next weeks Jacksons/Sydels PWG Showcase match if he’s having another off night...

That's the best comparison you could have come up with. That's not even the best comparison he could have come up with from Doom.

Tonight was especially noticeable for me for the matches Taz guest commentated on, when the show started I was hoping JR had the night off and was like "aawwwww mannn" when I heard him.

He’s got one of the best spinebusters in the business and JR called it an “uh...power....bomb” then doubled down when Taz corrected him.

The Butch Reed comparison is because Butch Reed himself before he passed was a big fan of Hobbs, and called him "The new Butch Reed" Butch giving respect to Hobbs before he died is still a really cool moment and it didn't take me out of anything it just showed how many eyes Hobbs is turning.

Because yeah he's calling Omega/Swann but that's Impact's PPV.

Not going to comment on JR because I'm done with him, but Butch Reed was a major star in Mid-South and was amazing in Doom. I don't really consider his WWF run much because at that time black people in the WWF had pseudo-racist gimmicks as it is, and never got past the mid-card. He literally had blonde hair because Vince thought it would be funny to see a black man with blonde hair. Hacksaw Butch Reed was great, and Butch did have good things to say about Hobbs before his passing, so it's not out of nowhere.

Lord choosing between Mauro and JR is like choosing which rib I want to be punched in. Least Mauro acts like he gives a damn. Also, less accidental racism and sexism. Also less openly crapping on wrestlers or wrestling tropes.

He's just calling the main event between Omega and Swann at Impact's Rebellion event.
That said, JR brainfarting on calling one of the sickest looking spinebusters this side of Arn Anderson a "powerbomb" was just... yeesh.

Tonight was the closest he's been to his time in New Japan when he just forgot wrestler's names.

I lost a ton of respect for him after the excuses he made for that. And Tama Tonga is one of my heroes for having the guts to call him out and not bow to him because he's a "legend."
