I think it's safe to say we've finally gotten there
I'm glad Swerve was the first, especially when he declared he'd be the first. Planted the seed, and paid it off, really good shit

Swerve is champ but I am hoping he isn't the only champ or put into this spot for next years

Granted, Okada is probably a "when", not "if", so that's also a good thing for the main event scene racial makeup, too, but this is the sort of thing where you never want to rest on your laurels.

I said on one of the first pages that we'd have our first black AEW World Champion in 2023 so I'm off by a year but hey, at least it happened. Now it's just a matter of how this run will be, how long it'll take and who's next up. We need for it to be a place to where we can see others and say "you know, they might be next" rather than it just being a one off. Hobbs is 33 so maybe his time will be here in a few years. New Day's contracts are up this year I think? If they joined they'd help shake things up so we'll see.
Either way it was a momentous accomplishment and we're on the way.
Swerve!!!

who are we thinking he faces first for the title? Father of the Year Christian Cage. He needs something different from Copeland, and I'd say he has earned a main event run against World champ Swerve, and seems like a nice month long program until Hangman comes back and they can have their blowoff in like a dog collar match or something.

There's also a pretty brutal history with Nick Wayne already built in

I would greatly veto that idea, considering the horrible racial stereotype of blackmen not having father figures. This feels like a big can of Nope.

who are we thinking he faces first for the title? Man, that's a good question. Who's gonna be his AJ Styles (or historically who's gonna be his Kane)?

I kind of figure after Christian's match where he got kicked in the dick like a billion times that maybe they can tone down the Father thing with Christian for now, anyway. That kind of reached its logical conclusion.

Wondering how people would feel if Christian did try to go that route in a segment, Swerve just laughs and he and his dad just teamed up on him.

Yep, Swerve winning the title is a big step in the right direction, but there's more work to be done. He needs a respectable title reign, for starters. They also need to build up other diverse talents for the main event scene. I saw Okada mentioned and he'd be a good choice, too. If Fenix is still out for the foreseeable future, start building up Penta, for real. Komander seems like another future main eventer. Takeshita and Hobbs can certainly be rehabbed from the Jericho Vortex and built up to the main event. If Bandido, RUSH and Keith Lee can all get healthy, I'd focus on pushing them. Hell, I said it last night, but push Bowens as a singles guy. They have so many talented wrestlers of all ethnicities and backgrounds, Tony just needs to give them the chance to shine.

I think Christian would be a fun choice. There was a point where Swerve and Christian were the two most evil bastards in wrestling so it would be a good test of Swerve’s face character as well. The father stuff can be avoided quite easily - you could just make it about Swerve’s attack on Nick Wayne. Christian sells it as he’s avenging his “son” but really he’s just using the past issue between Swerve and Wayne to manipulate himself into a title shot.
Christian will give Swerve a high profile and hot first angle and Christian can easily take the loss.

Good on Swerve for winning the big one, never saw his pre-WWE stuff but I was shocked when they released him. He’s always looked like a star whenever I watched him.

As long as he doesn't end up like two out of three members of New Day. Don't Lesnar him.
