His commentary will be edited with the show being taped. With Mauro coming soon and JRs contract expiring next year, seems that they are getting ready to phase him out. Is Mauro Ranallo officially going to call AEW matches? Because yeah he's calling Omega/Swann but that's Impact's PPV. He is expected to join the booth for the 2nd TNT show, (Renee as well) I assume by the Summer the 2nd TNT show will be ready to go.

I'm guessing that won't happen but a Mauro and Renee panel sounds like a crushing tidal wave of perkiness.

Yeah he was bad, like really really bad. He drags down the product so much for me at times. He clearly doesn't give a shit about the majority of the show but he's here to stay since clearly no one in power will do anything about it.

I agree completely, he had an off night. The random Butch Reed non-sequitur was especially jarring to me, too. Comparing Will Hobbs to a midcarder from the early 90s isn’t really going to do much to get him over. But the YOU CAN GET OUT comment was Tony, in fairness. The Butch Reed comparison is because Butch Reed himself before he passed was a big fan of Hobbs, and called him "The new Butch Reed" Butch giving respect to Hobbs before he died is still a really cool moment and it didn't take me out of anything it just showed how many eyes Hobbs is turning. Fair enough...I didn’t realize that, and I guess that’s not such a bad reference, then. I’m just really over JR’s trope of comparing the current guys to random guys from yesteryear. I’m not a JR hater at all, generally, but that’s probably his worst trope to me, because it just makes it seems like he thinks the old guys were better than the current workers, and really doesn’t do a whole lot to promote the current workers.

Until it's at a point where it's weekly bad and there is a large portion of the fanbase actively against him commentating, they probably will not. JR still has a lot of undying fans, and some fans who have tuned into AEW just to hear him call matches. At this point JR's critics are a vocal minority which does not actively effect the shows numbers or their overall quality. Until that day comes, I don't see him leaving the booth.

Yep. Yep. Agreed really hard with this, and tonight showed why it's such a problem. I've said it before: it really speaks to a nostalgic streak in JR that his big references are all to the 80's, when he has been a part of wrestling continuously since then. If he's more likely to reference Killer Karl Kox (which, as noted, oof) than anyone from the 90's or the 00's, then he is painfully out of touch. Hell, he forgot the name of the Spinebuster, but he still remembered Arn Anderson while doing so.

Being an old school fan I really like the Butch Reed comparison. I know I'm in the minority but I still enjoy his announcing. Especially when a wrestler does something that doesn't make sense or is just silly and he calls them out on it. I like that.

Genuine question: not that it makes it any more bearable to get through, but what are the odds that age is finally starting to catch up with him?

He signed on for a three year contract when AEW began, so even with him saying he will try to re-sign, I imagine they might pass on doing it full-time. I know JR doesn't really have any interest in retirement given his wife's gone, but something's got to give.

A new wrestling company should have new voices on commentary to establish their own identity, not someone who is so closely associated with WWE.

I really, truly, genuinely believe that the actual human being Jim Ross isn't a bad person. Little on the spineless side, and definitely stuck in his ways on some shit no one but him seems to care about, but I think he's a good guy all things considered. His commentary is awful 85% of the time anymore. I've tried defending him, because when he DOES care and is engaged, he's still the best. Those moments are fleeting and far between these days. It's sad, because I feel like he's the type that'll go home and basically die within a few years once he's done having a job (not to be morbid, but we all know the type that are like that, but he's a distraction. Maybe they can give him an off-camera role, or something, I don't know.

A new wrestling company should have new voices on commentary to establish their own identity, not someone who is so closely associated with WWE. Having JR at the start felt like something they could use to legitimize AEW. At this point, the other two announcers were Excalibur, known to the smart fans but never given a chance on a National stage, and Alex Marvez, who had never done the job before. But with people like Taz, Schiavone, Paul Wight... one has to ask when does JR legitimize the company, and when is he just the old guy who talks about the good ol' days. Honestly, I really want JR to be put behind the scenes, producing the commentators, and coming out for the big shows. My girlfriend's dad is a big wrestling nut. We got him to watch AEW before the pandemic, because they had guys like Jericho and JR.. and his reaction was "JR just sounds so tired." and he does.

The spinebuster thing was bizarre.
Taz jumped in to help JR out and say what the move was and then JR sounded pissy and seemed to make fun of Taz's accent. "Spinebustaaa" Like dude, you couldn't remember the name of a really famous move and the guy jumped in to help you, why are you acting insulted?
Not the first time actually I've detected some tension between JR and Taz on commentary in AEW. I remember one time when JR again wasn't paying attention and was complaining about the legal tag and who was the legal man and Taz had to tell him it was a tornado tag.
Maybe their feud in 2000 was a shoot.

Not going to comment on JR because I'm done with him, but Butch Reed was a major star in Mid-South and was amazing in Doom. I don't really consider his WWF run much because at that time black people in the WWF had pseudo-racist gimmicks as it is, and never got past the mid-card. He literally had blonde hair because Vince thought it would be funny to see a black man with blonde hair. Hacksaw Butch Reed was great, and Butch did have good things to say about Hobbs before his passing, so it's not out of nowhere. Reed actually started out in WWF with a decent push, and was supposedly scheduled to win the IC Title before no-showing some events, leading them to give it to Honky Tonk instead. He was in and out in 18 months. But yes, calling someone Butch Reed is not an insult at all.

He sounds completely checked out and just there for the cheque at this point. It’s a range of bored or sitting with his face in his hands.

I've had absolutely no issues with JR his entire AEW run, aside from his accidental old man slips.

Even on his worst night I'd still gladly take JR over any WWE commentator, but it's obvious that age (and the irritability that comes with it) is catching up with him fast. When he's on, he's on, but when he's off he sounds like...well, like a cranky old man. For now I'm just gonna' appreciate the dude while he's still here, brush off the bad nights, and quietly hope they phase him out once the second TNT show arrives.
