so... sitting on your a$$ in a theater is better than sitting on your a$$ at home? Oh yeah... he gets more money from us sitting on our a$$ in the theater. I know my $20 doesn't mean squat... but his pompous attitude makes it easier to skip Avatar 2 in the theater.

There is something to be said for the in-theater experience, but it really only works for tentpole big-budget blockbusters and horror movies.
For blockbusters, the reasons are obvious: these are movies that were made to be seen on the biggest screen possible with the best sound imaginable, to take in the full experience of the film. For horror, it's about being in a room with about 100 other people for two hours and sharing the collective experience of being scared out of your wits, hearing your fellow moviegoers shriek, scream, and jump out of their seats.
But other than that, the streaming age has really made the in-cinema experience somewhat unnecessary, and a little bit beneficial for the average viewer. From a personal perspective, there are so many mid-level dramas and comedies that I've watched on Netflix or HBOMax or Hulu when I've had two hours to kill that I never would have even considered watching if the only option was to go see it in a theater. So it's helped expose a new audience to movies they never would have otherwise seen.

I think James and Patty had two completely different takes that don't really intersect.
James' point was that people miss seeing movies in the theater and the theatrical experience as an option. He said *he's* tired of sitting on *his* ass. He's coming from the perspective of a fan of movies first and a director second.
Patty said unless a movie plays in a movie theater, it's "not a real movie." f***ing ridiculous, among the most dogshit takes ever publicly said by someone in the arts industry.
James is celebrating the movie-going experience. Patty is tearing down filmmakers by using theaters as some sort of gatekeeping status symbol metric.
