Omega/Punk would be a mistake too. Then you’re just like WWE, the big star parachuting in over all your regulars. And then what is the finish? Page should be the guy to dethrone Omega, not Punk.
Anything but Omega/Page would be a mistake. This booking is taking me out of the most exciting time in the company, because it feels like a total swing and miss. I don’t want to start distrusting their booking.

I'm disappointed that this is going in the direction of having to revolt against the current plan in order to get Hangman the title match at All Out like what happened with Daniel Bryan in 2014. I don’t see a revolt just yet, unless the match is announced. If the revolt is happening, I do trust AEW wouldn’t ignore it and pivot to that direction. AEW is generally really good at listening to the fans. What I can imagine is them announcing Omega vs Christian. The fans boo this. Omega is in the ring soaking up the hate, heck, I can imagine if Christian is in the ring and the fans booing him as well. The fans screaming out for Hangman. Then Page comes out, makes a challenge to Christian for a number one contenders match. Page beats Christian. Christian turns heel, then you’d have you’re first challenger for Hangman. That’s just fantasy booking, but I’d go for that. |

If they don't go with Hangman at All Out, I think that would be a huge mistake.
There's still a lot you can do with an Omega title run, no doubt, but take too long to pull the trigger on Hangman and the crowd might lose interest. Timing and heat is everything in wrestling and both of those say it should be All Out.
Get the belt onto Hangman at All Out and then you can run the Kenny vs. Bryan/Punk dream matches that don't need a title because they'll be hot enough already.

I still suspect the journos are being worked. There's no natural alternative to Page - Christian as he is now would be literally laughable, neither Punk nor Bryan are going to lose their first match and neither are going to win the world title in their debut either (And it makes no sense to use either in a world title slot when they can add depth to the rest of the card) Even if they're not planning to go with Page, I reckon they'll end up doing it for the same reasons WWE ended up doing Bryan at WM30, and unlike that instance Page is the legitimate company favourite.
I can see a world where this is the logical midpoint to an arc that concludes at Full Gear - the clean loss, the screwjob, the clean win - I'm just not sure it's going to play out like that. It's an interesting reversal from two years ago where they put Page in the ME against the wishes of the audience.

Also a wrestling companies job is to play with fan’s emotions. It very well could be that they know fans expected this match and giving fans legit doubt this match will happen. Even telling Meltzer. I think playing with fans emotions is perfectly fine as long as you give them what they want in the end. This whole anxiety filled month could be seen as something we laugh about. Or maybe I’m coping. It’s probably the coping. Lol |

This almost feels like a deliberate invoking of the Daniel Bryan/Becky Lynch metanarrative. Also, one thing I forgot to consider. Isn’t Hangman due to be a father soon? I think I read somewhere that his wife was expecting a child. IF that’s the real reason for holding something off, then that would be a reasonable excuse. But I’m not sure.

AEW has hooked me with plain storytelling that is actually based on what's happening on screen, and dabbling in this kind of meta story twisting is a blow to the things I fundamentally enjoy about the promotion. And if this is legit, and not some excessive attempt to work the dirtsheets, then like, actually what the hell. I don't want this title reign dragged out for another two months when the guy to end it is right there. I would actively enjoy Omega vs. Christian, Danielson, and Punk less if they were title matches. |
