Leaving Dynamite last night all I can think about is what the AEW World Championship match will be at All Out. Mostly because I will be in attendance. My brother and I bought tickets to fly in thinking we would be seeing the coronation of the Hangman as AEW Champion. But last night threw that for a loop. So who do you THINK it will be facing Omega in Chicago for the belt?
-Hangman Page: Though he ate the pin last night, Omega had to use one of his belts to cheat and win. This does seem like the perfect long term story that will peak at the perfect time for this PPV. Recent signings may have thrown a wrench into those plans however which leads us to...
-CM Punk: Punk is all but a lock to make his debut at Rampage First Dance. He will probably getting a win over Darby Allin to immediately shoot him into title consideration. In my opinion this will be the match for the PPV. Punk and Omega will assuredly pop their biggest PPV number of all time. It makes sense. And while it’s not the match I was hoping for, I can’t say I would be disappointed.
-Christian: He was put over hard as being the #3 contender, presumably #1 or #2 after Hangman falls off. They have teased the match dating all the way back to the Dynamite after Revolution. It seems underwhelming but it could be an acceptable world title match alongside a stacked card.
-Bryan Danielson: The other rumored big name to be coming to AEW. Seems like a done deal. Though not as much of a lock as Punk. Could Danielson debut on the PPV to get a monster number of buys? It’s possible, though seems more likely to be down the road at some point.
-Other: While I cannot point to anyone else who would make much sense, AEW has so much talent on their roster. Maybe I’m missing someone? If so please comment on who you think it would be.

Maybe Punk, but I'm not sure. They could still pull the trigger on Page.

If you don't think Page is challenging at All Out, you're insane. If I'm wrong I will change my username to "clueless moron" until he actually wins the title.

I’m excited for Punk in AEW, but having him face Omega at All Out would make AEW look like WWE with Summerslam. They’d be pushing aside/delaying Page for the new big star. And what finish do you even do? Either Punk loses in Chicago or he is the one to dethrone Omega instead of Page.
Anything other than Omega/Page would hurt my interest in the show. It’s the match that’s clearly been building to a peak. Delaying would just feel like dragging it out, and would feel like not giving the title to Luger at Summerslam 93. You’re delaying it for a bigger reaction when the time is already correct.

CM Punk's almost certainly slotted in for a match with Darby Allin at All Out. Darby has nothing else to do for the show, he's a big ratings draw himself, and if you want to start positioning Punk as a heel or a tweener (Which is where he's going to shine) having him take on another face in his first match will get you slowly started down that road.

Even if Hangman faces Omega I'm no longer 100% sure (as I previously was) that the title changes hands now.

I agree with what everyone is saying here about it being the perfect time to capitalize on Hangman. I also concur that it would hurt the Hangman badly if he doesn’t win the belt at the PPV. They’ve booked themselves into a corner though. Hangman has to relinquish his title match and #1 contender position because he lost. AEW does not like going back on stipulations so how do we get to where the Hangman is in the match? I want to be wrong, maybe I’m crazy, but I think Punk is the match. It won’t be his first match back in Chicago so having him lose wouldn’t be that terrible, especially because the PPV attendance will be more of a fly in crowd than a local one.

So my issue with Punk is this;
How do you justify it with the ranking system? If he's debuting on August 20th and the PPV is two weeks later, how do you get him to the amount of wins needed to top?
And if you have it be an eliminator, you'd have to do Omega/Punk on TV before the PPV which doesn't make sense.

At the end of the day, I would argue Punk or Byran don't need the title but does the title need them? Either competing for the title or holding it (if briefly) would grab headlines giving the title a massive prestige boost which would immensely help the company gain attention from casual fans and non-fans alike.

AEW is not going to kneecap their top face for a rusty CM Punk when Omega's entire reign has been building to losing to Page. Unless he now moves like 2010 Bret Hart I expect Punk to be the world champion before the end of the year - but as a heel. When you look at the whole range of options AEW has, CM Punk versus Page is clearly the top choice from a narrative perspective. Page as a character has employed a variety of coping mechanisms to deal with splitting from The Elite, Punk's heel gimmick is essentially perfectly positioned to go up against all of them. They would have to be blind not to run it. Omega is banged up anyway, and I don't think very many people would rather watch him vs Punk than him vs Danielson.

Yeah I think Punk will debut at the First Dance, not wrestle at it. I think he’ll beat Darby at All Out and then he can challenge Page for the title at the next PPV , and Omega can move on to Bryan.

It doesn't matter if it has been seven years. I have no doubt in my mind once Punk returns to a wrestling ring the pops (yes, not the first pop but for several months) he'll receive will be insane. The guy remains over like Grover or Hogan in the 80s and Austin in the 90s.

Dude has lost a lot of his cult-esque hold on people, but the minute he lays a savage burn on someone (especially if they either can't refute it or are told not to refute it), he's going to get most of it back. I ultimately don't want to think Tony's going to take the focus away from Page, but with the type of reactions Punk is going to get, I'm sure he'll be tempted.

Punk is obviously going to come in with a ton of leverage, but he's not 1994 Hulk Hogan. I don't think TK would have played ball with him if he felt like he wasn't going to play ball, too. Obviously, he's going to be a main eventer, and obviously he's going to win the championship in relatively short order, but nothing in the way that AEW has been booked or run as a company in its short existence suggests to me that it will allow him to just come in and steamroll the main storyline that has been building for over a year.
Hangman is going to win the title at All Out. Punk is going to face Darby. I will be mystified if anything else happens.

It’ll be Page for sure. I just have no idea how they get there in a way that is narratively as satisfying as his friends in Dark Order willing themselves to victory.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they pushed off omega / Page another ppv or two.
CM Punk debuts in Chicago on August 20th and then faces Omega in Chicago at All Out. Makes to much sense.
