I don't know if this should be on the WWE board, but I could be talking in general. Reddit, Facebook groups, Twitter, anything where people want their voices heard, people be often talking about how they miss the Attitude Era, miss ECW, etc. and how "PG ruined wrestling." I know things are a little edgier in AEW, but not like how it was in the 1990s, nor are they trying to be Attitude reborn. The thing about this is that you have people talking about how things were better when it was TV-14 and stuff. Not to mention that fans online complained about the crash pad under the ramp that Chris Jericho fell on. The man is 50 and can't take major bumps like he used to. I also must note that sometimes it can be hard to watch deathmatch wrestling or even some other hardcore matches. So do people really long for the days of blood and violence? It's bad enough that some bumps can cause careers to end sooner than one would plan. My take on the Jericho fall was it was completely obvious it was a crash pad. That doesn't mean I wanted to see Jericho crash onto a hard surface. If it's a bump that needs an obvious pad to be done safely, don't do that bump. I mean they could have done the spot WITH a crashpad... but like... hid it better. Shot it in a way that you don't see the crash pad... it's not the first time a crashpad's been used in wrestling... they just USUALLY are hidden so you don't notice them.

He coulda crashed through the stage (it would be gimmicked) and onto a crash pad below. That woulda worked and not really been any more dangerous, depending on the gimmicking of the stage.

It's not the lack of blood or violence, as you can find that anywhere these days. It's the "emotional detachment".
Attitude Era/ECW leads me to believe this is when a lot of these folks-with this line of thinking-became fans. It was new, it was exciting. And, to them, this is how wrestling was: can't miss a week, so companies had to raise the bar to keep these new fans watching their program. ECW had "real" music, they would showcase on TV the hot angles. And even if it was just two guys like Axl Rotten and JT Smith having a run-of-the-mill cool down, someone like the Sandman would interfere and beat the crap out of both of them, just because. Attitude and Nitro would hit-and-run with backstage assaults, worked-shoots, blink and you miss it characters and angles that changed and evolved constantly. To them, wrestling was a chaotic roller coaster. And they "felt it" each and every week. They loved it.
But, as was stated earlier, they checked out. And decided to watch some of today's stuff. And they were bored. (For all I know, as easy as it is to cherry pick why they loved it back then, it's also easy to pick apart why today's stuff doesn't resonate with them. It's usually the same things: these guys all look the same, they only wrestle one way, nothing feels special anymore because it isn't how they remember it.)
Wrestling has evolved in many forms: some good and some bad. But at it's core, it's about what's at stake. Why are these two guys wrestling each other? Money? (Oh wait, they don't mention money anymore.) Pride? A title? Some issue in the past? Wrestler on the way up (like a Ryback or War Raiders squashing jobbers)? Or on the way down (guy "on the schnide")? It's not difficult if your announcers are doing their job correctly.
Or, just do what I do. When all else fails, make up a story. Hell, AEW is doing what I've thought for years with Dark and Elevation: two guys are wrestling to improve their chances of getting onto Dynamite. (Hey, I always thought those "long, boring" Prime Time matches between Lanny Poffo & Iron Mike Sharpe was for a chance to get on Superstars. They didn't have no meaning to me. I stick to that today.)
ECW had it right in the end: "ECW Wrestling, it's not for everybody!"

We've been having this conversation for 15 years.
The lack of naked women, constant swearing, and unprotected chair shots is not the problem.
The fact that the shows have been as badly written as 2000 WCW for a dozen years is the problem.

As pretty much everything else in wrestling, it's a tool which usefulness depends on the creative. It can enhance a match greatly and give an identity to it, or can be used to mask the lack of creativity by employing shock tactics.
My only problem, I think, with the PG era was actually accidental bleeding. Just imagine:
1) Wrestler promises opponent that will absolutely murder/demolish/put out of comission/make him retire on their next match. 2) Opponent receives a minor and barely noticeable cut. 3) Officials pause the match and the doctor comes in to treat the opponent's injury. 4) Wrestler leans against the apron and politely wait for them to stop the bleeding so he can continue absolutely murdering the opponent. (at least if he would shit talk or mock the procedure, but no)
We do understand it, but it really takes us out of the match.

I felt the same way when I saw the arm come out from under the ring with a broken table piece at hell in a cell. I’m not upset that they did a safe bump, I’m pointing and laughing because they filmed it terribly. If a magician does a shitty job of hiding his tricks he’s a shitty magician.

Blood and violence works in moderation. You can't have every match on the card be a blood bath. You can't have every match involve weapons. You need to reserve that for major feuds that need to be escalated or ended.
What wrestling doesn't need is to go back the Attitude era. We don't need the violence, the over sexualization of women, and the crash booking.

I miss blood.
I would even be happy with fake blood. Matches like HIAC, Elimination Chamber etc need it.

I miss blood. I would even be happy with fake blood. Matches like HIAC, Elimination Chamber etc need it. I wouldn't say those matches need blood (the Usos vs. New Day, Becky vs. Sasha and Orton vs. Jeff are just a few examples of Cell matches that were brutal and didn't have blood), but there's still a place for it IMO. Some wrestling moments just wouldn't be as iconic without it. Like others have said, just don't make it a weekly thing.
