Well, Netflix is now implementing password sharing restrictions. Will WBD follow suit? I really don't think that's their top priority right now. Next year is when they'll potentially be launching in markets like the rest of Europe along with merging Discovery with HBO Max and then trying to get content back on the service after cancelling or purging others. I think they need to find where their ceiling is in terms of users before they try and find ways to get more. Like, regardless of what you can say about Netflix's attempts (and man, do they seem like they haven't thought of other devices at all), they at least can see how many people are sharing and how many people have individual accounts.

Eesh. Between this and Bally Sports filing for bankruptcy, it's been a really rough time for RSN's.

Lord of The Rings is done, they can't be making more films as there's no story left.

They haven't seen a single independent film, but saw the last few MCU films. People would rather hate-watch Velma than watch a new original animated project. Don't kid yourself.

Case in point: Speaking of which, it was really weird that the shareholders conference basically ignored this was happening when they were talking about LOTR, especially considering, like, this thing was announced almost two years ago. It's a minor thing but sort of shows again how little some companies take animation, especially ones based on their own IPs.

They can make money, but they also can backfire when the investment doesn't get matched. If WBD want to claw their way out of debt, they probably need to diversify things a bit, too, with smaller projects as well. That doesn't necessarily guarantee you'll make money, obviously, but if you have a 200 million dollar movie tank, it's a lot of more catastrophic than making a handful of smaller movies and a couple of them might catch on.

I don't think that's being entirely fair to original stuff. Amphibia, Owl House, and Infinity Train were all animated and people did raise a massive fuss over them when they were treated badly.

You could argue that a bunch of 200m+ movies not making a profit is one of the reasons WBD's having to clear the debt they have in the first place.

Ever heard the saying "films are not released, they escape"?
One of Zaslav's tax write-offs just escaped.

HBO isn't much of a thing internationally so HBO Max probably wasn't the smartest choice for the overall branding worldwide, but changing that is just shifting deckchairs on the titanic at this point, or blaming the incorrectly placed furniture for the ship sinking.

ok as someone who doesn't live in the U.S. the HBO's shows that we get are usually well written & acted shows (game of thrones, house of dragon, the last of us, the wire and so on.) so how in the blue hell can someone think the HBO branding leads to people not wanting to subscribe?

If that was a consideration at the time the service launched I'd get it, since with the multiple redundant HBO streaming services it was definitely confusing to keep track of, but now, several years later? Yeah, that's just stupid.
