Nope on Barry Sanders, and his playoff numbers explain why. That doesn't explain his prime not being wasted at all. They never surrounded him with real talent, and it's easy to key on a RB in the playoffs. Look at Payton's numbers, look at Bettis', look at Curtis Martin's in New York, look at Tiki Barber when he was an All-Pro. Stacking the box doesn't mean you're not the real deal, it means your QB isn't. The Lions were a consistent playoff team in the 90's, and they did have talented players. Herman Moore, Brett Perriman, Mel Gray, Johnny Morton, and a talented defense with Chris Spielman leading it. What they didn't have was a quarterback, at least not one good enough overtake Aikman, Young, and Favre. Basically what I'm saying is the Lions were trying, and a hell of a lot more than they have in recent years.

Herman Moore was their best offensive player of note, the rest of the supporting cast on offense was league-average players at-best. How you gonna throw shade at arguably the best RB of all time (easily top 3) while complimenting Brett Perriman is beyond me. The Lions being even more incompetent as of late doesn't mean Sanders' prime was any less wasted.

Andrew Luck could've had a HOF Career, if the Colts could've been bothered to give him an o-line that could protect him and not result in getting hammered every play

Morton was a good WR too, and Moore and Morton were both 1000+ guys but the rest of that team, maybe save for a good FB was hot garbage.

I grew up watching Cory Dillon carry the mid/late 90s Bengals on his back. He was the man and on just the dirt worst teams.
Was happy he went to Pats to win a title before he retired.

Shortly after he did, Moore's production fell off a cliff. The overlap was Sanders' last season when they failed to make the playoffs altogether. It makes sense why he retired. Perriman had a very Michael Clayton-esque career. As a Bucs fan at the time, Sanders scared the pants off me. Their WRs were mostly guys who could be shut down in the playoffs as well, which is what happened to them against Tampa in 97. The year Sanders retired, they made the playoffs and Morton/Moore combined for 98 yards and the offense didn't score a touchdown until garbage time. He definitely made the right choice.

I still can't believe they dealt him to the Pats of all teams. He wrecked shop for a year for them before hitting a wall because all those carries finally showed all at once. But for a year, they were completely unfair.
