I've been on an Arkham kick, finally finishing Knight and having successfully worked my way back to Asylum. So I've got Batman on the brain.
I'm a big Batman fan, but at the same time very casual. My only real exposure to the Batman family is from the Schumacher films and their peripheral involvement in the Arkham series.
I'm curious, what does everyone here prefer when it comes to Batman? The whole Batman family, or Batman the solo vigilante? What are the pros and cons of each version, why do you prefer either one, etc?
I'm used to and prefer Batman to fly solo, but at the same time the inclusion of the other characters helped flesh out the Arkham universe, making it feel more alive.

The older a fan I get, the more I realise it's probably Nightwing that suits a Bat family better than Bruce.
I'd just have Bruce and Selina retire and make babies and make the franchise all about Dick, but just as Nightwing, not as a Batman successor.

The Bat Family just provides a lot more storytelling opportunities.
That being said I do think some branches need to be cut off of it. Jason pretty much has no reason to continue to be alive and I wouldn't exactly mind ditching Damian either.

Batman is fine on his own but the Bat family adds so much without taking anything away. People who want to pretend Bruce is a miserable loner fundamentally don't understand the character.

I really enjoy the Bat Family, and I think they’re at their best when they’re still connected but all off doing their own thing. Right now you have Barbara Gordon and The Batgirls doing their thing, The Outsiders (Black Lightning, Signal, Katana) doing their own thing, Dick has Titans Academy, Bludhaven and something with Babs.
Everyone has their own thing going on, can be shuffled around into whatever groups they need to be. I’m quite interested in where the whole Bat Family is going. Batman Urban Legends has been a great book so far

Batman being solo is OK at times, but from my experiences when he has someone else with him he's better.
Then again when I don't read the comics that much, and all media until the Burton film (which could since it was a first part of things) depicted Batman with Robin.

If it helps I think it's pretty much inevitable that Jon gets killed, disappears for five years, then goes back to being a kid like nothing happened. Still a mindnumbingly stupid direction to take the character in to begin with though.

Personally I’ve always preferred solo Batman stories. I understand it gives more story potential to have Robin, Nightwing etc around to counter Batman. but for whatever reason Batman is cooler as the brooding, antisocial singular hero. To me his family was Alfred, Gordon and Fox, all father figures.

I used to like the Bat-family concept until the family itself got too bloated. It seems like every new writer that comes onboard the Bat-books wants to add their own new character/s at the expense of all the previous ones. Green Lantern and the X-Men have similar problems, with new writers wanting to add new Earth GLs and new classes of young X-Men, leading to overinflated casts and broken fan bases.

Yeah, it's really blown up lately in Tynion's run where he adds a new character every month

I much prefer the Bat Family, it opens way more story telling opportunities and honestly makes the world feel more alive.
Not everything has to have all 5 robins involved, so he can go off and do his own thing... but still having the support network behind him that can help him investigate things.

I prefer the Batman Family... without Batman. Honestly, the stories of the people he inspired to fight in his name are usually more interesting then Batman himself at this point.

don't mind either him being solo or with da fam ... hell i even tolerated bat-mite for flips sake ...
one thing i would like to have expanded is his detective work, touched upon in the burton/schumacher movies and only in the dark knight! well i think so anyway
begin alone or with familiar help is just as good

I love the Bat Family. Dick Grayson is my favorite comic character in general.
The Bat Family shows that Bruce can be more than Grumpy Vengeful Man, which is why most directors won't touch it because all they want to do is Frank Miller diarrhea movies.
