Couldve put Sterling or even Grealish, England had that momentum after Jorginho missed his pk Neither Sterling nor Grealish are regular penalty takers and have missed more than they've scored in their careers. Sterling is 2-3 and Grealish is 0-1. In terms of picking players to take penalties, England weren't spoilt for choice. If pre-tournament talk was to be believed, Pickford was expected to take a penalty ahead of some of the outfield players. Not like we ever win a penalty because our main striker is listed as a "diver" because he went down when a Villa player swung for him during a dead ball, but Kalvin is Leeds' penalty taker and he has a lot more experience under pressure than Saka.

Trying hard to fight back the tears at the end there absolutely gutted. Especially for Saka missing the last penalty. Congrats to Italy but hopefully England can move on. I really hope we can.

I’m going to take a guess at a peak of 33m viewers in the UK. With BBC claiming 75% of the share.

Fair play to Gareth Southgate for saying it was his call to put saka as the penalty tacker and any criticism is on him.

England have nothing to be ashamed of here. The only ones who need to be ashamed are Chiellini and that git that tried to break Grealish's leg and then acted like he'd been challenged too so he wouldn't get a red for it. Glad you got saved and ruined your penalty record, mate. In my opinion that was an accident, he got his foot on the ball and it slipped off. I will agree the play acting that followed was pathetic

Sadly, and depressingly predictably, the fact that the three players to miss penatlies are all black has not lost been on a certain selection of "fans" who have taken to social media.

I’m not an England fan so their loss of the penalties doesn’t bother me however I felt really bad for Saka at the end
The mental toughness for a kid at that age to take such a high profile penalty is a credit to him even if he missed it

Honestly that was one of the first things that came to mind when it finished, I have such low faith in humanity that I figured it was only a matter of time before that sort of shameful abuse appeared on social media

I’ve seen it mentioned on Twitter and it’s awful that it has to be said. Well some of those “fans” would probably Involved in the rubbish on the streets of London and then at Wembley stadium before the game. Those videos while not a reflection on the entire England fan base, as a neutral it’s not a “minority” as some say it is.

Chiellini grabbing a player by the back of the neck is so out of order that a rugby ref would have thrown him out.

I’m not saying he deserved it any less than any other player but Marcus Rashford? The guy who helped restore faith in footballers when it was needed most. c***s.

I mean considering how VAR has been implemented in the English premier league I would agree with you on that but still don’t think it would have been right Studs were out because he was stretching for the ball in my opinion. Clearly got the ball first Not saying it wasn’t a poor tackle that was well worthy of the yellow card that it got. Just don’t think a red would have been right (again, just in my opinion)

I mean it’s not just Rashford either. The rubbish that Sterling went through in the UK media for buying his mother a house was baffling for me looking from Ireland because it made zero f***ing sense.

I didn't give a singular damn about their godawful opinions before the game, certainly not going to waste my time with them now.
Rashford deserves a knighthood given what he's done for the country, when those in much bigger positions of power wouldn't lift a finger.

It's always people like that simpering wanker Darren Grimes (who's already putting the boots in on Twitter) who are upset when elite sportsmen don't show enough social conscience and responsibility, then Rash did and they went "No, not like that." What they mean is you're not to do it when you're black and make their spiritual king look bad. Don't want to break the politics rule but I think it needs to be said.

I was pissed at Rashford and may or may not have yelled "TWAT" at my tv, but the man is a hero and Twitter deserves to be taken down.
