Pretty much as the thread states. Reinventing one's self is a common theme in professional wrestling when their previous character becomes stale or needs a shake up. Sometimes it does wonders(such as Rocky Maivia transforming into The Rock) while other times it gets over like a fart in church(such as Kung Fu Billy Graham). However there are times when the change is so drastic, you wouldn't think their the same person.
What are some examples you can come up with....
For me, it would be Scott Steiner. I didn't watch alot of WCW, but I knew who he was. Tired of being a "tag team" guy, he turned on his brother and long time tag team partner Rick is join the nWo and develop a new attitude that we haven't seen from the future Big Poppa Bump.
Not only did he go from a boring nice guy to a douchebag heel, but he also cut off his signature mullet, grew a goatee, dyed both of them white, and put on a noticeable amount of muscle mass. With sunglasses and a chain mill hat to complete the ensemble.
He also changed his mannerisms from mild manner to a roided up, short-tempered, womanizer who dubbed himself as "freakzilla." This pretty his signature look/persona that fans came to know him as. It also resulted in singles success winning the United States and TV championships before winning the big one in late 2000, right before WCW's closure months later.
I can't say there's been any transformation greater than that.
Another person I didn't recognize after they changed their look was from Headshrinker Fatu to Rikishi. I know he was The Sultan between those characters, but he wore a mask so of course he wouldn't be recognizable, so I don't think it's fair to count that. In fact, when I first saw the hefty Samoan(as Rikishi), I thought he was Yokozuna who dyed his hair blonde. I didn't know he was formerly a Headshrinker and then "Make a Difference" Fatu until my brother told me, who had more access to pro wrestling insider sites in those days. I only went by what I saw off of TV.
Any characters you can think of in your watching history?
