It was both explicit and implied that the Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase threw tons of money around in order make things go his way in the WWF, but it often was just money down the drain. I was trying to think of all the things that he wasted his money on over the years.
-In an effort to obtain the WWF Title, he bought Andre the Giant's services from Bobby Heenan AND paid unknown amounts of cash to get some random man extensive plastic surgery so that he looked like referee Dave Hebner and could fix the Andre/Hogan Match. If he didn't think Andre would win, why pay him? And why not just get the phony ref and ditch Andre entirely? Also, there wasn't one ref you could pay off? Danny Davis was cheating people back in 1986-87. And he might have been doing it for free. Surely Dibiase could've just paid someone off instead of getting the plastic surgery. All this results in him being stripped of the title anyways.
-He tried to buy off Jesse Ventura when he was the ref for the Mega Bucks vs. Mega Powers SummerSlam '88 Main Event. They of course lost. At least he showed he was learning by not paying to have someone get plastic surgery to look like Jesse Ventura.
-He tried to buy Hercules as a slave. Not only illegal, it never occurred to him that Hercules would object to this. Why didn't he buy another bodyguard? Did he want Hercules to pave a new driveway or something for him? There are contractors for that stuff who probably would've been cheaper and done a better job.
-He paid a bunch of money for Number 30 in the 1989 Rumble and likely paid the Twin Towers and Slick to help him, but he lost anyways.
-It was frequently mentioned that he paid money to Bobby Heenan for who knows what. Other than getting a slave who couldn't/didn't have to work for him, the only time I recall them working together is to help Mr. Perfect win the IC Title back from the Texas Tornado. Now Dibiase might have done that for free since he was mad at Tornado for having saved Dustin Rhodes from a beating, but it's possible he was paying Heenan AND helping him win the title.
-He paid a bunch of "incentive money" to his team for the Grand Finale Match of Survival at Survivor Series 1990. Why he thought it was so important to win that match is anyone's guess. Especially since (in kayfabe) he was facing the Ultimate Warrior for the WWF Title the following night. Why didn't he spend more money trying to win that instead!?
-He was said to be the benefactor of Brother Love. Lord knows what he got out of that deal. Did he get to peak at the guest list? Was he just that much of a believer in the Book of Love?
I'm sure there are many others. What did I miss that you remember?
