Yep, 30 years ago today the original Sonic the Hedgehog was released to the Sega Genesis/Megadrive. I'm planning to do a playthrough of Mania today, and figured this could be a good general thread for thoughts on the anniversary and Sonic memories over the past three decades whether its the games, comics, shows, toys, or movies.

Sonic was 15 years old back in 1991. He'd be 45 now.

The only proper way to celebrate his 30th is to see Sonic impersonating William Shatner at the top of his lungs. Aaaaaand there it is.

I was a junior in high school. Had owned a Sega Genesis since the day it came out in the States. Got off work and hauled ass to Cowboys electronics to grab a copy of Sonic. Stayed up all night playing it. Then the next day called the school, pretending to be my father, telling them I was sick and wouldn't be at school that day.

I'm just amazed at the amount of pervasive pop culture that debuted 30 or so years ago - The Undertaker - Back to the Future - Indiana Jones - Sonic - Karate Kid - Mortal Kombat - and the list goes on Sorry kids, the 80s/90s were indeed the best times to grow up!

Did anyone read the 30th anniversary comic book?
Ian Flynn should just do harmless, adorable angst-free game-accurate one-shots all the time.

Nah, I love when Sonic writers add drama and their own unique ideas. He can be too action-focused, but I enjoy how many different takes on the lore there are.

It's just sometimes they can turn the screw a little too tightly with those and never know when to loosen them (incessant Sonic/Sally angst, bleak depressathons like the Metal Virus)

As were a lot of other things his fault.

As were a lot of other things his fault. Ben Hurst (the head SatAM writer) scripted the definitive Sonic/Sally chemistry, IMO. They teased each other while also being a good battle/romantic couple.

Always more of a Sega than Nintendo guy growing up... Spent many hours playing Sonic on the Mega Drive (Genesis).
I remember getting up early every Sunday Morning to watch AOSTH and collected British Comics.. Good times.
Even now I still enjoy the Sonic Boom Cartoon series and really liked Sonic Mania.
The franchise has definitely hit a few bumps throughout it's 30 years but as a whole it's one I look back on fondly.

In all honesty, Sonic was my first true favorite game series growing up. I had a NES, but I was born in '85 and thus didn't really master most of its games, plus my library was pretty small compared to what some of my friends and relatives had so I missed out on owning some of the best titles (Zelda, Mario 3, Castlevania, Mega Man, etc.)
But then I got a Genesis, Sonic 1 was included, and I was instantly head over heels for it, with Sonic 2 feeling like a natural evolution that took everything up a notch. Learning of the existence of Super Sonic was a mindblower for 7-8 year old me.
And TV wise? Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was on at 7am where I lived, so I'd wake up, put on WPIX 11, and there it'd be, right after Beast Wars (or Conan the Adventurer, depending on the year) and right before Garfield and Friends. 7am was early enough that I could watch it in bed before having to get up and get ready for school.
But Sonic SatAM was it for me, man; I had favorite shows as a very little kid, like Zoobilee Zoo, Denver the Last Dinosaur, Ren and Stimpy, and especially Pee Wee's Playhouse, but SatAM was the first show that felt like it was my own personal favorite, a show I found and watched on my own on Saturday mornings and was drawn deeper into because I actually felt invested in the story and the characters, rather than just the colors, imagery, or physical humor. It was the first show where I ever genuinely feared that the good guys might not win, or worse, some of them might have something really bad happen to them, since roboticization was a really effective substitute for death on a kids' show that still managed to retain a ton of horror. Obviously looking back it's a bit over the top to view it that way, but again I was about 8 years old, so I wasn't used to that feeling yet. It was funny how my initial feeling was "this isn't enough like the games!", but that feeling vanished really quickly, and to this day "Evil Conquering Overlord Robotnik (w/Jim Cummings' voice)" is still my default preference for the character.
I still remember feeling strange when it seemed like Robotnik had been killed off, and being genuinely upset when I realized no third season was coming, which meant no expansion on Tails' role, no Knuckles introduction, no explanation to the cliffhanger, none of it. Thankfully I found the Archie series about a year later when I saw the Sonic and Knuckles adaptation in a mall in Beach Haven, NJ, but looking back it still sucks that the official continuation never came, and Ben Hurst, the main guy who wanted to bring it back, ended up passing away too young. Glad that fans are doing the work now, though, been meaning to chip in a few bucks to their Patreon/Kickstarter/whichever it is.
