I now kind of want to see Chris Pratt in old man makeup doing his best Captain Lou impression as "Old Mario" in live-action bookends to the movie, before we transition to the 3D animation... And then have him Do the Mario over the end credits.

I don't think that was ever Nintendo official, just used in the old cartoons and the live action movie. Especially in a post-Yoshi's Island world given the story of that game. Yeah I think Mario never talked in a game until SM64. Unless you count...THE CD-I GAME. Not quite, there was this before 64: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario's_Game_Gallery Though fully officially Nintendo, 64 was it.

I figured just from Jack Black's inclusion that {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}It was going to be partially a musical If Bowser has a villain song, I'm for it. Well if the plot of the movie involves Bowser hating reading, then Nintendo already have a song for him in the bag from that weird album they released to promote reading....or something?

Cynical thought: maybe they saw how well Sonic 2 did with an April release and want to see if Mario can replicate that success in theaters?

Useless trivia; that US release date will be the 40th anniversary (almost to the date) of the original arcade release of Mario Bros (at least according to the US Copyright Office Records anyway).

I believe Spring 2023 is also the target opening date for Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Orlando (?)
So it makes sense to have the movie come out in America at the same time as their version of the theme park attraction.

I guess this also means that The Asylum mockbuster Great Giana Sisters will be made before the Mario movie comes out

I watched a video by Sassfras Productions where he rated the Illumination Films from best to worst and it's f***ing grim stuff. They have one of the worst track records I've ever seen from a major studio.

I know this sounds strange to say, but of all the Nintendo video game franchises, Mario has always felt like the most uninteresting in regards to the source material.
What I mean by that is the story is just plain silly, . Moreso than every other damsel in distress video game that also came about around the same time. Most of the time, they haven't really expanded on it, just redoing the same tactic of "Bowser kidnapping the Princess..BUT THIS TIME he _____". I am guessing that the story is going to rely heavily on the audience being familiar with the lore and not so much about what we know about Mario and friends. I think it'll probably be similar to how The Lego Movie felt.
I don't doubt the movie will make tons and tons of money...but I think I would have preferred anything else out of Nintendo as far as a video game movie goes; Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing, Punch Out, Pilotwings, Star Tropics...heck I think a Dr. Mario movie would be far more interesting.

One of the major issues is that any time the setting/story gets explored in interesting fashion Nintendo never follows up with it or in some cases chooses to actively avoid anything resembling it. The Nintendo Power Mario comics were fun but never became a series outside the magazine, the various Mario role playing games did some fascinating stuff with the characters only to lean into genericisms with Sticker Star, and even the wacky fun from the Mario Manga has been mitigated by it never being translated into English. Its remarkable how much they insist on sanding down any interesting edge the franchise might have at so many points.
