I don't think what she said was really off base once I read the full quotes. I saw candyman in the theaters and there definitely is something valuable to the community experience of the movie theater. As an example, endgame wouldn't have been as š„š„š„š„ as it was if we watched at home and not in a shared community of fans reacting to everything together

Anyone else get the impression the theater these rich filmakers experience is different from the experience most of us have to deal with?

I have absolutely no problem with movies being released digitally and theatrically at the same time. That tweet from Alex Winter that was shared a few posts ago is right on the nose; not everybody is comfortable going to the theater right now, and filmmakers trying to make it an "us vs. them" thing is just silly.
For me, though, I'd be more inclined to watch new movies on-demand if they brought the prices down a bit. I usually go to the movies by myself, and the theater I normally go to charges $10 at most for a ticket. So for me, paying $30 for a movie I'd only get to watch once doesn't really sit well with me. I'd pay that much for a copy of the movie on DVD or if it got added to a digital account like Vudu and I could watch it over and over however many times I wanted in perpetuity.

Or they weren't in the theater with me on opening night of the It remake, where some dude in the front of the auditorium stood up four times during the movie and asked as loudly as possible if anybody knew the password for the theater's WiFi, and the girls two rows in front of me who kept chatting amongst themselves and checking their Instagrams every ten minutes.

Fixed. And it expresses the thing I fear about this, maybe I fear it more than the pandemic itself. I get it. I like theater experience too. Been to 2-3 films this year, even. Minding myself and following rules, of course.

Given the choice between seeing a movie in theaters and streaming it at home at the same time, the only scenario I can see choosing the theater is if the alternative would run me a ridiculous sum of money like what Disney's been doing (since the theater closest to me is pretty cheap). The only movies HBO's put up I've actually watched are Wonder Woman, Mortal Kombat, and The Suicide Squad but it never even crossed my mind that I might rather be watching them in the theater.

I'm noticing this complaint lately from directors about streaming services. I like the occasional big screen too, but otherwise? Streaming is quicker, I'm still anxious about Covid, and my living room is cosier than a poorly air-conditioned room full of annoying teens. Let me live my life, rich person. This, and if I really want that big screen, I can always borrow the projector from the board room.

on a semi related note shouldnāt this thread be titled āPatty Jenkins criticsizes streaming servicesā because from that quote it seems like she wants movies to be in theaters not streaming services
Edit: the headline of the article even says she criticized streaming services

American cinema going with all the whooping and cheering and clapping is totally alien to almost everywhere else, where you watch the movie in complete silence aside from the odd laugh if it's a comedy.
I can see what she thinks and what she means, and there is definitely a need to save and preserve the experience of cinema, but trying to remotely blame the shift in consumption of movies for why her own awful sequel underperformed is just ego.
So yeah, agree with her overarching point, but disagree with the specifics of her experience.

I don't have anything of worth to contribute to this thread other than my brain is convinced Patty Jenkins and Patti Mayonnaise are one in the same and it's making me confused.

I mean, I probably liked WW84 more than most but being in the theaters wouldn't have fixed or addressed the issues people had with it. That said, I do wish it had a chance for a proper release in the first place, but unfortunately that is the reality we live it currently. A lot of films are going to be short changed by current events. A lot of people still don't feel comfortable about going out right now, rightfully so. I came from Shang-Chi today (which was badass), but me and my girlfriend went really early and to a theater we knew wouldn't be packed.

Iāve never had anything like that happen and Iāve been going about once a week for years. I didnāt think that kind of stuff was real. Maybe Michiganders are just more respectful in theaters? I donāt know.

I used to work in a cinema full time for a year and part time for the last 4 months. The things I've had to deal with.
My second day on the job, there was a message over the radio (floor staff were given walkie talkies to communicate with each other and management)
"We've a weirdo in screen 1".
What happened was it was 4pm showing of black hawke down and this couple sat down in an empty screen to watch the flick. This odd ball comes in, and in an empty screen sits two seats away from the woman.
During the film she glances to her right and sees the said odd ball staring at her with a big smile on his face and his hands down his trousers. They very quickly left.

I'm well past ready for the movie theater industry to become a niche product. It's where it's been trending toward for years and at this point it's just a pain in the ass to have to leave the house and pay for overpriced snacks to go see stuff. Only been to the movie theater twice in the past three years and one of those was due to my Internet being out for three days while the other was because my best friend was in town so extenuating circumstances on both occasions.

I like movie theaters well enough, but if I had to choose, I'd rather stay at home, yeah. I wanted to see Spoiler Alert recently, and planned on seeing it in theaters, but it didn't come to my town's theater so I waited for it to hit streaming and then watched it. Just as well, I ended up crying through most of it which would've sucked at a theater, heh.
