I love the stuff doing the rounds on social media about how Chiellini got booked for pulling s shirt and if that is what a winner looks like, theyâd rather lose. Bollocks. I donât know any England fans who wouldnât take having a player booked for a cynical foul if it meant winning a tournament. Especially coming so soon after the somewhat dubious penalty won by Sterling against the Danes. Every team will push the boundaries of fair play across a tournament.

Some England fans claim to have this âIâd rather lose cleanly than win dirtyâ mentality. But I have always maintained that if an England player âdid a Suarezâ and deliberately prevented a goal by handballing a shot and getting themselves sent off, they would be held up as a âselfless hero, sacrificing themselves for the good of the teamâ. (Yes, Suarez had history even then as being a tit and his celebrating was not pleasant at all. But the general point still stands).

reminds me of Everton against the Top teams of the Premier League. LOL That's been the English way of football forever. It's much better than it was but, it's still only a level above the Sam Allardyce " Hoof it up the pitch and pray one of the strikers gets it" strategy. A similar strategy to jack charlton as Republic of Ireland manager then ? Packie bonner hoofing it up the pitch and hoping for a knock down in the box and a goal. We got to one euros and two world cups over a six year period but it wasnât pretty to watch.

Also, if English fans think they're going to somehow shame Italy and Italian fans for how they won, they're barking up the wrong tree. Much as I may not like it, Italy was utterly shameless about the fact that they were willing to win by any means necessary and couldn't care less what anyone said or thought about it.

It's all a bit silly. The Denmark free kick leading to their goal was pretty soft, but they sure as hell didn't mind about that and nor should they. Italy don't give a fig if anyone moans about their succession of career-ending crippling injuries magically healing up, and again nor should they, they've got the cup.
Though...while the continual abuse of certain players in the England camp should never happen, as if I have to bloody say that, if losing the Euro Cup final means exposing a bunch of racist morons and forcing certain people to face some of the dog whistles and callous structure they're in charge of, that would be a silver lining.
I keep thinking about the alternate situation where England won the cup. Sure, fireworks, bus parades, pyro and ballyhoo. Hell of a lot getting swept under the carpet, though, and those happy to hand out the abuse would be hypocritically waving the flag.

The hypocrisy from our press and politicians over the past few days has been absolutely breathtaking.

The hypocrisy from our press and politicians over the past few days has been absolutely breathtaking. And it amplifies how much the squad has come out of this with immense dignity.

The result of the final has been rendered irrelevant for England. There's clearly a more pressing issue to address than a silver trophy. England has always attracted a toxic element among its fanbase, and now that element has state sanction. There's no surprise they feel emboldened now.

I would fully support the England team if there was a mass international retirement after this, if the generation of players we have that could win the world cup just up and declared they no longer wish to represent a country that behaved this way towards them, from people in government condemning, even saying gthey'll root agains them for their freedom of speech, the press that hounded them continually since the earliest days of their careers, to the yobs who embarassed the team and threatened their lives despite their hard work and success.
Powerful people paved the way to this happening, emboldened the worst people for personal gain and now act like they're shocked this happened.

While I agree with you.... sadly, I don't think this would change behavior. I don't know how to change the behavior of these idiots.

There's taking a yellow by bumping someone as last man, and then there's ragging someone by their collar like a total twat. Especially because he still kept up his "hey look, I'm so smiley and friendly" shit after that. If that penalty with the laser pen went in the first time, I'd consider that tainted too.

A mass boycott of social media by English clubs and players is the only way they will make any sort of impact. Clubs should create in house moderated message boards like this one for their fans, rather than relying on the cesspool that is social media. Players can post messages from time to time on those sites under controlled conditions.
