I’ve heard a lot of wrestlers say wins and losses don’t matter. On the flip side some wrestlers have been political to the point where it’s obvious they really think they matter.
Wins and losses may not be everything, but the wrong loss can derail a storyline, wrestler’s career, even a company.
The one that still sticks out to me is Nash beating Goldberg at Starrcade. Goldberg’s streak had to end at some point and I don’t know when it should have ended. But that really seemed like a bad place to do it. The streak gimmick still had a lot of juice left. I think Bobby Heenan even said about it, “That killed us.”
Also, when a wrestler technically wins but fails to win the title can be just as bad. Lex Luger at the 1993 SummerSlam really sticks out. The fans probably would’ve went with Bret Hart anyway, but I imagine him failing to get the title there pushed a lot of the casuals over to Hart.
Similar to Lex at SummerSlam, Chris Jericho failing to get the WWE title from Randy Orton at Armageddon 2007. That really helped take the wind out of his sails for me. He didn’t really rebound for me until he became SRS Jericho.

Booker T losing at WrestleMania 19. Not just the storyline, but the finish where HHH hit the Pedigree and fall away, then 90 seconds later got one hand over Booker for the pin.

Randy Orton losing to Triple H at Unforgiven 2004 has to rank up there. Completely killed all the momentum he had going right in its tracks. Ruined his whole run up until the point he turned heel again and began feuding with the Undertaker.

Punk losing to HHH at Night of Champions 2011 was a large part of the resentment that arguably led us to him being in AEW

I'd say Luger too but I was also thinking about his music right around Wrestlemania. Jim Johnston missed the mark on that one, if he did it. That was way too generic for a guy who was supposed to be main event All American good guy. Luckily when it was mashed up with Bulldogs it was pretty awesome but by that time Lex was way down the card.

Bayley losing to Alexa Bliss after refusing to use a kendo stick to get revenge on her.
Then that interview on Raw where Bayley basically said "I don't want to hurt people".
It took a long time for people to be interested in her again until just last year during her empty arena Smackdown heel run.

Sting's lost to Hogan at Starrcade started WCW's downward fall.

Would Renegade right after he lost the TV title count? I mean, it's not like people wanted to see an Ultimate Warrior knock-off, but they didn't have to completely bury the guy afterwards, it's not like he was the one to come up with the idea. Just give him more training, have him denounce the gimmick and be his own man, and get revenge on Jimmy Hart and The Dungeon of Doom for humiliating him like they did.
Instead, he came back months later but as a lower card guy who was lucky to even be on Nitro(he mostly wrestled on B show Saturday Night) where he got jobbed out for the remainder of his run before getting released in December 1998. He then committed suicide two months later. If all that wasn't a burial, I don't know what it.
Another, and less severe one would be Tatanka losing his streak to Ludvig Borga and then was sidelined with a storyline injured. Not completely the company's fault since Ludvig Borga got injured before Tatanka could get revenge on him(which was a waste of a push, though hindsight is 20/20), but when he came back, he was spinning his wheels and then feuded with Lex Luger over the idea of him selling out to Ted Dibiase only to sell out himself, and then become another Million Dollar Corporate Goon and lost in the shuffle. Whatever overness or momentum he had headed into/after Summerslam 94 completely evaporated and wasn't the same since before his streak.

While it didn't do massive damage to him cause he was over as hell anyway, Jericho beating Triple H only to have the result overturned later on was a bad idea.
After they saw the reaction Jericho got they should have stuck with him as champion even if just for a short run

Crush losing to Doink at Wrestlemania IX. It wouldn't have been as bad if Crush ever got his win back and got revenge on him but he never really did. It killed his momentum and then they turned him heel which really didn't do anything for him in the long run. Really he didn't start to enjoy any kind of success until Kronik in WCW which was in 2000 and then WCW closed not long after so that ended up being short lived.
Lacey Evans failing to win the SD Women's title from Bayley at both Royal Rumble 2020 and Wrestlemania 36. It really seemed like it was her time and she would've been a good choice to give the brand a top face desperately needed. However they were so hell bent on on whole Bayley/Sasha storyline, which didn't need the title and hardly anyone cared about that point anyways as they had dragged it out so damn long, they didn't pull the trigger on Lacey when I think they should've. Instead they ended up having to turn her right back heel which I don't think was good for her. I know they gave her another big opportunity with the Charlotte and Ric Flair storyline as dumb as it was and she ended up getting pregnant but they honestly had already missed out on their chance with her the year before.
