Zack Ryder gets super over with his internet show----- only to be brutally squashed by Kane and goes back to a jobber and kicked in the balls at Wrestlemania

You could add Tazz to the HHH list of stars who could have done more if they hadn't lost to him pile I'm always open to HHH criticism but this one is really pushing it. He had limited involvement with HHH, was booked terribly throughout his time in WWF, and generally just wasn't very well suited to the wrestling style. IMO Triple H is in the clear with this one! I don't think it helped Tazz losing to HHH clean though, they could have just not had them face off at all honestly at that point.

Sting's lost to Hogan at Starrcade started WCW's downward fall. Sting losing to Hogan damaged the whole company. Sting never lost to Hogan. They did that botched Dusty finish which would've sucked even had they done it right, but not for a moment was it presented that Hogan beat Sting. And WCW was still huge in 1998. Sting not beating Hogan decisively enough had almost no affect on business. It may have adversely affected Sting's career, but WCW came out of that virtually unscathed. Stupid booking in 1998 and 1999 was far more damaging than Starrcade 1997. As for my answer, Lex Luger. And take your pick: 1. Dusty Finish at GAB '88 2. Losses to Flair in the rematch at Starrcade '88 basically clean 3. Two screwjob losses to Flair in 1990 so they could save the big win for Sting. 4. Countout win over Yokozuna at Summerslam '93 5. DQ loss to Yokozuna at Wrestlemania X 6. Losing to Hogan at Road Wild '97 just days after winning the Title in an all time moment on Nitro so they could save the conquering moment for Sting Any one of these could have solidified Luger as a bigger star. It's a massive credit to Luger that he always stayed reasonably over after all that. Luger is one of the most consistently poorly booked main event talents ever, and dude still got over no matter what ass gimmick they stuck on him.

Dusty Rhodes deciding & Jim Crockett as the owner not over ruling him when it was decided that on the first ppv they did w/o Vince running the same night that having Luger lose by blood stoppage to build up regional rematches rather then setting up a national babyface champion ended up sinking JCP and help lead to the sale to Turner. So I'd say that was pretty damaging.

"Dr. Death's loss to Bart Gunn killed his chances at being a main eventer in the WWF."Co-signed Jim Ross and Jim Cornette Speaking of, Bart's later loss to Butterbean. I wasn't watching at the time but I heard he actually got a little over winning that thing originally? This may already have been discussed but I am posting from my phone so didn't scroll through yet.

The match was short, yes, but he got Hunter in the Tazzmission which H escaped with a low blow, then Tommy Dreamer accidentally blasted Tazz with a chair.

So I'd say that was pretty damaging. TBF, WWF was doing PPVs where they didn't give away issues they were building between the big shows. Usually SummerSlam in particular was prone to this early on (ex. we didn't get Jake vs. Rude at the first edition) This was to continue selling said matches on house shows. Even WrestleMania did this from time to time (random JYD getting the I-C title shot, not Tito, for example). Different sides, same coin, more or less. And yes, a first impression by JCP should have had a feel good moment.

Booker T losing at WrestleMania 19. Not just the storyline, but the finish where HHH hit the Pedigree and fall away, then 90 seconds later got one hand over Booker for the pin. Booker T should have won that match, but he has twice as many HOF rings as Triple H. Didn't hurt him THAT much.

Booker did eventually recover from that loss, but it took the addition of Sharmell to get him motivated again, and a lot of the SD roster circa 05/06 getting taken out to get him a solid World Title run.
It wasn't so much that the loss wasn't devastating, as it was that the stars aligned a few years later with the booking to finally make up for it.

Talking of title matches that don't last very long, how do we feel about Diesel vs Bob Backlund? I feel this set the trend for this sort of match yet because Backlund was on the way back down it doesn't seem to be as much of an issue. No, that was dumb as hell. They had spent months getting Backlund over in a plotline people still remember to this day, and then completely killed all his credibility three days later in an untelevised match. He was never a serious threat to anyone after that. Dumb, dumb, dumb and didn't help get Nash over because people didn't have any chance to anticipate or cheer for his vanquishing the mad king. It also continued an irritating trend where people would be serious threats in feuds with Bret but not to anyone else on the main event level, which undermined Bret to an extent.

Flair losing to Hogan twice in '94. WCW did an amazing job building Flair back up to the champ we remember prior to his goofy WWF run, and then old skinny Hogan comes in and just runs over him in a pair of paint by numbers matches. Then they went on to ruin Vader the same way. I went back to watch the clip of hogan no selling the vader bomb. That guy...

Disregarding what a dick move it is, Hogan is always underrated for toughness. Imagine no selling someone as stiff as Vader.

Kofi dropping the title to Lesnar in a squash was such an amazingly terrible move. They take a feelgood "underdog makes good, reaches the top after years of struggle" story and shit it down the toilet to say that no, he was never in the same league as the real golden boys. They didn't just kill Kofi as a main eventer, they killed their own ability to convince fans to invest in their angles. What made it worse was a giant baked potato looking guy showed up moments after and the crowd was damn near silent. Cain had one match in Saudi Arabia that lasted 90 seconds and he wasn’t seen again in WWE.

One that I just watched… Edge and Matt Hardy have their first official match against each other at SummerSlam 2005 off the back of the whole Lita affair, everybody is psyched for these two to tear each other apart… Match goes like five minutes and ends in a referee stoppage because Matt is bleeding and concussed after hitting the ring post.
They’d go on to have way better matches in the feud, but it just took all the steam out of the thing and out of Matt individually. Once that feud was over, he was floundering for almost a full year until Jeff comes back and they’re teamed up again.
