Well done Italy. England, hold your heads high. Because? They failed. There is no shame in losing a final with the last kick of the tournament.

England hasn’t flopped this hard with a win in their grasp since the signing of the Treaty of Paris.

an absolutely GUTTING penalty shootout for the english!!! but not very good penalties either for england, too much movement, the same height for all three missed ... but ITALY ARE THE UEFA EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS for the year 2020!!! after a stunning start from england, the italians proved why they are the number one team in europe, but to their credit england had chances too but once again penalties becomes their undoing ... italy were LUCKY to have eleven players on the pitch after that tackle on grielish! a young team and a old lesson ... ITALY win it for the first time since 1968 sta tornando a casa sta tornando a casa sta arrivando il calcio sta tornando a casa

I dont get why they put Saka in there, it was such a huge task for someone who is 19.

And I’m saying this now (and remember, I’m a Scotland fan). ANYONE who posts in this thread gloating or trying to get a reaction from the England fans here, will be rewarded with a long break from this board.

This is rough. Really question leaving Rashford and Sancho so late. Definitely question putting Saka in the 5 slot when he's a 19 year whose looked nervous all game. Poor lad.
Italians were the better team. Game might've gone a different way if we went for it more after the first goal and Italy were off balance.
I am proud of the England team. They're a good bunch of lads and really feel for them. But they're young and they'll be back.

Harsh to have a 19 year old having to score a penalty to keep your country in the game. I voted for Italy to win but that’s rough to see that young lad in bits. That’s not something anyone should be happy about.

Two cold players and a kid to take pens was always going to be risky.

Rashford took too long to take his pen. Overthought it. I could have made a cup of tea during his run up.

Congratulations to Italy, weathered the storm and changed it up. Wish I'd put some money on them before the quarters! Mancini particularly deserves a huge pat on the back.
Lots of misses all round in the shoot-out, but it's always a risky lottery.
Still England's best result since 1966. I don't feel downcast or upset at all. The key thing is, can they make going far and making semis/finals a regular thing? That's the big challenge now. You've broken the hoo-doo, there's still a lot of young players in that squad, make this a beginning!

The guy handing the medals to England must be feeling kind of pointless since half of them took them off before they even got out of shot.

In hindsight a comment made on the radio, that England were taking their time getting their penalty takers sorted might have something to it.

So Chiellini and Bonucci. Will they carry on and try for the World Cup next year? I hope so, let them bow out on the biggest stage in the sporting world.

FFS Southgate's subs cost us that. Will never get the logic of anybody coming on cold just for pens, extra pressure on what is often their first kick if the game. Even more stupid when then was still a corner to defend. Plus their fresh legs might have helped earlier.
Don't blame Saka or Sancho, don't know wtf Rashford was thinking.
That said Italy just deserved it, especially the two old guys at the back.

As I’ve just said it’s awful pressure for someone that young. Couldve put Sterling or even Grealish, England had that momentum after Jorginho missed his pk Neither Sterling nor Grealish are regular penalty takers and have missed more than they've scored in their careers. Sterling is 2-3 and Grealish is 0-1. In terms of picking players to take penalties, England weren't spoilt for choice. If pre-tournament talk was to be believed, Pickford was expected to take a penalty ahead of some of the outfield players.

England have nothing to be ashamed of here.
The only ones who need to be ashamed are Chiellini and that git that tried to break Grealish's leg and then acted like he'd been challenged too so he wouldn't get a red for it.
Glad you got saved and ruined your penalty record, mate.
