Shawn Dean won his first ever match tonight on Dark. After over a year of trying and improving earning a contract in doing so, he finally got his first win using a nifty submission hold to do it

Journeys like this consistently make the Youtube shows feel rewarding to watch. I know this sort thing will just never be interesting to some people, but seeing people come in, put in the work, and consistently prove themselves with every opportunity, until the day they finally get their win and they can move up to that next level, is really something special. It's got parallels to the Young Lions in New Japan, but also just in general to the independent scene for a lot of promotions that have schools attached. I've seen this play out a similar way before plenty of times on that scale.

Why this guy hasn't become a regular on Dynamite mystifies me. He'd do well.

Can we appreciate how awesome The Margarita is as a finishing Submission? There is definitely an awesome Lucha presence in AEW that allows wrestlers to find new and awesome looking moves to their game.
I think Dean has a high ceiling. Easy to get behind and a good wrestler too.

It's about time, he's worked hard and earned it. It's been great watching his journey and it's made his first win feel more important. Now let's have that first Baron Black win.

He was working a real world job until a few months back, he got released there, got signed by AEW, got injured and has been working a backstage role.

Speaking of backstage roles I'm convinced some of the Dark regulars like Ryzin are signed to backstage and producer roles ad well

I knew about him getting laid off and being signed by AEW around the same time, didn't know about him being hurt, but that does make sense.

One of the things I feel has harmed wrestling since the death of the territories is basically everyone running promotions learning from scratch as they go. If AEW are training guys for backstage work, even if they leave, the wrestling landscape has a stream of people with experience who can help elsewhere in the industry.

I know they offered Sug D a backstage role and he declined. Not to say the wrestlers used aren't all talented but you cannot sign everybody to a contract but if they have a creative mind and can help coach the students or be agents/producers/creative? All the better

He seems already way more polished than most who start off with the Young Lion booking. Can’t wait to see more of him.

When he first started appearing on Dark, I tweeted Tony Khan a few times about how Dean needs to be signed. That feels like a million years ago. When he won, he had this look on his face, and I had feelings. Like "I am so happy for this guy." It's insane how just one person's journey, through their social media, vlogs, and appearing on a youtube show can fill me with real feelings of joy and pride. I hope he leans into the Captain America thing a bit, but I'm sure he can't. Either way, happy to see his first victory.

Unlike say Lee Johnson or Griff Garrison who are literal fetuses, The Captain is 28 and has been cutting his teeth on the Indies for awhile before he got the AEW chance So the rock was already cut and they polished it. He's been such a good story to get behind too if you ever see his Elevation video.

Is this the guy who did the interview with Show about how he wants to show other veterans that they're not completely worthless when they leave the service?
Because... we need more of that
